"The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) today applauded New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson for signing legislation that expands his state's concealed carry law, allowing more citizens to legally arm themselves for personal protection."
"'Not only did Gov. Richardson's signature extend the valid term of a concealed pistol license to four years,' said CCRKBA Executive Director Joe Waldron, 'but he also lowered the minimum age for obtaining a license to 21 years, and in the process, he recognized the new law as a crime-reduction measure.'" ... |

"In America, everybody sues everybody. ... However, there is one entity that individuals cannot sue when their rights are neglected: the state. Granted, individuals have legal recourse when the government actively violates their rights, but it is still controversial as to whether or not the government should be held responsible for failing to prevent rights violations by private actors." ...
"In 1989, the Court ruled in a similar case that the government could not be sued for violations of rights that were committed by private individuals. ... [E]ven when under the direct care of the state, an individual should not expect the state to fully guarantee his physical security." ... |

"In the wake of the 1999 Columbine High School gun massacre, most Americans were so fed up with the country's wild and woolly gun laws -- or non-laws -- that even the [NRA] went into a brief strategic retreat. Congress was suddenly awash in sensible gun-control proposals, and the NRA came out for trigger locks and 'absolutely gun-free' schools."
"But that was then and this is now. Not only did significant control measures fail after Columbine, but the NRA came roaring back so fast that in 2000 it helped defeat Al Gore. ... And by this year the anti-gun-control atmosphere was so thick and enveloping that when a series of spectacular shootings over the past two months cut down more than 25 Americans, the cry that went up in legislatures across the land was not for more gun control but less." ... |

"A high school student in Red Lake, Minn., kills his grandfather and eight other people before turning the gun on himself; a man shoots his ex-wife and a bystander outside a courthouse in Tyler, Texas; a disappointed litigant in a malpractice case kills a federal judge's husband and mother in Chicago; a rape defendant in Atlanta overpowers a police officer, seizes her gun, and shoots three people to death; and a man walks into a church service at a hotel near Milwaukee and shoots 12 people, killing eight."
"Instead of reevaluating its dogmatic devotion to guns as the answer to every question, the gun lobby has its story and is sticking to it: If only the victims in these cases had been armed (or in the Tyler and Atlanta cases, more heavily armed), then violence could have been avoided or stopped by a gun-wielding citizen." ... |

"A marketing brochure from Barrett Firearms boasts that its 50 caliber sniper rifles are capable of destroying aircraft with a single shot. The company brochure released today by the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence states that jet engines and helicopters "are likely targets for the weapon [50 caliber sniper rifle], making it capable of destroying multi-million dollar aircraft with a single hit delivered to a vital area." The marketing brochure from the late 80's has now become a damning and embarrassing admission by the gun lobby and 50 caliber manufacturers who are now attempting to deny and obfuscate the terrorist threat posed by these lethal weapons. Although Barrett Firearms still markets and sells the model 82-A1 50 caliber sniper rifle -- the model highlighted in the company's brochure -- Barrett Firearms has tried to mislead the media by stating that the brochure referred to rifles only available to the military, an assertion that is simply not true." ... |

The older man, from Yorktown, Ark., had stopped at the gas station, apparently to ask for directions. Editor, Times-Dispatch: Regarding the story, "Monroe Wants Use of Force Reviewed": The article discussed the city Police Department's request of the U.S. Justice Department to review its police shootings for the previous five years. I was not surprised when I saw attorney Steven Benjamin had again used the T-D as a platform to excoriate police officers.
Benjamin stated: "Because the training is inadequate, both police officers and the citizens of Richmond are at greater danger of serious harm," and "if officers are adequately trained, everybody will be safer." As a city resident, I appreciate Benjamin's concern for my safety. However, the fact remains that a Richmond resident is far more likely to be robbed, assaulted, or murdered by a gun-toting criminal than he is to be injured by a police officer.
