President Barack Obama has pushed the debate on guns in "the wrong direction," former Rep. Asa Hutchinson (R-Ark.) said Sunday. After the Newtown shooting, Hutchinson was tasked by the National Rifle Association with formulating new school safety measures, and that's where "I really believe that our focus should be," he said. ... It's a mistake, Hutchinson added, to think that the federal government can eradicate gun violence by imposing tighter restrictions on guns. |

A nationwide ammunition shortage prompted Gregg County Sheriff Maxey Cerliano to notify deputies in March that they would have to supply their own ammunition for this years firearm qualifications something Cerliano had never done in 13 years in office. The sheriff was able to pull the plug on that plan this past week, when the departments bullet order, placed more than 60 days ago, finally came in. The shipment arrived just in time, since Gregg County deputies must renew their firearm qualifications this month, Cerliano said. ... Like Gregg County, law enforcement agencies nationwide are feeling the squeeze as ammunition flies off the shelves across the country. |

What follows are quotations from the written works which were employed as the means used to sell We The People on the idea of the proposed Constitution. These are excerpts from articles published in various newspapers throughout our nation at that time. Having established that FACT. Sen. Charles Schumer teamed up with NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly today to call on Congress to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill. Schumer, Kelly and victims of gun violence urged Congress to pass gun control measures that include universal background checks. The bill, which could go before Congress this week, would prevent anyone with a felony, mental illness or record of spousal abuse from obtaining a gun. The proposal needs 60 votes to pass. |

"It takes an incredible amount of self discipline and concentration to really get good at it," said Coach Chuck Boykin. The teens on the junior rifle team range in age from 12 to 18. "Shooting is a very mental sport. It's 90 percent mental, ten percent physical," Logan Ogden said. It's that intense focus that has Logan Ogden, 14, and Breanna Flint, 18, preparing for the National Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs this week. "One target has ten bulls and you can get ten points on each bull. You want to try to hit that little tiny dot in the center to get a ten," Ogden said. Last year's Junior Olympics winner in Logan's category received a score of 576 out of 600. |

Ammunition was the hot item Saturday as gun enthusiasts from around Southern California converged on the Ontario Convention Center for the first day of the two-day Crossroads of the West Gun Show. The Ontario Convention Center was busy with some people arriving and others leaving with such purchases as walking sticks to firearms cases. But of all the items available, ammo was at the top of many shopping lists. At one point, a line to purchase ammunition was snaking around the exhibit hall, said Bob Templeton, the owner of the gun show. It was taking about three hours for shoppers to make their way to the head of the line, he said. |

Former Rep. Asa Hutchinson (R-AR), who led the National Rifle Association's school safety task force, said Sunday that President Obama should have turned to school safety measures rather than broad gun restrictions after the Newtown school shooting because government cannot solve America's violence problem. On "Fox News Sunday," host Chris Wallace pressed Hutchinson, saying that his report for the NRA on how to make schools safer will do nothing to protect Americans in shopping malls or movie theaters from a gunman. Hutchinson responded that government cannot stop violence in American society. |

After striking again early Sunday morning, a Beaumont serial robber has finally been caught, but not before he targeted a victim who fought back.
Beaumont and Lumberton Police collectively captured 21-year-old Scott Allen Willis Sunday after he committed two more robberies in Lumberton.
Police say Willis, along with the help of 22-year-old Malik Washington and 21-year-old Ariel Malveaux, first abducted a woman in the 200 block of Village Creek Parkway.
They drove her to an ATM and made her withdraw money before releasing her.
Then they attempted to rob two women at their home in the 100 block of Dennis Drive.
However, one of the women had the chance to grab a handgun from inside the home and shoot Willis in the abdomen. |

A relatively recent scholarly book about the history of the gun control controversy should be required reading for legislators and anyone else who values facts over strident opinion.
"Gun Fight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America," by Adam Winkler (Norton, 2011), offers some thought-provoking revelations about the National Rifle Association as background to a dramatic description of District of Columbia v. Heller, the landmark 2008 Supreme Court decision affirming the Second Amendment right of citizens to possess firearms. |

As the Senate returns from a two-week spring recess Monday, topping its agenda is legislation to try to curb the kind of gun violence that took the lives of 20 first-graders in Connecticut last December.
Recent polls show broad popular support for enhanced background checks and bans on military-style guns and ammunition. But many members of Congress side with gun-rights advocates who oppose such measures.
And those advocates are increasingly making the case that Americans need guns to fight government tyranny. |

The renewed fight over gun control legislation is expected to heat up this week in the United States Congress. Democrats and Republicans are fighting over the need for universal background checks.
Making our communities safer is the goal of universal background checks according to many Democrats. Those Democrats are calling on the Senate to close the loophole that allows unchecked gun purchases. But opponents of the bill are vowing to fight any further infringement of their second amendment rights.
Gun control legislation is once again on the front burner in Congress. Back from a two-week break, Senate Democrats are pushing for tighter gun control measures in the form of universal background checks. |

But there's a third group: chiefs and sheriffs who have outright declared that they will not enforce any gun control measure that they deem unconstitutional.
It is very easy to find admiration for a leader who is willing to put principle over politics. In a world of self agenda, it is refreshing to see someone stand for something especially when done at risk to themselves and, potentially, their careers.
But this is an extremely dangerous slope.
Whether appointed or elected, police chiefs and sheriffs do not have the power to decide what is and what is not constitutional. |

Many factors are driving the presidents and OFAs inability to gain traction on the issue. Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.), who has a B lifetime rating from the National Rifle Association (NRA) and is trying to protect red-state Democrats up for reelection in 2014, simply does not have the votes for a bill to impose greater controls on background checks. They dont have the votes to get to 51, much less 60, says a GOP aide. Theyre losing on policy and theyre losing on message. Last week, I announced I would join efforts to filibuster any gun control proposals that seek to restrict the rights of Americans who have never violated the law. Many Floridians, including our large number of hunters and sportsmen, use guns regularly and responsibly and do not deserve to be harassed or further regulated. Especially in light of recent shootings, safety is everyones priority. But the way to increase safety is not to take away the rights of responsible gun owners, including those wishing to protect themselves and their loved ones. Instead, by ensuring that those who obey the law can remain the first line of defense against violence, America will become better equipped to handle potential tragedies as they arise. |

Acting largely under the radar amid a flurry of proposals that would curb constitutional rights, an advocacy organization for the Second Amendment has been taking down gun restrictions one at a time.
The latest success by the Second Amendment Foundation has been to obtain a preliminary injunction against part of a concealed carry law in New Mexico that, according to a lawsuit, violates the right of equal protection under the law.
The organization, which was integral in the cases that established that the Second Amendment applies to states and individuals, previously launched actions against gun restrictions in New Jersey, Maryland, New York and several other states.

The real goal (for now--nothing said here is meant to question that the eventual goal is to ban "assault weapons," and a great deal more than that) is a private sales ban, or "universal background checks," as per the current gun-hater lingo. And nearly every proponent of the private sales ban tries to justify this legislation, about which the Sipsey Street Irregulars' Mike Vanderboegh points out that "not even King George the Third was so grasping," by claiming that "nearly 40 percent of all gun sales are made by private sellers who are exempt from" the requirement to perform a background check on a prospective firearms purchaser. |
