If you don't pass an in-state background check for a Michigan pistol purchase license, police and prosecutors should be notified, newly introduced legislation argues.
The new bill, introduced Wednesday, May 11, by Rep. Robert Wittenberg, D-Oak Park, would require Michigan licensing agencies to alert law enforcement and prosecuting attorneys on the federal, state, and local levels when a prohibited person applies for a pistol purchase license and fails the state's Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) background check, according to Wittenberg's office.
The result, gun reform advocates hope, will be more violators facing consequences rather than being turned away with no penalty, free to seek a gun through other means. |

During the height of the Great Recession wasnt a typical time for a business to see expansion. But thats exactly what Canton resident Jeff Felts decided to do.
His business, Center Mass, began 20 years ago in his homes basement. Today, the retired Wayne police officer operates the law enforcement products and gun shop out of a storefront in Livonia and has 30 employees.
In addition to operating the business, Felts is the chairman of the National Patrol Rifle Conference, an annual event held for hundreds of law enforcement officials across the country. This years event will take place June 4 and 5 in Oakland County. |

Guns are ubiquitous in Detroits 8th Precinct among criminals as well as citizens who fear them, with firearms meant for protection sometimes becoming instruments of tragedy.
The latest victim is 5-year-old Mariah Davis, who fatally shot herself in the throat just after midnight Wednesday after finding her grandmothers Colt .38 revolver under a pillow.
Firearms instructor Rick Ector agreed. If youre a firearm owner, you absolutely have the responsibility to keep them away from unauthorized users, and that includes children, said Ector, of Ricks Firearm Academy in Detroit.
Gun owners need to be responsible, Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt said. People must think it wont happen to me until it happens to them. |

"This is a piece of American History," Zimmerman says in the post, which has not been verified by NBC News.
The firearm is listed as a 9 mm Kel-Tec PF-9 pistol, and goes on sale Thursday morning with bidding starting at $5,000. |

A North Carolina school board decided on Tuesday that students should be allowed to carry defensive sprays and razors with one member suggesting they might need these tools in light of HB2, the controversial state law that requires students using bathrooms in public schools to use bathrooms according to the sex on their birth certificate.
Depending on how the courts rule on the bathroom issues, it may be a pretty valuable tool to have on the female students if they go to the bathroom, not knowing who may come in, school board member Chuck Hughes said, according to the Salisbury Post. |

A House-passed bill that would prohibit the enforcement of certain federal gun laws is headed to the Senate floor but its detractors could keep the legislation from being passed before next months adjournment.
The Second Amendment Preservation Act would ban the state enforcement of any federal law or regulation which goes into effect after last year that limits the right of a person to own, possess or use a firearm, ammunition or accessory.
The bill also would prohibit accepting any federal funds for the enforcement of such laws or spending state funds on enforcement of any federal law or regulation which goes into effect after last year requiring the registration or confiscation of firearms. |

Self-defense handgun ammunition is quite like a fire extinguisher: When you need it, you really need it, and you need it to work well. And furthermore, a discount fire extinguisher doesnt quite cut the mustard. You need the bullet that will perform best in your handgun and possesses the qualities you can count on. We need a bullet that will neutralize a threat to life and limb; one that is accurate; one that will expand reliably and will penetrate enough to quell a very dangerous situation yet not over-penetrate and risk harming an unintended target. Not all handgun bullets can fit the bill, but Ive found a few that will. Lets take a look at them. |

Missori[sic] Senate Bill 656 and House Bill 1468 do one thing: they recognize the most basic of human rights, the right to be armed to defend your life, the life of your loved ones, and other souls you would risk your own life to defend.
Billionaire Michael Bloombergs current favorite anti-gun vanity project, Moms Demand Action, is not pleased about the state being on the cusp of joining a sudden flood of states returning to permitless or Constitutional carry.
Theyve set forth their local public relations figurehead, Becky Morgan, to sell fear. |

The Law Commissions recommendations include:
* Continued education to support an improved understanding of family violence among judges, lawyers, and Police.
* Reforms to the Crimes Act 1961 and Evidence Act 2006 to improve the accessibility of self-defence to victims of family violence.
* Reforms to the Sentencing Act 2002 to promote consistent consideration of a history of family violence as a mitigating factor in sentencing.
* That the Ministry of Justice consider how the three strikes legislation applies to victims of family violence who commit homicide and how it could be amended to allow judges to impose a sentence other than life imprisonment in deserving cases. |

U.S. District Judge Catherine Blake upheld the ban, but a divided three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. CircuitCourt of Appeals ruled in February that she did not apply the proper legal standard. The panel sent the case back to Blake and ordered her to apply strict scrutiny, a more rigorous test of a laws constitutionality. The state appealed to the full appeals court.
John Parker Sweeney, an attorney for the gun rights advocates who challenged the ban, argued that lawmakers went too far. |

The resolution was supporting pending General Assembly companion bills, H-7243 and S-2761, which cite a study by the Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C., that found nationwide not necessarily in schools there were 722 deaths in 544 concealed-carry shootings from May 2007 to February 2015. Just 16 of the killings were deemed to be lawful self-defense. |

University of Texas System regents are expected Thursday to approve rules allowing concealed handguns in campus classrooms and buildings.
The rules are mandated by a state law that takes effect Aug. 1.
The most controversial rules have been at the flagship Austin campus, which would allow concealed handgun license holders to carry their weapons into classrooms but not dormitories. They must have their guns holstered and may not keep a bullet in the chamber of a semi-automatic weapon. |

The National Rifle Association today admonished out-of-state gun-control groups funded by anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg for waging a misinformation campaign designed to fool Missourians and trick legislators into restricting law-abiding citizens constitutional right to self-defense.
Michael Bloombergs out-of-state gun control group, Everytown for Gun Safety, is running a false and misleading ad designed to scare citizens. The facts are not on their side, so they must use fear tactics and outlandish claims to further their gun control agenda, said NRA spokesman Lars Dalseide. |
