From the town that has armed Germany since the 1800s, Andreas Heeschen is fighting a very 21st century battle. The antagonists include regulators and bondholders.
At stake is control of Heckler & Koch, an iconic brand of military and police weapons that descends from Mauser, which made rifles for 19th century empires and later for the Nazis.
Confronting declining sales and creditor concerns, Heeschen, H&K's owner, has a plan to turn the tide: tapping into Americans' love of firearms. ...
The company started preparing for a big push into the US last summer, when it began modifying its machinery to switch production from military rifles to pistols.

The heresy? Fride posted a 4,000 word missive to his congregationLuther only a posted a meager 2,500 or so wordstitled Were Not in Mayberry Anymore, Toto, in which he justified the idea that his parishioners arm themselves, as the Detroit Free Press phrased it, in accordance with the law of the State of Michigan, and attend the 8-hour long firearms safety and training classes required to legally obtain a concealed pistol license (CPL). Classes would be offered at parish facilities. Its not as if he said anything outrageous like obtaining a CPL should be regarded as a new sacrament or any such thing.

Rick Ector of Ricks Firearms Academy in Detroit says hes giving free shooting lessons to the first 300 women who sign up.

We have a firearms instructor who is certified through the National Rifle Association (NRA) who is there with that woman every step of the process, Ector said. We ensure that the environment is safe and we leave women feeling very empowered.

The Lone Star State is far from the permissive gun law bastion that the media likes to portray, but it still generally respects the natural right of citizens to defend themselves with the most efficient tools availablefirearms. I legally carry a handgun here in Texas every day. Its not easy or convenient, but I see it as my duty to myself and those I care about. I have spent thousands of hours in training and hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition in an effort to ensure that I have the skills necessary to prevail over any threat I may someday face.

Ed.: Texas doesn't have a right to carry handguns, though a Texan may ask for permission to do so.

Framing the question on gun violence

The debate over gun rights vs. gun control often gets mired in a battle of statisticshow many die each year by gunfire, how many crimes do carry license holders commit, how many violent crimes occur per annum and is that number rising or fallingand while those of us who support gun ownership and carry can win by the numbers, we have to recognize that many people arent persuaded by data. A good story that plays on the emotions or an appeal to our basic values will sway far more than will spreadsheets.

On Saturday, Jesse Jackson rallied outside Chucks Gun Shop in Riverdale, Illinois, against AK-47s, saying, More guns make us less secure.

Wearing a hat emblazoned with Mothers Against Guns, Jackson said, Theres no place in this city for AK-47s. Theres no place in these cities for automatic weapons. Street gangs are more armed than the police are. Nobody is secure til all of us are secure.

He added, This is not about gun rights, its about civilized behavior. Its about increasing life options.

The Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network is targeting gun shops as part of its public awareness campaign to try to prevent deaths.

An example is a poster on display in a Memphis gun store noting that suicides in Tennessee far outnumber homicides, and firearms are the leading method, The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/1RrFVxk) reported. The sign lists a crisis hotline.

Will Bass, the gun shop's general manager, said it's good to have anti-suicide messages posted in the shop, just in case a customer is thinking about ending his or her own life. "To hopefully get them thinking 'Maybe this isn't the best option,'" Bass said.

At first glance, it seems absurd to suggest that a small company on the outskirts of St. Louis could be a serious player in the race to provide the U.S. Army with its next handgun.

This is, after all, a major event in the realm of military weapons having happened only twice in the past 100 or so years. And its expected to draw the attention of the industrys most powerful names, including Smith & Wesson, Beretta, Ruger and Glock.

And then theres tiny Detonics, a five-person operation in Millstadt that fashions itself more tech company than gunmaker.

New Conservative legislation that changes the gun licensing system cleared a House of Commons committee last week and is on track to become law before the summer recess and a likely fall election.

Bill C-42, dubbed the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act, has drawn sharp criticism even within the sport-shooting community but nonetheless remains grist for Conservative get-out-the-vote efforts, especially in rural Canada.

Nearly twice as many Bridgewater residents have a license to carry a gun as seven years ago.

In Pembroke, the number of so-called Class A license holders has more than doubled over the same period. Quincy has seen a 96 percent increase and Braintree and Randolph arent far behind.

In 33 communities south of Boston, a total of more than 39,300 people now possess Class A licenses to carry a firearm, a 55 percent increase since 2008, according to data from the states Firearms Records Bureau. The increase has been steady in every community in the region from Quincy south to Plymouth and west to Easton over that time.

In other words, while the NRA criticizes the North Carolina Sheriffs Association for blocking the state bill that would end their current gun purchase approval system, the group has no problem perpetuating the federally mandated system.

Given the fact that any federal restriction on the right to keep and bear arms is explicitly forbidden by the Second Amendment, the NRAs position on this issue seems to contradict the organizations claim that it exists in order to preserve "the right of all law-abiding individuals in the legislative, political, and legal arenas, to purchase, possess and use firearms for legitimate purposes as guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution."

What would you have done had you been at the Cartoon Contest Sunday May 3 in Garland, Texas? Better yet, imagine that you were pulling up to your child's school and you saw these two people in the picture above getting out of a vehicle in the school parking lot?

This could very easily be the most important article you have read in quite some time. It is quite likely some of us will be confronted with a decision of whether to "stand by and do nothing" or take up arms to defend our homeland. If you doubt that possibility, read this:
