So the Republican gun advocates, taken to their logical conclusion, defend your ability to possess a flame-thrower if you can get your hands on one, maybe surplus from Vietnam, where they loved that smell of napalm in the morning.
Its not the owning of it. Its only the criminally intended use of it. You see. Or not.
Thats the same logic by which gun rights extremists oppose restrictions on the manufacture and distribution of automatic assault weapons suitable for urban gang warfare to enforce the drug culture. Its not that the gun is designed to fire in a way that enhances the multiplicity and efficiency of human killing. Its that the guns function is irrelevant until a person engages that function. |

The ACLU represented three library users and the pro-gun Second Amendment Foundation, arguing the district should be ordered to provide unblocked access to the Internet when adults request it.
The plaintiffs include a Ferry County woman who wanted to do research on tobacco use by youth; a professional photographer blocked from using YouTube and from researching art galleries and health issues; and an Okanogan man unable to access his blog, as well as information relating to gun use by hunters.
The Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation contends the library district blocked online access to Women & Guns, a magazine it sponsors covering topics such as self-defense and recreational shooting.

At the same time, the GOP is resisting a real approach to slow down terrorists. Republicans want to make sure we protect terrorists second amendment right to bear arms.
Last week, Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York testified before Congress. Shouldnt FBI agents have the authority to block sales of guns and explosives to those on the terror watch lists and deemed too dangerous to fly? I actually believe that they should, Bloomberg told senators. Federal law currently only allows the government to block sales of guns and explosives for a very limited number of reasons and being on the terrorist watch list is not one of them. |

Police say that the family was asleep in their home, on the 8000 block of Tonto Place, when an intruder broke in, just after 4:30 AM. The couple awakened to the sound of the home invasion and confronted the intruder, who is said to have attacked them in the master bedroom, according to police. Fearing for his safety and the safety of his family, the homeowner reportedly drew and fired his gun, striking the intruder and ending the attack. A suspect, reportedly identified through fingerprints as 20 year old Steven Abelta, was taken to Beaumont Army Medical Center, where he later died of his wounds. No injuries to the homeowners or their children were reported. |

Regarding Dana Milbank's May 6 column ["The NRA, standing up for terrorists' rights," Washington Sketch]:
In 1950, Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-Wis.) waved his infamous "enemies" list. Innocent Americans were imprisoned and many more "blacklisted." McCarthyites exploited the buzzword "communism" to intimidate.
Today's McCarthy? New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Today's buzzword? "Terrorism." Today's list? The secret terrorist watch list, with a million names or more. No one knows who's on it, but we've heard the names of, among others, the late senator Edward M. Kennedy and Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.). Eight-year-old Boy Scout Mikey Hicks has been singled out for aggressive airport screening. Ridiculous. |

I believe the political stars are aligning right now for the opening of a new front in the battle against our gun rights: via the election and work of an anti-gun president, the disarmament passions of the Washington elite and the United Nations, the appointments of gun prohibitionists from the White House to the Supreme Court and the funding of an anti-Second Amendment movement by billionaire progressives like George Soros.
In Part One, I discussed President Obama's anti-Second Amendment record and his administration's goals to use dormant treaties and global agencies to loosen the boundaries and binds of the Second Amendment. |

Obama has apparently taken a step to disarm America, according to a document that has been leaked. The step is strategic and very cunning: begin with the military.
The document reveals a proposal to force all military personnel to register all firearmseven privately owned firearms that are kept in their private residences. It would force a regular inventory of all such firearms concurrent with the regular inventories of military weapons.
Soldiers maintaining privately owned firearms in their private residences, off base, would be required to keep their weapons in locked containers or with trigger locks, unloaded, and have the ammunition secured separately from the weapon in a locked container. |

As Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistan-born American, grabbed international headlines last week for an alleged terrorism attempt in New York's Times Square, other suspected terrorists received much less media coverage as they appeared before a judge in Detroit.
The judge ruled that all nine white, American-born members of the Hutaree Christian militia group, charged with conspiracy to commit sedition and attempted use of weapons of mass destruction, should be released on bail while awaiting trial. |

Knowing that the Government Accountability Office has reported that about 95 percent of people on the watchlist are neither American citizens nor legal residents of the United States, Sen. Graham pointed out "there are 400,000 people on the watchlist." He then asked, "what percentage of them are American citizens?"
Lautenberg and his allies sat silently, dumbfounded, for what seemed an eternity, until Kelly, dutifully taking the punch so his boss wouldn't have to, sputtered that he was unable to come up with a figure. Since it was obvious that the anti-gunners didn't get the point, Sen. Graham clarified it for them: "The law prohibits the purchase of a gun unless you're an American citizen or a legal resident alien." |

As explained in todays column, Chuck DeVore trumps these other two in conservative credentials. So this lightning round of questions gave some interesting results.
DeVore and Fiorina cited second amendment while Campbell said the government should deny gun-buying rights for people on the no-fly list.
Campbells astonished the other two would permit the gun sale.
Campbell rebounded by apparently trying to out-right those who who just positioned themselves to his right. He said there should be no Miranda rights for terrorist suspects. DeVore says there should be if the suspectg is a citizen, no if a foreign combatant. Fiorina agrees with DeVore. |

Under current law, the background checks licensed gun dealers must perform are designed to stop sales to nine categories of people, including felons, fugitives, unlawful drug users and aliens illegally in the United States.
The categories do not include suspicion and the NRA argues that suspicion is not enough for Congress to curb or take away the constitutional right, enshrined in the second amendment, to own and bear arms. Given the lobbys enormous influence on Congress, the argument is probably strong enough to block, or at least delay, legislation that would close what is known as the terror gap. |

The Nebraska Firearms Owners Association ... today called on the city of Omaha to end its practice of registering firearms, in the wake of a case involving a private citizen who fatally shot an armed robber, and who continues to be denied the ability to register a new firearm by the Omaha Police Department, which took his defensive sidearm used in the shooting into evidence.
...
"Mister McCullough has been cleared of any wrongdoing in this case," Gottlieb observed, "yet the police are retaining his firearm, and will not allow him to register a replacement gun. He intervened in a dangerous situation, at great personal risk, and now he is being put at continued risk by a police department policy that is both arbitrary and capricious." |

Displaying a gun to warn a potential attacker away would not be considered a crime under a bill up for a vote this week in the New Hampshire Senate.
The bill would make it legal to respond to a threat by displaying a gun. It is more limited than an earlier bill that would have expanded the use of deadly force, which was vetoed by Gov. John Lynch in 2006. That proposal would have allowed the use of deadly force in public whenever someone felt threatened. |

The St. James Peace/Justice Committee didn't have the cash this year to pay people for turning in unwanted guns. But 18 handguns and long guns were handed over to the committee on Saturday in the parking lot of St. Cyril's Church in Binghamton's First Ward, said Jack Gilroy, co-chairman of the committee. Membersgave out flowers in exchange for the weapons, Gilroy said. "Most people went away pretty happy," Gilroy said. The event was held this year in conjunction with Mother's Day weekend. |

Dozens of people marched in the Bronx Saturday as part of an anti-gun effort. They say their message to the politicians in Washington is to close the loopholes in the laws that regulate the sale of guns. The marchers also wanted to tell people in their community to "celebrate life and put down the guns." Saturday's march and rally in St. Mary's Park was organized by the Bronx Million Mom March chapter of the Brady Campaign to prevent gun violence. |

Once again, it didn't take New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg long to exploit a failed terrorist attack to advance his own agenda. Hizzoner was in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, May 5, lobbying Congress to adopt the Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009 -- H.R. 2159 -- sponsored by Rep. Peter King (R-NY) and -- S. 1317 -- sponsored by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ). Of course, who can disagree with that? It sounds, as Bloomberg said, like "common sense" to deny those identified by the FBI as "dangerous terrorists" on its terror watchlist, the right to purchase firearms. |

Two years ago, a police officer in a Brooklyn precinct became gravely concerned about how the public was being served. To document his concerns, he began carrying around a digital sound recorder, secretly recording his colleagues and superiors.
He recorded precinct roll calls. He recorded his precinct commander and other supervisors. He recorded street encounters. He recorded small talk and stationhouse banter. In all, he surreptitiously collected hundreds of hours of cops talking about their jobs.

SEATTLE -- Why did it take nearly three weeks for video of a Seattle police officer hurling a racial slur and then stomping on an innocent man to be shown on local television?
The video was shot the night of April 17 by Jud Morris, who worked earlier in the evening as a freelance photographer for KCPQ.
He said he first offered the footage to Q-13. At first, management was excited about the video, Morris said.
But two days later, "I was told 'Were definitely not going to run this. Its not egregious. The cop didnt do anything wrong.'"

After Luis M. Perez, 30, chased down the three 17-year-olds via cab and police, the teens were arrested and charged with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, reports said. But one of the teens told police that the man was trying to buy an illegal gun from them and officers immediately searched him, finding razor and a bag with 50 grams of suspected marijuana in his back pocket, reports said.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling in terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? [...] The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!" Alexander Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago (Chapter 1 "Arrest") |
