A historian's book makes the case for gun control. Other scholars dispute his claim. -- On April 18 Columbia University will hand out its Bancroft Prize, an annual award presented for outstanding books in history and diplomacy. One of this year's recipients is Michael Bellesiles, for his book, "Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture." A growing number of respected scholars, from across the political spectrum, are saying that his research and conclusions are wrong. They've charged that the book is riddled with errors so enormous as to seriously undermine his work. |

"Empirical research has established that gun ownership by law-abiding people reduces crime. The connection is so reliable and well known that finally, leftist congressmen have chosen not to call for new gun laws even in the wake of recent school shootings. There are other good reasons to own guns that have not been a big part of recent public debate. I consider a few of them here." |

Rep. Meehan (D-MA) has introduced H.R.1247 "To provide for the implementation of a system of licensing for purchasers of handguns and for a record of sale system for handguns, and for other purposes."
"Record of sale" is double-talk for gun registration. "Other purposes" includes outlawing gun sales between private individuals, even father to son, as well as background checks for all transfers, even to just rent a gun at the range. Violations net 2 years in prison.

(Hmmm, is this the same government that wants all of your gun records in their computers?) |

Interesting results from a survey conducted on iWon.com: Although a small majority (55%) of the people responding do not own guns, and and even a smaller majority (39%) do not think private gun ownership deters crime, a wopping 79% of the respondants answered NO to the question "Do you think gun manufacturers should be subject to lawsuits for crimes committed with weapons they have manufactured?" |
