Militiamen and woman camping on Cliven Bundys cattle ranch are packing up and heading to Utah where another protest against the Bureau of Land Management will happen Saturday. Ryan Payne, a Montana resident who had been staying at the ranch for a month, said he drove eight hours to arrive in the eastern Utah town this morning. Three militia members from the ranch and a handful of people from a group called Citizens Action Network came to Utah, too, he said. "This is where its happening Saturday, he said. They and others Saturday will be armed, he said, and ride ATVs into Recapture Canyon, an area the BLM declared off-limits to motorized vehicles in 2007. The ride is organized by San Juan County, Utah, Commissioner Phil Lyman. |

As the legislative session races to an end, gun rights advocates say now is the time to keep a watchful eye on lawmakers in Montpelier.
The closer they get to that final gavel, the faster the horses get traded over there in Montpelier, Evan Hughes, vice president of the Vermont Federation of Sportsmens Clubs, told Vermont Watchdog.
Hughes is one of many Second Amendment defenders camped out at the Capitol this week to make sure anti-gun legislation doesnt get stealthily passed in the legislative sessions final hours. The session, which began in January, could end as soon as Saturday. |

Washington, D.C. is the only place in the country where no one is allowed to legally carry a gun outside the home.
District residents are trying to challenge the law in court, but the justice system has denied them due process. The almost five-year delay in Palmer v. District of Columbia is so extreme that some suspect political games.
In Oct. 2009, Tom Palmer and three other D.C. residents filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court that said the total ban on carrying firearms -- open or concealed -- violated their Second Amendment rights.
On Tuesday, Alan Gura, the attorney for the Palmer case, filed a second writ of mandamus with the U.S. Court of Appeals asking it to force the lower court to issue a decision. |

Thanks to the National Rifle Association and its lapdogs in Congress, Americans may possess semiautomatic rifles and other firearms designed to kill humans in offensive mode; that is, they are not just for self-defense.
Ed.: My rifle must be a lemon--I can't seem to locate any 'offensive mode' setting. |

The killing of Diren Dide has made Missoula, Montana, famous for the worst possible reason. On April 27, the German exchange student snuck into the garage of a neighbor, Markus Kaarma. According to the New York Times, the homeowner had been rattled by a recent run of burglaries. That was why he fired four shotgun blasts into the night, killing Dide and sparking an international incident. America cannot continue to play cowboy, Dides father told a German news channel. |

The radical Colorado gun restrictions that were put into place a year ago following lobbying from the White House remain under challenge in court.
But in real life, their application is causing major issues.
For example, a legal handgun belonging to a woman who was in a car crash was taken into custody by police as she was taken to the hospital.
Officers now say theres no legal way for them to return it to her, even though shes permitted to carry it. Even though it belongs to her. Even though police dont really even want it. |

Within minutes of news breaking on a morning of a shooting on Tuesday April 29, 2014, at a FedEx facility in Kennesaw, Georgia, anti-gunners were already banging the drums for gun control.
While our first thoughts here at Georgia Gun Owners are to send out prayers to the victims and their families, the all-too predictable calls for gun control from gun-grabbers is nothing less than despicable.
...
While details continue to emerge, one picture should remain seared in the minds of those in the media and across the country the Gun Free Zone signs posted right on the front of the FedEx building. |

Mexico's government plans on Saturday to begin demobilizing a vigilante movement of assault rifle-wielding ranchers and farmers that formed in the western state of Michoacan and succeeded in largely expelling the Knights Templar cartel when state and local authorities couldn't.
The ceremony in the town of Tepalcatepec, where the movement began in February 2013, will involve the registration of thousands of guns by the federal government and an agreement that the so-called "self-defense" groups will either join a new official rural police force or return to their normal lives and acts as voluntary reserves when called on. |

While todays continuing coverage of the mass kidnapping of girls in northeast Nigeria includes the revelation that Nigerian security forces allegedly had advanced warning of the raid, the mainstream press is largely ignoring another critical aspect of the story, that residents in the Borno state apparently want the government to give them guns for self-defense against the militant Boko Haram group. |

I am a historian, not a gun owner. It seems to me that Newbower assumes too much. It is at least equally likely that the Founders would have specifically endorsed private ownership of modern personal weapons.
Consider: The Founders had just fought a bloody war against a government perceived to be tyrannical. They risked their lives and fortunes to overthrow this government. They were clearly concerned that responsible citizens should have weaponry that would allow them to fight against a tyrannical government should the need again arise. No less a statesman than Thomas Jefferson explicitly stated as much in his writings. |

Milwaukee media reported on May 5 that Clarke received a threatening email that included a racial slur. While it isnt the first time hes received a death threat, the sender used a pseudonym and scrambled the IP address from where it was sent, and for those reasons, Clarke and the FBI are taking the threat seriously.
Clarke is a vocal advocate of gun ownership and the right to self-defense. Most recently he spoke at the National Rifle Associations annual convention (and interviewed by Guns.com). Last year, he aired several public service announcements advising people in his county to arm themselves because police couldnt be there to protect them. |

The justifiable need requirement survived two lower court challenges, which were upheld in 2012 by the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals. The plaintiffs petitioned the Supreme Court to challenge the appeals court ruling. This week, the Supreme Court rejected the challenge, leaving in place the 3rd Circuits ruling and New Jerseys law.
This marks the third time the Supreme Court has refused to hear such a challenge. However, there is still a possibility they will have to weigh in on the issue. |

The more smart guns that take the place of old, unsafe and outdated firearms the better. Because there is no technological reason that smart guns arent already available for sale, New Jersey lawmakers should try to deem the mandate already enforceable. Doing so would take the pressure off individual stores interested in carrying the smart-gun products, and it would promote the rapid introduction of the technology into a big state. |

Yesterday, the Oklahoma State Senate voted 39-0 to override Gov. Mary Fallins veto of House Bill 2461.
The vote comes eight days after the House voted 86-3 to do the same. Since the override has passed both legislative chambers, with overwhelming bipartisan support, HB 2461 has been enacted into law.
It will take effect on November 1, 2014. With the successful override, Oklahoma becomes the fifth state to enact shall sign legislation this year. |

Detroit residents are increasingly arming themselves and fending off intruders with the tacit approval of Police Chief James Craig, who said he supports efforts by people to fight back against criminals when they are in fear for their lives.
Craig raised some eyebrows when he noted publicly in January that firearms legally obtained by citizens "could be a deterrence to violent crime," although he has been clear to defend his comments as not supporting vigilantism.
