"Having had time to think more on this, some other thoughts now occur to me. First, the shame is not on gun owners, it is on the people stooping to insults and crudities. I refuse to feel shame for some obnoxious troll's many character defects. And why engage with someone essentially screaming insults? You would ignore and put distance between yourself and someone doing that in the real world (keeping the option of defending yourself open if need be), so why not practice the same prudent discipline in the virtual one?" |

After the nation was shaken by the massacre of schoolchildren at Sandy Hook Elementary, the NRA showed their hand on the simple proposition of expanding background checks to all gun sales.
Though 90 percent of the nation even those voters in Red States -- favored the plan to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, NRA pressure led Senate Republicans to block the bipartisan measure. |

A new Village of Northbrook work rule has drawn applause from a local gun control advocate and brickbats from a state gun-rights group.
The rule forbids village employees and contractors from carrying guns or other weapons on village property or on private property, while on the job.
As I read it, its about as broad a policy as they could have written, Lee Goodman, who fought Illinois new concealed carry law, said May 15. Im thrilled with it.
...
It goes too far, said Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, the local arm of the National Rifle Association. |

Just hours before adjournment, the Missouri General Assembly has approved a bill that lowers the states legal age for carrying concealed weapons to 19 and allows the open carrying of firearms by any person with a valid concealed-carry permit.
The bill also allows schools to designate teachers or administrators as "school protection officers" who can carry a concealed firearm or self-defense spray device. But school districts authorizing the armed officers are required to hold a public hearing on the matter. |

Dave Workman, spokesman for the Second Amendment Foundation, wrote in a column for thegunmag.com that the councils resolution was probably legal.
"Had Tacoma tried to extend the background check requirement to gun shows held on private property anywhere in the city, there might have been a strong case against the action, as a violation of the preemption law. Federal law currently stipulates that private transfers are not subject to background checks"[, Workman stated.]
In a recent interview, Workman said: Im not sure if (the councils decision) would run afoul of the state preemption law. If its challenged in court we are certainly going to find that out. |

While reading this lengthy but important Mother Jones article about a subset of deeply devout gun nuts who not coincidentally also happen to be easily provoked misogynists, I found myself thinking about that scene in the show. And not just because of the phallic symbol thing. Its because the lack of tool-ness for this beloved tool of gun nuts is, I think, part of what is slowly driving them mad. Guns are like that dildo sitting in a box: They exist for no other purpose than to know you have one. Which is fundamentally silly, and much of the posturing and freaking out is, I suspect, an effort to live in denial of realizing how silly it is to be a gun nut. |

Sheriff Bill Gore officially asked the U.S 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to let California Attorney Gen. Kamala Harris intervene in the Peruta case.
This will place Gore on the sidelines of the case that he was originally named as the defendant to in his official capacity as San Diego County Sheriff.
He maintains that the case, in which a three-judge panel found in February that his departments strict may-issue policies on concealed carry permits were unconstitutional, effects the entire state, not just his county, and therefore Harris should now be allowed to enter to defend the may-issue standard. |

Dudley Brown and his National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) have built a reputation by attacking every other major gun rights organization and even pro-gun politicians, to the detriment of the gun rights movement. His rhetoric has done more to marginalize Second Amendment activism than all of the slanders from gun prohibition lobbying groups combined. Now Dudley has spewed his venom toward Alan Gottlieb, a true champion of Second Amendment advocacy with a proven track record of accomplishment. Gottlieb is founder and executive vice president of the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), and chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA). |

It didnt take long for the media to start dousing Colion Noirs new web series, eponymously titled Noir, with hate.
For those who have yet to view the first episode, Noir is a show geared toward young people that discusses the latest on firearms, fashion, pop culture and other hot topics, according to Noir, the self-proclaimed urban gun enthusiast and National Rifle Association commentator.
In one blistering review by the libertarian-leaning Reason.com, Elizabeth Nolan Brown wrote that the overall effect suggests the show was written by a bot exclusively pulling from the Washington Free Beacon and Perez Hilton. |

Borg, an Eagle Scout, has taken classes in gun safety and marksmanship, some of them through the Boy Scouts.
Borg suggested to Paulsen that the school policy allow clothing with guns or other weapons on them if the message promotes a legitimate use of the weapon or is from a legitimate organization, such as a gun club or the military. Borg agreed that symbols or pictures should not be allowed if they suggest violence or harming somebody.
The policy should be a bit more clear, Borg said, but still be open for some interpretation.
I wasnt trying to push buttons or be provocative, he said.
Borg said he may wear the shirt again on Monday. |

Nearly 200 years after Eliphalet Remington II forged his first rifle in Ilion, residents of the small central New York village are getting the bad news they have feared for more than a year: Remington Arms is moving production of two of its gun lines to Alabama.
While the company did not announce the outright closing of the facility that has been home to Remington since 1816, gun rights advocates said that day is now likely moving closer and they blame the states 2013 NY SAFE Act gun control law.
This could very well be the beginning of the end of Ilion, said Tom King, president of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, the state chapter for the National Rifle Association. |

The great myth the right has pushed for decades is that people need guns for personal safety, to protect against home intruders who are bent on raping and murdering them. Its hard to deny the right to self-defense, but the tactic is fundamentally dishonest because having a gun in the home significantly raises the likelihood youre going to be murdered. But no longer content simply to lie to people about guns, right-wing media has upped the ante, now arguing that a little pre-emptive murder of teenagers who are not actually out to murder you is good for overall safety and security. |

They may not have been able to stop the Democrat-controlled General Assembly and governor from implementing stricter gun control laws in 2013, but Second Amendment advocates are staying involved in the political process.
The Connecticut Citizens Defense League encouraged its members to get involved with the political process so they can support candidates that share their view of the Second Amendment. Part of that process included an effort to get their members into mix of 1,253 delegates to the Republican convention this weekend. |

In an answer to the case known as Heller II, a federal judge dismissed the challenges to the District of Columbias harsh gun registration laws on May 15.
In this most recent installment in the debate over the interpretation of the Second Amendment in the nations capital, U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg concluded that the Districts strict set of laws is valid and in line with the Constitution.
The people of this city, acting through their elected representatives, have sought to combat gun violence and promote public safety, Boasberg wrote in his decision. The Court finds that they have done so in a constitutionally permissible manner. |

Gov. Mary Fallins temper tantrum, as it was dubbed last week by State Rep. Mike Brown, embarrassed members of her own party, and for good reason. If voters are savvy enough to understand the retaliatory nature of the vetoes she let fly, she may have blasted a hole in her own foot.
According to observers, Fallins hissy-fit stemmed from the Legislatures refusal to pass her bill to establish charter schools, possibly in every county. Last month, she brought in Jeb Bush to bolster her agenda, and both played to the media at a successful charter school in Oklahoma City. |

Senate Bill 338 modernizes access to concealed carry licenses while adding common sense safeguards that protect all Ohioans.
Specifically, the legislation allows non-Ohio residents, upon completion of requirements, to receive a concealed handgun license if they are employed in the state. It also exempts any applicant who has successfully completed the Ohio Peace Officer Training or the annual firearms requalification training program from the competency certification requirement to receive a permit. |

On Wednesday, a shelf at the back of the Gander Mountain store in Moon displayed an abundant supply of ammunition for handguns and rifles. That was a big change from several months ago, when a nationwide ammunition shortage left the shelf barren.
"There probably wouldn't be a whole lot for you to buy" back then, said Tom Ferry, the store's hunting manager.
Pittsburgh's sporting goods stores are recovering from an ammunition shortage that forced them to ration some bullets in the past year. Most types of ammunition are readily available now, employees said, although some, such as .22 long rifle bullets, remain scarce. |
