Gun-control is extremist rhetoric and murderously dangerous. Look at the facts and it seems gun-control Democrats really want more of us to die.

This is what happens when we're disarmed.

Police are investigating whether a gunfight that left a 17-year-old boy dead and another person injured Thursday night was a justifiable homicide.

Gilbert Gallegos, an Albuquerque police spokesman, said detectives are working to determine whether the man who was injured fatally shot Santiago Garcia in self-defense.

The investigation is on-going, he said.

New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against a gun accessory manufacturer on Thursday, alleging that the business facilitated the illegal possession of weapons in the state.

The lawsuit (pdf) has been filed against Georgia-based Mean Arms for allegedly aiding in the illegal possession of assault weapons in New York, including the weapon used in the Buffalo mass shooting in May last year, according to a May 11 press release. The shooting incident in Buffalo ended up killing 10 people and injuring three.

The shooter is said to have purchased a used semiautomatic AR-15 rifle a few months before the incident in January 2022. The AR-15 had a magazine lock (MA lock) installed, which was manufactured by Mean Arms.

Two long-proposed gun law changes moved toward final approval Friday as part of a public safety budget package that majority Democrats expected to have to muscle through without Republican support.

The Senate passed the bill Friday night after a long debate and sent it to the House for a final vote there. The Senate vote was 34-33, with all Democrats voting in favor and all Republicans against.

The pair of gun restrictions expanding background checks to more sales and allowing for temporary removal of guns from people in crisis faced opposition from Senate Republicans and raised doubts about whether the bill would get the support of every Senate Democrat.

For my civics class, we were told to choose an injustice and say how we will try and solve it. The injustice I chose to use is Washington states strict gun laws. Namely, the two new bills that were recently passed by the Washington state legislature.

One is a bill that would make the selling, distributing, purchasing or manufacturing of magazines with more than 10 rounds of ammunition a gross misdemeanor. The penalty for a gross misdemeanor in Washington state is up to 364 days of jail time and/or fines up to $5,000.

The second is a bill that bans the sale, importation and distribution of assault-style rifles, one of the highest-profile firearms-regulation bills in the nation, signed by Gov. Jay Inslee on April 25.

Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Bambang Soesatyo has said that special regulations are needed for civilians holding self-defense weapon permits.

"There is still often confusion and multi-interpretation, both from the police and civilian weapon owners about when they can use their firearms," Soesatyo said here on Saturday.

According to him, the multiple interpretations regarding the use of permitted firearms by civilian owners have resulted in their criminalization.

Interspersed among mass shootings in Texas and elsewhere, descriptions have emerged from prosecutors of the alleged Massachusetts National Guard intelligence leaker, Jack Teixeira. He is reported to have participated in a pestilential online gun culture, replete with tasteless japing about mass shootings.

When Democrats have drummed up the votes to disarm Americans or significantly impede their ability to buy guns, text me. But we live in a society where speech is also free, including freedom to organize campaigns against a pernicious strain in the mass-shooter phenomenon.

Earlier this week, a man in Louisiana shot a 14-year-old girl who was playing hide and seek on his property in the head. According to ABC News, the 58-year-old neighbor saw shadows outside his home and went to retrieve his gun. When he came back outside, the local sheriffs office said he saw people running away from his property, at which time he began shooting at them and unknowingly hit the girl. (Luckily, the girl lived, and was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries; the man was charged with aggravated assault and battery and the illegal discharge of a firearm.)

Not so with the recent death on a New York City subway car of one Jordan Neely at the hands of a white Marine Corps veteran and fellow New Yorker named Daniel Penny. Neely, 30, was an inarguably sick and dangerous man, the subject of multiple Emotionally Disturbed Person reports and more than 40 arrests.

Just prior to his death, according to one eyewitness, Neely was ranting and raving and menacing: He said, 'I dont care. Ill take a bullet, Ill go to jail because he would kill people on the train, the woman said of Neely. He said, I would kill a motherf***er. I dont care. Ill take a bullet. Ill go to jail.

Here is what the study found: Stand-your-ground laws were associated with no change to small increases in violent crime (total and firearm homicide, aggravated assault, robbery) on average across states. Florida-based studies showed robust increases (24% to 45%) in firearm and total homicide while self-defense claims under stand-your-ground law were more often denied when victims were White, especially when claimants were racial minorities.

A Virginia federal judge has struck down a law banning adults under the age of 21 from purchasing handguns, saying the law violates the Constitution.

U.S. District Court Judge Robert Payne issued a 71-page ruling determining the Constitution does not exclude 18- to 20-year-olds from other constitutional guarantees, such as voting and enlisting in the military.

If the Court were to exclude 18- to-20-year-olds from the Second Amendments protection, it would impose limitations on the Second Amendment that do not exist with other constitutional guarantees, Payne wrote. Because the statutes and regulations in question are not consistent with our Nations history and tradition, they, therefore, cannot stand.

Darrin Bacchus was acquitted of first-degree manslaughter Friday after testifying he acted in self-defense in the fatal April 2022 barbershop shooting.

Bacchus, 26, hugged his attorneys as he heard the court clerk read the verdict.

"There is nothing more tragic than the loss of life. We are just happy that the jury did not choose to compound an already tragic situation by sending someone to prison who was truly innocent of any crime," defense attorney Andrew Casey said. "Our prayers go out to the family of Landon Aufleger and hope that throughout this they can begin to have closure, and at the same time we are immensely happy for Darrin Bacchus and his family."

Often lost in conversations about gun violence is the reality of who is responsible for the bulk of that violence. Most gun crimes arent committed by lawful gun owners but by a small subset of repeat violent offenders who already are prohibited from legally possessing firearms.

At the same time, the vast majority of the nations millions of lawful gun owners will never use their firearms to harm themselves or others (excluding, of course, actions taken in lawful self-defense).

A no compromise gun rights group is suing the Biden administration over part of the bipartisan gun safety law enacted last summer, arguing that the law imposes unconstitutional waiting periods to purchase firearms on young adults under 21.

Gun Owners of America (GOA) on Friday filed a lawsuit in the Northern District of Texas challenging enhanced background check requirements established by the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act last year. The lawsuit names Attorney General Merrick Garland and the FBI as defendants and argues that new requirements for the National Instant Criminal Background Check system to review juvenile records for adults aged 18-20 create a de facto waiting period that violates their Second Amendment rights.

Not too long ago, I watched my favorite Barnes and Nobles in Houston turn into a giant gun store and that change instilled a fear in me that prevents me from stepping outside of my house unless I truly have to. (Collectors Firearms, a museum and gun store moved into the old Barnes and Noble location in Westheimer in Houston in 2021)

We constantly live in a culture of fear and doubt rather than love and compassion. I hope that we can promote mental health awareness and encourage talking about issues that may be bothering people so that no one is pushed to the edge to take away Gods greatest gift from themselves or from anyone else.

Pastor Isaiah Stewart long ago lost count of the number of funerals hes presided over as he has sought to bring comfort to a city stricken by a cycle of gun violence that seems never-ending.

Just when you think its hit this level of bad, really bad, somehow it gets worse, Stewart said on a recent afternoon. You pray to find the words, but sometimes its hard to know what to say anymore.

The next morning, Stewart would officiate at a memorial for a 19-year-old teenager who had been shot and killed, another victim of the so-called street justice that has unnerved residents of this storied Southern city and led elected officials to call what is happening here a public health crisis.

On the eve of a harrowing anniversary, the racially motivated terrorist attack at a supermarket in Buffalo, the debate around guns in our communities rages on.

The sound of a gun strikes people different ways. Many have grown numb while others are traumatized. At a remote range one group is trying to normalize it.

"I saw an opportunity to come back and assist my community with getting more involved in the Second Amendment," said Joseph Wooley. "Not looking at firearms as being bad."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. Thomas Jefferson, quoting Cesare Beccaria in On Crimes and punishment (1764).
