The best season in history just ended for the U.S. biathlon team, and now a couple of young guns from Eagle River have a chance to join the fun.
Grace Gilliland, 16, and Helen Wilson, 15, were among seven athletes four girls, three boys named to the national team's junior development team Thursday.
Also gaining a spot on the national team is 20-year-old Travis Cooper of Kenai, a member of the National Guard biathlon program in Vermont who was named to the five-person senior development team. |

The last thing New York City needs is to invite in people with guns. Yet thats just what the Republicans in Congress and President Trump would have us do.
The mechanism would be the extraordinarily dangerous Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which would take away states rights to determine who gets to walk around with a hidden firearm and who doesnt. It would allow anyone with a concealed carry permit from any state to use it in all states without fear of prosecution. |

In a deeply divided United States of America few issues are more polarizing than gun ownership.
Even talking about the issue becomes a minefield of hyperbole.
Gun rights advocates point out that the right of the people to keep and bear arms is a guaranteed liberty, enshrined within the U.S. Constitution, and which offers both personal protection against crime and a means to oppose government oppression and autocracy. They say that gun ownership is a cornerstone of freedom under constant assault by a nave and politically motivated left. |

Legislation recently introduced in the Navajo Tribal Council would require those residing in the nation to register their guns with tribal police.
The bill, 0114-17, would modify the Navajo Nation Code and create the Navajo Nation Firearm Act which, among other clauses, would mandate firearms to be logged in a central registry.
Delegate Davis Filfred, who sponsored the legislation, told the Daily Times he did so to have better gun control and accountability for firearms circulating on the nation. |

For decades the Avtomat Kalashnikova was viewed as the weapon of the enemya symbol of the Iron Curtain and Communism. When the Soviet Union collapsed and the former communist states began to warm to freedom, the door was opened for the import of previously unavailable firearms and ammunition.
During the last two decades, American shooters have warmed to the Kalashnikov design, particularly due to the fact that imported AKs were priced right. The strength of the American dollar allowed firearms-import companies to bring rifles in from former Communist-bloc nations and sell them for very reasonable prices here in the states. |

All five bills went through the process with no adverse amendments and were placed on the Calendar for a final vote for passage on Wednesday 4/5/2017. All five subsequently passed the House on Wednesday.

As talk radio host Darryl W. Perry of Free Talk Live notes, Kings perversely broad statement would cover a ban on the possession of rocks:
And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him 1st Samuel, Chapter 17
King also displays a poor grasp of history. No judicial power is required to extend the Second Amendment to cover weapons of war, because theyre precisely what it was intended to cover in the first place. |

Cole continues to defend Second Amendment rights and actively seeks legislation to increase "firearms freedom in Michigan."
"Gun laws are restrictive and put law-abiding citizens on the opposite side of the law too often," he said.
He recently co-sponsored legislation that would enable law-abiding citizens to carry concealed pistols without obtaining a government permit. |

This situation seems to have come about largely due to the wealth and power of the NRA and its ability to influence elections. Modern assault weapons could not even have been imagined when the Second Amendment was written. Our candidates seem to be bought with money and fear of losing campaign funding rather than representing the citizens they serve. Do we really believe that every single Republican candidate who is supported by the NRA is truly so heartless as to refuse to legislate in favor of innocent children and families who are victims of homegrown violence in far greater numbers than those from foreign terrorists?

The bill calls for what proponents refer to as constitutional carry, or allowing those who can legally buy a firearm to carry a concealed weapon without having to obtain a permit.
It also allows for open carry, which grants weapons holders the ability to carry their firearms on their person for everyone to see. The law still would bar carrying a firearm while committing a crime.
Smith was not alone in trying to delay a vote. Several Republicans joined in, because they were against how the bill was advanced or didnt like parts of the proposed law. |

A controversial gun bill is headed to the governors desk, signifying a huge victory for gun-rights advocates.
The bill includes a stand-your-ground provision and the right to carry concealed firearms on state Capitol grounds.
Most aspects of the legislation would take effect July 1, but a provision to allow minors younger than 14 to use handguns with parental or guardian supervision would take effect immediately. |

On March 23, 2014, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) signed the Safe Carry Protection Act into law, thereby allowing school boards to arm teachers as a means of preventing a Sandy Hook-like attack. Yet over three years later, no school board has acted to allow their teachers to carry guns for defense of themselves and the children.
Days before Deal signed the Act, Breitbart News reported that it would recognize a churchs right to allow its congregants to be armed, allow Georgians with concealed carry permits to carry their guns in unsecured areas of airports, and expand carry privileges for teachers with concealed carry licenses. |

Proponents conceded defeat Thursday on a bill that would have given law enforcement permission to ask a person to see their gun permit.
Before the Judiciary Committee had even posted its final agenda for Fridays meeting, Connecticut Against Gun Violence let its supporters know in an email that the bill would not be raised for debate.
This is the second year proponents had pitched the legislation. Last year, it passed the Public Safety and Security Committee on a 16-9 vote, but never got raised for a vote in the House.
This year, it wasnt only Second Amendment supporters who opposed the proposal. It was lawmakers from urban districts concerned about racial profiling by police. |

House Bill 779 would change the penalties for violations of the states ban on open carry currently a second-degree misdemeanor which carries a $500 fine and up to 60 days in jail to a $25 noncriminal violation payable to the county clerk. It also shields those with a concealed-carry permit from being charged with a crime if their gun becomes temporarily exposed. Floridas Supreme Court last month upheld the states open carry prohibition citing it does not infringe on the Second Amendment. There is no Senate companion to the proposal. |

This suggested bill violates so many constitutional rights it will make your head spin. You merely have to be accused of domestic violence and you are subjected to unwarranted search and seizure. Now you must prove your innocence to get your belongings back. There are already state and federal laws that prevent anyone with a restraining order or convicted of domestic violence from owning or purchasing a firearm. This bill not only violates the Second Amendment but the Fourth, Fifth and Fourteenth of the U.S. Constitution and Articles 1, 11 and 16 of our beloved Vermont Constitution of which Maxine Grad swore an oath to uphold. These rights are not anachronisms. |

With the advent of the .357 Magnum in 1935, dedicated sixgunners began to take handgun hunting seriously. Then 1955s .44 Magnum opened whole new vistas for handgun hunters. Once the big-bore .44 was established there were those who began to look at smallbore varmint cartridges for handguns. Remington came up with the .221 Fireball in their bolt action XP-100 pistol, Ruger chambered the single-shot Hawkeye in the .256 Winchester, and Smith & Wesson came out with the .22 Jet cartridge. |

Yesterday, the Virginia General Assembly held their 2017 Veto Session. During this session, your legislators had the opportunity to override Governor Terry McAuliffes veto of important self-defense legislation, Senate Bill 1299, Senate Bill 1300, House Bill 1852, and House Bill 1853. Unfortunately, some in the General Assembly decided to play politics with your right to self-defense and the lives of domestic violence victims by pandering to the Governors wishes. These bills did not receive enough votes for a veto override. Thankfully, Governor McAuliffes amendment of Senate Bill 1023 was rejected and now heads back to the Governors desk in its original form. |
