This year, one of two gun bills lawmakers have been considering is the most high-profile prospect for resurrection. The legislation, introduced into the Senate in January, would allow workers to leave registered guns locked inside their cars in their employers parking lots. It has the backing of the National Rifle Association, usually enough to ensure passage in Georgia. |

I read through 13 or 14 documents from states along the Eastern sea board as well as our own state of Illinois. I found the Bill of Rights included in 11 of these state Constitutions include the right of the individual to keep and bear arms for the defense of self, state and country including our own state of Illinois.
I find this to be compelling and irrefutable evidence our Founding Fathers found it essential the individual be guaranteed the government could not and should not be able to take this right away. |

In a nutshell, defending, designating, and protecting wilderness and roadless areas (the gold standard for wildlife habitat and hunting) is in the long-run nothing short of defending our constitutional right to bear arms. As wilderness and roadless areas go, so goes habitat and hunting and support from the gunless majority, and so eventually goes our Second Amendment rights. Dont believe me? |

Mayor Adrian Fenty's administration wants D.C.'s gun ban upheld despite a federal appeals court overturning the ban last month.
A statement from Fenty's office said that on Monday, they will appeal the decision. They plan to petition for the case to be reheard at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Fenty and many other groups have publicly shown their support for the gun ban in recent weeks.
The appeals court overturned the District's long-standing handgun ban on March 9, rejecting the city's argument that the Second Amendment right to bear arms applied only to militias. |

Zumbo was one of us, and he was attacked for giving his opinion when we have been asking for it for almost 30 years now. Because some didnt like what he had to say, several forces combined to ruin him.
It seems that a few folks forgot about that First Amendment.
Ed.: Let's kindly remind Jamie Svrcek that the first amendment doesn't mean you can insult the people you depend on for your livelyhood and not suffer any consequences. |

If you are a hunter or gun owner, it is imperative that you learn about the latest stroke of Pennsylvania legislative genius -- House Bill 760.
The words printed on the four pages of this bill tear up firearm ownership rights like a big bulldozer ripping into a tranquil state park. In addition, the law would surely set the stage for more gun restrictions and even confiscations. It is not a stretch to see that the proposed annual registration cost to gun owners will limit ownership and further reduce the ranks of hunters. |

I feel the same about the owners of military knockoffs. I wish they were not so ... well, embarrassing. More than 200 of them made a run at me with amazingly poisonous e-mails, going so far as to post misleading reviews of my book, A Chukar Hunters Companion, on Amazon.com, in an effort to reduce the previously high rating of the book. But such infantile behavior by a few louts doesnt alter the basic beliefs I share with them. We believe the ownership of guns is an individual right given us by the Second Amendment and we believe in the ultimate right of people to protect themselves, their homes and their families.
Ed.: I hope Pat Wray misspoke about the 2nd Amendment "giving" us the right instead of protecting it. |

Craig Wagner claimed in a March 24 letter that the Second Amendment right to bear arms doesn't include handguns, because handguns are part of a "subset" of arms "that, as the term is used today, did not exist" when the amendment was adopted. Fair enough, although handguns are a whale of a subset.
Now let's apply Mr. Wagner's principle to a provision found in the amendment just prior to this one: Free speech. ... |

There are closed-circuit cameras like this all over Britain, 4.2 million of them, one for every 14 people in the country. By some estimates, each Briton is caught on camera an average of 300 times per day. Within 200 yards of George Orwell's London house there are 32 closed-circuit cameras scanning people's every move.
You'll recall Orwell wrote "1984," about a totalitarian state manipulating its citizens' every move via screens with cameras in the 1940s - the same decade that saw Britain fighting totalitarians in World War II under Prime Minister Winston Churchill. |

Shelly Parker did everything she could to keep her home safe. She owned a dog. She called D.C. police when she suspected illegal activity on her block. She installed a security camera on her front window.
Her crime-fighting efforts made an impression. One night, Parker found her car window smashed and saw rocks scattered around the vehicle. She felt it was retaliation for her vigilance.
"That really disturbed me to my core," recalled Parker, who said she often received verbal taunts while walking her malamute, Barney, near her home on the northeastern edge of Capitol Hill.
A police officer gave her some advice, Parker said.
Get a gun, he told her. |

A month after their first attempt got vetoed, legislators are taking another stab at making a 2006 self-defense law retroactive.
The 2006 law made it easier for defendants to claim self-defense, and many supporters expected it would help Harold Arthur Fish, a hiker convicted in an eastern Arizona trailside shooting. |

The story of Fish involves a second-degree murder conviction, two dogs, a gun, a hiking trail and a stream of public interest.
The Legislature passed a bill this session that would have allowed Fish to more-easily argue self-defense in a new trial. The bill was vetoed by Gov. Janet Napolitano. |

The shooting occurred just before 3:30 a.m. when deputies were called to 470 High St. in Jefferson on a report of a robbery in which a gun was fired, Rau said. The homeowner, Michael Vogler, 59, told deputies that he had confronted a male intruder in his house, Rau said. Vogler fired one shot during a struggle in which the intruder tried to get Vogler's gun. After the shot was fired, the intruder ran into the garage of the home, dove head-first through a window and ran from the area, Rau said. Vogler suffered minor injuries to his head and neck during the struggle. |

In January, a 13-year-old wielding what looked like a .38-caliber revolver tried to rob a Chinese restaurant in Mount Vernon, N.Y. In February, a 16-year-old boy in Clifton, N.J., accompanied by a friend, stuck what appeared to be a .45-caliber handgun in a mans chest and stole his cocker spaniel. And in the fall, a teenager in a pickup truck with other youths pulled up to a man walking with his nephew in Stonington, Conn., and pointed what looked like a Walther PPK pistol at the mans head. In each case the weapon used was not real. They were toy, airsoft or BB guns that the police say look so authentic that veteran law enforcement officers are unable to tell the difference, even from a few feet away. |

An editorial writer's botched attempt to highlight an open record -- the list of Virginians licensed to carry a concealed handgun -- resulted Friday in the record being closed. Acting on the advice of Attorney General Bob McDonnell, the Virginia State Police said they will no longer release the information under the state's open records law. The issue of hidden handguns, who gets to carry them and whether their names and addresses should be publicized hit a flash point last month when Roanoke Times editorial writer Christian Trejbal used his column to encourage readers to check up on who in their community was "packing heat."

A city county councilor wants to expand the city's gun law. She says it's about keeping residents safe. But opponents see it as an infringement on rights. Under the proposed changes, people could still shoot at authorized firing ranges and they could still shoot in self-defense. What they couldn't do is shoot guns into the air, as some do New Year's Eve, or hunt or target practice in areas close to neighborhoods. It's a law already on the books for the old city limits, that Democratic Councilor Angela Mansfield wants expanded countywide, to cover areas now well-developed like hers. |

Pete Grannis said he was only trying to prevent mean-spirited kids from setting squirrels on fire and keep careless trappers from snaring domestic pets. But the longtime state assemblyman's record favoring efforts to strengthen animal cruelty laws and let counties regulate trapping ignited a firestorm this winter, when Gov. Eliot Spitzer tapped him to head the state's powerful Department of Environmental Conservation. Gun groups and hunting organizations charged that Grannis' legislative record revealed him to be an anti-hunting, anti-trapping Manhattan liberal. That concern was carried forth by the Republican-controlled state Senate, making for Spitzer's most contentious confirmation fight so far. |

Symbols mean everything in religion, making it especially fitting that a national interfaith project called God Not Guns was launched in the middle of the holy days of three faiths - Easter, Passover and Milad-e-Nabi (the birthday of Prophet Muhammed). God Not Guns, a branch of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, is a league of faith-based institutions established "to raise awareness of gun violence as a spiritual and moral crisis." Amen to that. |

...When asked on Tuesday about his stance on guns, Mitt Romney, as he has more than once, portrayed himself as a sportsman, a hunter pretty much all my life, who strongly supported a right to bear arms. ... In any event, a campaign spokesman, Eric Fehrnstrom, said, the candidates support for gun rights comes not from any hunting background but rather from his respect and appreciation for the rights enshrined in our Constitution. He fundamentally understands the Second Amendment does more than protect the rights of hunters, Mr. Fehrnstrom said. It protects the rights of all Americans to bear arms, to protect themselves and their property.

40 states now allow their citizens to obtain conceal-carry permits for handguns. Some people say that's dangerous, while others say it allows them to protect themselves.
If you have a story of self-defense involving the aid of a gun and would like to tell it to 20/20, please fill out the form below. A "20/20" producer may contact you." |

"...Resolved, That, in cases of gross and intolerable oppression, which, in a Government like that of the United States can be little else than a hypothesis, the natural right of self-defence remains; but which must, in the nature of things, be an appeal to arms, and subject to all the consequences of resistance to the constituted authorities. In such a case, the measure is revolutionary, and the result remains in the hands of the A. Almighty..." |

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is taking a second shot at describing his hunting experience. The former Massachusetts governor has called himself a lifelong hunter, yet his campaign acknowledged that he has been on just two hunting tripsone when he was 15 and the other just last year. Campaigning in Indianapolis on Thursday, Romney said he has hunted small game since his youth. ... As governor, he supported the state's strict gun-control laws and signed into law one of the nation's tougher assault weapons laws. He joined the National Rifle Association last August as a "Lifetime" member.

TO REMEMBER |
As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms. Tench Coxe in `Remarks on the First Part of the Amendments to the Federal Constitution' under the Pseudonym "A Pennsylvanian" in the Philadelphia Federal Gazette, June 18, 1789 at 2 col. 1. |
