A group of Ann Arbor parents is petitioning the Michigan Legislature to change laws that allow licensed adults to openly carrying guns in schools.

Dr. Sonya Lewis, with support from fellow parents, launched a MoveOn.org petition on April 23 aimed at the House Judiciary Committee.

The committee is reviewing House Bill 4261, which would close what Lewis calls the "open carry loophole."

"The bill fits in with our vision of how things should be," Lewis said. "This is a common sense measure."

State Rep. Andy Schor, D-East Lansing, introduced the bill in February, and it remains in committee.

A bullet struck Zimmerman's driver's-side window, and he was hit by glass and other debris, said his attorney, Don West.

"His injuries would be considered minor," West said. "The bullet missed his head. I think it broke a window and lodged in his vehicle."

Authorities said Zimmerman did not return fire. He flagged down a local officer about the same time Apperson called 911, authorities said in a news conference on Monday.

This is old news for some but begs additional discussion.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, based in Chicago, has upheld a lower court ruling that an Illinois communitys ordinance banning possession of assault weapons, and high-capacity magazines is not a violation of the Second Amendment rights of their citizens.

Mooney said the bill would remove statutory burdens on law-abiding gun owners and improve the legal firearm purchase process for active-duty military and law-abiding citizens.

As a staunch supporter and defender of the Second Amendment, I'm committed to eliminating the archaic red tape burdening gun owners who legally purchase firearms across the nation, Scalise said. For decades now, our gun laws have made it harder and more costly to legally purchase guns in other states and then safely bring them home. I'm proud to introduce this legislation with my friend and colleague Rep. Alex Mooney in order to remove these burdensome and unnecessary restrictions so we can bring firearm laws into the 21st Century.

A retired Navy veteran in Arizona whose gun collection had been seized by Glendale police now has his firearms back, the Second Amendment Foundation revealed today.

SAF had intervened in the case of Glendale resident Rick Bailey early last month, taking on funding of the case and working with Chandler, Ariz., attorney Marc J. Victor. Baileys case had fired up Second Amendment activists across the country after police confiscated 28 firearms valued at more than $25,000, which Bailey had collected over more than a decade.

Bailey was generous in his praise of SAFs intervention, noting, I want to thank Alan Gottlieb and the Second Amendment Foundation for all the help in getting my firearms returned.

Today I obtained a further filing in the suit, a "Memorandum of Points and Authorities in Support of Plaintiffs' Motion for Preliminary Injunction." Below, a summation of the interesting arguments in it.

It begins by pointing out that the ITAR regulations scope and vagueness leaves many citizens, in addition to apparently the State Department itself, in the dark as to whether a given action or product violates ITAR by being "exported" and the "commodity jurisdiction" requests that citizens must go through to find out if they are subject to it are not treated in any efficient or swift manner.

Firearm collectors may soon be able to get their hands on vintage 1911 pistols through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), thanks to an amendment to the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Sponsored by US Representative Mike Rogers (R-Alabama), the amendment would allow the US Army to transfer its stock of 100,000 surplus M1911A1 handguns to the CMP, allowing the firearms to be inspected, processed, and eventually prepared for sale through the program. According to AL.com, the NDAA recently passed out of the House Armed Services Committee and will be up for consideration by the rest of the House later this month.

NJ: How New Jersey's Smart Gun Law Backfired

Many Second Amendment advocates view smart guns as a step toward draconian restrictions on firearm ownership. Raymond, a passionate gun advocate, wasn't willing to risk his life for a few sales and decided to strip his shelves of smart guns. Fearing similar pushback, if not necessarily death threats, other retailers have likewise steered clear of smart guns. No major U.S. arms manufacturers are offering the weapons.

The current smart-gun scarcity can be traced, in part, to the enactment 13 years ago of a New Jersey statute intended to promote high-tech handguns.

Advocates and lawmakers are opening what they call the second front in the battle to preserve Second Amendment rights focusing not on guns, yet knives. While once overshadowed by the hot-button gun debate, local, state and federal laws restricting knife sales and possession have gained more attention in recent years of time most recently in Baltimore, where obscure knife laws have surfaced at the center of the Freddie Gray death case.

Once again Paul McQuillen (May 6 Another Voice) is spouting his anti-gun opinions, and expecting the reader to regard them as facts. He gives absolutely no data to back up his statements. He criticizes Rep. Chris Collins for extending Second Amendment rights to include New York State.

The legislation he is co-sponsoring is similar to the law that allows out-of-state drivers to enter the state legally because their home-state drivers license is good in all states. Those who are caught driving without a license are arrested and face the penalties for doing so. Only those who have proved that they are responsible and legally permitted to drive a car can enter the state as a driver. There is no constitutional right to keep and drive cars.

Those infringements include "the right to share a firearm for self-defense, the right to teach and learn hands-on firearm safety, the right to the return of a loaned firearm, and the right to take possession of a firearm when already licensed to do so by the State," the complaint said.

U.S. District Judge Benjamin Settle on May 7 granted Attorney General Bob Ferguson's motion to dismiss. Settle said the plaintiffs did not show a real threat of prosecution regarding the gun law's transfer provision.

A newly expanded version of the National Rifle Association's flagship magazine has already featured racist and sexist content, a claim that gun owners are the victim of "institutionalized discrimination," and other inflammatory commentary.

In recent weeks, the NRA has rebranded its magazine America's 1st Freedom. While the magazine was previously available in a print and digital format, a newly-launched website has more content, including "F1rst Things First" ("The Daily Threat Assessment for Your Firearm Freedoms"), features by a wide range of NRA writers and outside contributors, and material from the NRA's lifestyle magazine NRA Sharp and the NRA News commentator series.

Sen. Jack Fry, R-Midwest City, author of Senate Bill 41, said he was not sure whether he would launch a veto override attempt.

It would be futile to attempt it if there werent enough votes to begin with, Fry said.

The bill passed the Senate, 39-7, and passed the House, 88-4. But that was before concerns arose in the business community that the bill could jeopardize events that pump millions of dollars into the economy.

As one of our great national leaders once said when repeatedly confronted with specious and insubstantial arguments, There you go again.

We could cite plenty of examples used by proponents of gun control in this regard, but for the moment were talking about the claim that 40 percent of firearms are sold without a background check. Readers may recall that two years ago, FactCheck.org discredited the claim in depth and the Washington Post Fact Checker thereafter gave President Obama Three Pinocchios for using it in a White House speech.
