Americans still have a fundamental distrust of the supposed benign nature of the coercive power of government. They see guns as their last defense against that coercive power.
In our experience, Australians are not nearly so suspicious of government power. This is a generalisation, but Australians-from our observations so far-seem to basically believe that the government is there to help you, can usually be trusted, and is more or less on your side. |

Under current law, only law enforcement and Corrections officers, military personnel, licensed private investigators, pilots and crew members can possess weapons that use electric currents.
"I believe firearms are a good thing, but I'm concerned about potential stray bullets harming someone, especially in my home," said Garrison, 28, who's taken state concealed pistol license training and is seeking a CCW permit.
"If I shot someone and the bullet went through them, then through a wall or window and hit an innocent bystander on the sidewalk, that's the absolute last thing I'd want to happen trying to defend yourself." |

Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, D-Berkeley, authored AB 2566 in reaction to a state Court of Appeal ruling in January which upheld the voiding of San Francisco's Measure H of 2005, approved by voters to bar city residents from owning handguns or from making or selling firearms or ammunition in the city.
The California Supreme Court is mulling whether to review this ruling, which found state law leaves no room for cities and counties to ban handgun ownership; Hancock's bill, to be heard Tuesday by the Assembly Public Safety Committee, seeks to create that room by removing the state pre-emption entirely. |

To the person who said the lady being attacked in front of the post office had no right to pick up the hammer and hit the man who tried to attack her. Are you nuts? Since when did we lose our right to self defense and to protect ourselves? Since when isn't it our right to come to the aid of the hero who tried to subdue the attacker? She was faced with severe bodily harm and had every right to use whatever devices were at her disposal to protect herself and the other individual trying to help her. You owe her an apology. |

We may be a new organization on campus, but early on we declared that April 16, 2008 would be off-limits for discussing our movement or conducting any activities.
Students for Concealed Carry on Campus at Virginia Tech consists of Virginia Tech students and alumni who respect the right to carry a firearm responsibly as a means of self-defense.
...
To this end, it is clear that holding a protest on a day of remembrance would be quite inappropriate, and we have never considered it.
Any rumors circulating that we're doing otherwise should be addressed by this official statement. ... SCCC at VT has also turned down all requests for interviews to be posted or aired on April 16, and will not take interviews on the day, either. |

There are several overlapping phenomena at work here, none of which should encourage -- or really surprise -- supporters of the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.
One, he's not courting pro-gun voters per se but pro-gun Democratic primary voters, a demographic that will likely recede to insignificance before the general election. Two, even if these voters aren't convinced just yet, this outreach can garner endorsements from figures the demographic does trust. Three, Obama's efforts are a change in tone, not direction, from his life of anti-gun advocacy. This is politics as usual. |

Smith presents a ridiculous argument that a ruling in favor of individual rights would somehow eliminate local, state and federal regulations. Gun laws, like all statutes from the legislative branches, would be subject to legal challenge and would have to demonstrate that restrictions serve a compelling state interest, will be effective at attaining the desired goal and do not unnecessarily compromise individual rights.
A ruling along those lines would retain considerable individual protections, but would not prevent legitimate gun regulations like sensible registration requirements, instant background checks, bans on massively destructive weapons or prohibitions on gun ownership by children, mental incompetents and felons. |

Largest change in Georgia firearms laws in 20 years expands rights of gun owners.
The most notable changes in the bill are provisions allowing those in possession of a valid Georgia Firearms License (GFL) to carry firearms in restaurants serving alcohol where more than 50% of revenue is derived from the sale of food, in State Parks, and on public transportation.
Other changes include allowing those eligible to obtain a GFL the ability to possess a firearm anywhere in their motor vehicle, provisions relating to the timely issuance of GFLs, and a straw purchase penalty for those purchasing firearms intended for disqualified persons. |

Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch once joined in a debate on the death penalty. Hes in favor of it. One of his opponents asked that lame old question, Do you really think the death penalty is a deterrent? Koch replied, I dont know and I dont care. Some crimes are so horrible that they should be punished by death regardless. The questioner would have done better to ask, couldnt the murder have been prevented if the victim could have defended himself? But both questioner and mayor were New Yorkers, where owning a gun is a rare privilege reserved for law enforcement officers, a few store owners and felons. |

SAN ANGELO, Texas Authorities investigating a report of an underage marriage plan a fourth day of searching for children and documents at a compound built by jailed polygamist leader Warren Jeffs south of this West Texas city.
Authorities moved more than 220 women and children from Eldorado to a historic fort-turned-museum here Sunday so that all the children and women could stay in one location as caseworkers continue interviews, said Child Protective Services spokeswoman Marleigh Meisner.

Authorities are working this morning to identify a young man who was shot and killed after he broke into a rural home near Stillman Valley, Ogle County Sheriff Gregory Beitel said. About 11 p.m. Sunday, a man staying at a home in the 9100 block of Meridian Road awakened to the sound of shattered glass and grabbed a handgun after realizing people were inside, Beitel said. The man told deputies at least three people broke into the house, one of whom entered his bedroom and then fled, Beitel said. The houseguest then left the bedroom and came face to face, Beitel said, with a man aiming a firearm at him. The houseguest then fired twice, killing the man, Beitel said. |

Schenectady isnt the only city in the region to experience a rash of gun violence this year. As anyone whos paid attention to the news lately knows, there have been plenty of shootings in Albany, too, prompting the creation of a 13-member task force to study the issue. Action would be a better idea. In Schenectady, a two-month gun amnesty program was announced last week with the cooperation of local clergy. But as of Saturday morning, only a single person had responded. She did, however, turn in seven guns belonging (legally) to her late husband, so thats seven guns that cant find their way to the streets if, say, she had a change of heart in the future and decided to sell them, or if her house was burglarized and the guns got stolen. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Today the taxing power, rather than chattel slavery, is the instrument by which the parasitical element of the population subsists. And that element, which includes politicians, panics at the slightest reduction in the state's power to plunder. Once you start liberating taxpayers, even a little tiny bit, nobody knows where it may end. Joseph Sobran |
