"An influential gun-rights group known for backing Republicans is unlikely to endorse President Bush until after the federal assault-weapons ban expires in September."

"Bush supports the renewal of the 10-year ban but has not called on the GOP-controlled Congress to act. If he does so, the move would probably cost him the endorsement of the National Rifle Association (NRA)."

"Some political observers believe that the NRAs endorsement is a certainty, pointing out the groups stinging criticism of Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee."

"More than two years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, many flight attendants say they're still poorly prepared to defend themselves and their passengers." ...

"Wednesday, the association plans to deliver 10,000 letters from flight attendants to the federal Transportation Security Administration demanding that the TSA review security and counter-terrorism training programs of every U.S. airline."

"Some airlines now provide only about an hour's worth of security training for flight attendants and no self-defense training, Deeks said."

U.S. Military considering new cartridge for the next generation of assault rifles

"Shown (from left to right) are the 30 Remington (a rimless 30-30), the new 6.8mm Remington SPC and 5.56mm used in the M-16. The 6.8mm SPC is under serious consideration as the cartridge for the new army assault rifle, the M-8."

"The U.S. Army is pretty serious about adopting a new caliber bullet for its infantry weapons. Now is the time to do it, as a new infantry rifle, the XM-8, is moving quickly through field testing. The proposed new caliber is 6.8mm (also known as .270). Officially, it's the 6.8mm Remington SPC (Special Purpose Cartridge) Special Forces troops were the first to use 6.8mm ammo in combat, and they were impressed with its better (than 5.56mm bullets) ability to take down enemy troops. This should be no surprise, as the 6.8mm round is based on the 19th century 30-30 round. The 6.8mm round is a modified 30-30 caliber round based on the Remington 30 cartridge (first introduced in 1906). The 30-30 is a rimless round first designed for lever action rifles. ..."

"The new U.S. Assault Rifle, the XM8, is a modular weapon that can be fitted with three different barrels (9", 12.5", 20".)"

"The 9" barrel is for a very compact weapon for tank crews or commandoes. With the nine inch barrel and the butt stock retracted, the weapon has an overall length of 21 inches."

"The 12.5" barrel is the standard, for use with the assault rifle or, with the butt stock retracted, it serves as a carbine. The 20 inch barrel is thicker as well and used for the light machine-gun version. There is also a lighter 20 inch barrel for use by snipers."

"The assault rifle can be equipped with the new M320 40mm grenade launcher."

DHS and UK ID card biometric vendor in false ID lawsuit

"At San Jose Superior Court today (11 May) biometrics company Identix will seek to have a product liability and slander lawsuit against it and the States of California and Oregon dismissed. Plaintiffs Roger Benson and Miguel Espinoza are seeking restitution for the damage inflicted on them by duplication in police records which gave them other people's criminal records."

"Benson was wrongfully imprisoned for 43 days for carrying a firearm when a convicted felon, although the felony on his record had been committed by someone else, while Espinoza, had his restaurant business destroyed by a false record of a criminally negligent homicide conviction. The plaintiffs claim that their problems stemmed from Identix's Livescan 10-print, a fingerprint scanner used to enter fingerprint data into police systems. Two months ago Identix was re-confirmed as the winner of a Department of Homeland Security Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) for fingerprint systems, this being worth and estimated $27 million over five years. Identix is also supplying equipment for the UK Passport Service's ID card pilot, so one might reasonably consider that the stakes in San Jose Superior Court will be rather high."

"Personal tragedy is never an excuse to deprive others of their basic human rights. Carma Jackson, the Executive Director of Armed Females of America, lost her young son to gun fire. Was she emotional? Certainly. Did she grieve? Surely. She still does. Did she blame guns, gun manufacturers, the NRA and the President for her sons death? Absolutely not. Because Carma undoubtedly realized that the only person to blame for her tragedy and loss was the person who pulled the trigger. She furthermore realized that disarming innocent, peaceable citizens and rendering them vulnerable to armed criminals would be leading them to certain death the same fate that befell her son."

"I don't think guns should be legal," declared Joan Davis, who traveled to the Capitol from Manhattan. "I don't think the average person should have a gun."

" 'Ideally, I guess I would like to see a total ban on guns,' held Bonnie Rock of suburban D.C. 'But in reality, I would be satisfied with getting rid of the assault weapons and having some real bite to the laws in terms of people getting guns.' Rock, who carried a sign reading 'Bush: Whore of the NRA,' believes the president is 'destroying America.' Rock explains: 'He hasn't done anything right since he was selected to be president. So, there's nothing the man has done for the common good.' She adds that she has already given serious thought to moving to Canada if George W. Bush wins reelection." ...

"Lost on the organizers, as well as the marchers, is the irony of holding a gun-control rally in Washington, D.C. More than a quarter century after the nation's capital banned nearly all private firearms, the city's gun-violence problem has not gotten any better. ..."

"Here's more evidence that a million ain't what it used to be. On Sunday the Million Mom March ended up attracting between 2,000 and 3,000 women to the West Lawn of the Capitol. Though organizers tried to put a brave face on the paltry turnout, it was quite a comedown from Mother's Day four years ago, when the same event attracted hundreds of thousands and was cheered on from the Clinton White House." ...

"It tells you something about where this issue is heading politically that now-Senator Clinton didn't bother showing up this year. We can appreciate that she must have had better things to do on Mother's Day."

"...It seems Linda S. Vaughn, the Southeast Region's Senior Associate Director for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence United with the Million Mom March, may have tried to bait an ad to illicit potential illegal weapons transfers. Since she left her MMM/Brady Campaign office telephone number as the point of contact, the ruse was quickly discovered."

"It doesn't seem to me that any of the weapons listed were illegal (assuming they are pre-ban). It does seem to me that Linda was trying to conduct another of their studies (term used very, very loosely) on the acquisition of assault weapons."

"Additionally, Linda's actions have been reported to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms."

"Maryann's initial shock suddenly dissipated, leaving outright anger in its place. That someone would DARE approach her that way! That someone would DARE to threaten her! With a rope! Her anger was overwhelming, and gave her strength. She pulled her right arm up, took a good firing stance, brought her left arm up to grasp the little Ruger in a good two-handed hold that lined up the gun sights right in the middle of his chest. The giant who was threatening her suddenly became a big, close target that she'd have no trouble hitting."

"She gave him a good view of the business end of her revolver as her anger poured out of her in the words she shrieked. She called him something unprintable, followed by, 'If you want to play, we'll play with this!' "

"The giant hadn't anticipated this change in his game plan. Instead of the bondage games he'd had in mind, he suddenly had to decide between living and dying. It's not a choice that takes long to make. The rope dropped to the ground almost as quickly as his jaw dropped into an expression of utter surprise. His hands went up, and he started backing away. The giant was getting smaller and smaller with every step."

"As he backed away from Maryann, away from his rope, away from his intentions to harm her, and, hopefully, away from his image of himself as a big, bad dude who could have any 'fun' he wanted with a woman, he started muttering, 'Bitches with guns. Bitches with guns. Bitches with guns.' He kept saying it over and over, as his own surprise gave way to impotent anger, 'Bitches with guns. Bitches with guns.' "

Ohioans for Concealed Carry lists the business on its Web site, www.ofcc.net .

The list includes more than 300 businesses, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.

Child care centers and places serving alcohol are the only businesses required to ban concealed weapons. Other private businesses can choose whether to bar employees and customers from being armed.

"A modern-day example of misguided attempts at controlling perceived problems concerns guns."

"Authorities have long worried about semi-automatic weapons. Most laws concerning them have centered on b*llshit cosmetic changes like barring the inclusion of bayonet lugs (an attachment under the barrel that allows the user to attach a bayonet). Sure, that makes perfect sense because a guy robbing a 7-11 is somehow more dangerous if hes got a bayonet attached to his semi-automatic weapon. Not only can he blow away customers and clerks, he can also wreak havoc on the store inventory by gutting some Twinkies."

"However, a few legislators have, at least half-heartedly, tried to make some meaningful changes to these weapons. For instance, manufacturers cant make weapons with high-capacity magazines (those containing more than 10 bullets). This makes it damn inconvenient for gangsters when they have to blow away more than 10 people. Its downright vexing to have to stop smack dab in the middle of creating carnage."

-------
Of course it's also downright vexing to a potential victim surrounded by multiple attackers to stop and reload while the ones who are still left standing proceed to rob, rape or murder their intended prey.

A French policeman faces trial in a police court for driving under the influence after he was stopped at the wheel of his car drunk and wearing only a pair of fishnet tights, a prosecutor said on Friday.

The man admitted he was a part-time prostitute after fellow police chased him through the Bois de Boulogne, a wooded area on the outskirts of Paris reputed as a nighttime hangout of transsexual prostitutes, in the early hours of Thursday.

The policeman said he needed the extra income. If convicted, he could lose his driver's license and be fined.

Prosecutors said there was not enough evidence to try him for passive soliciting, which is punishable by prison in France.

"The family of a teenager fatally beaten in a 1996 attack that began on the grounds of a New York City school can sue the city for wrongful death, the state's highest court ruled Tuesday."

"An eyewitness to the attack against Julien Balbuena said several teachers and the safety officer at Junior High 302 in Brooklyn saw a gang of about 10 students begin to beat Balbuena outside the school. However, neither the teachers nor the safety officer did anything, even though the eyewitness told them to intervene and the victim was screaming for help, according to the court's ruling."

"Balbuena broke free from his attackers, but they caught up with him about six blocks away and inflicted fatal head injuries."

"The concealed carry law most likely won't mean the return of twitchy-fingered gunslingers yelling 'draw!' at high noon."

"In fact, crime could get wounded with the adoption of the concealed-carry law in the old Midwest. Ohio legislators passed the law in January and it was effective April 8."

"According to FBI Uniform Crime Reports, violent crime rates are highest overall in states that don't have laws or have limited laws that permit carrying concealed firearms for self-defense."

"Hundreds of government officials in Narathiwat province, including teachers, have sought permission to carry guns to protect themselves following a spate of attacks against their colleagues in the South."

"Pramuk Lamul, chief of Narathiwats Muang District, said more than 500 officials have asked for permission to carry guns and the number is still rising."

"He said teachers have requested that police officers and soldiers be deployed to protect them and their students. But they dont want security forces to guard schools all the time, fearing the heightened military presence would encourage insurgents to attack. The teachers suggested the schools be watched by local villagers instead."

"A number of speakers had been personally affected by gun violence, as Vinande has. A woman whose daughter was killed in the Columbine school shooting spoke about her experience. Another woman who had twin sons killed told her story. New York Congresswoman Caroline McCarthy, whose husband Dennis was killed and son Kevin was injured when a lone gunman opened fire on a Long Island Commuter train, told her story. McCarthy has been lobbying for gun control since the incident."

"Those kinds of stories are definitely very emotional... Rather than sitting home, theyre out here trying to help other families. They dont have to be doing this, but they want to help other people not go through this."
