Earlier this month, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence brought 150 school children from the Bronx and Harlem to Albany to recite poetry, sing songs, and perform skits about the impact gun violence has on their daily lives.
They didn't get the warmest of welcomes. Kicked out of the space they had booked - the very public well of the legislative office building - they were forced into a hearing room. They were replaced in the well by a wine tasting. |

Gun-ban advocates like to say that good guys never use guns to stop criminals. Shannon Watts of the Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand group said just that last year in a CNN interview. When asked whether there was any truth to the assertion that the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, Watts responded: This has never happened. Data shows it doesnt happen.
Watts and other anti-gunners prefer a person who is under attack to dial 911 and take his or her chanceseven though, as the old saying goes, When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. Thats no knock on our brave men and women in law enforcement. Of course they cant be everywhere all the timethats physically impossible.

Thirty-second sound bites. Instant coffee. On-demand streaming.
We live in an instant gratification society, and this mentality tends to spill over into political activism.
Most people involved in the political process seem want immediate solutions to every problem. They expect legislation to pass on the first try, and if it fails, they either give up or lash out. And half-measures dont cut it. They want the whole loaf of bread. A single slice wont do.
They miss the fact that a bunch of slices form a loaf. |

They came for the thrill of it, for the chance to hold power in their hands, for a unique but costly few minutes of fun.
More than 100 people attended Machine Gun Mania this weekend at the Frisco Gun Club, where they bit the $75 bullet for a rare chance to shoot fully loaded automatic rifles. The weapons, which shoot rapid fire while the trigger is pressed, are generally reserved for military use and cannot be bought by civilians.
Brandon Johnson, vice president of sales and marketing for the club, described it as a novelty similar to going bungee jumping or skydiving. A rush of pure adrenaline, he said. People have the biggest grins youve ever seen when they walk off the range. |

As a longtime NRA Certified Handgun Instructor, I preach front sight focus almost as much as I do a smooth press and surprise break of the trigger. These are the things that have the greatest impact on accurate, effective shooting, in my experience. The front sight must be the center of visual attention because the human eye is capable of truly focusing on only one object at a time (a particular distance from the eye). In the case of handgun shooting, proper front sight focus should render both the target and rear sight at least slightly blurry. |

Rachel Thomas is busy blowing big holes through the center of a paper target with her .45-caliber handgun.
Standing just next door at the Siddens Indoor Shooting Range & Gunshop in Rochester, Lori Auffenorde isn't doing so well at first with a smaller-caliber weapon. Her shots drift a little low and to the left. This prompts experienced shooters such as Thomas, Jennifer Lelys and Lori Sanner to gather round and offer lots of advice. |

This legislative session opened looking like it would be the most firearms-friendly in years.
Republican Rep. Larry Phillips open carry bill will be considered Monday morning by the Senate State Affairs Committee.
Considering the Senate has already passed its own bill allowing so-called open carry, the Houses proposal suggests guns are poised to move back to the top of Texas lawmakers agendas. Phillips measure would allow licensed gun owners the right to open carry in most public places, sans businesses that have rules against it. |

Reading the May 13 news article "Supporters tout gun-control bills," I was astonished that House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello so callously dismissed the citizens in the news conference who were supporting common-sense gun legislation. He said, I want a bold, aggressive, pro-business budget. It takes a lot of work, a lot of time, and those types of controversial issues just suck all the oxygen out of the room." Understandably, Rhode Island must focus on economics, but there is a dollar cost to gun violence that Rhode Island cannot afford.

A law-abiding Texan can buy a gun in the Lone Star State with no problem. Likewise, a law-abiding Arkansan can legally purchase a firearm in Arkansas. Why, then, cant a Texanwho can pass a background checkbuy a handgun in Arkansas, or vice versa?
The answer is because a complicated web of red tape has bound up so much of our right to keep and bear arms over the past several decades. And this red tape is one of the major motivating factors behind the drafting of the Firearms Interstate Commerce Reform Act, a federal bill sponsored by House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Rep. Alex Mooney (R-W.V.). |

While most Evergreen Staters will be observing the 35th anniversary of the devastating Mount St. Helens eruption Monday, some people are talking about something else happening later this week in Spokane, a closed-door meeting of the expanded wolf advisory group, and theyre wondering why.
And on Friday, MyNorthwest published a report about a recent wolf sighting and the death of a female gray wolf along I-90 east of North Bend. That incident was quickly followed by the publication of an apparent wolf photo, captured by a trail cam in the farmland just west of the base of Mount Si between North Bend and Snoqualmie. |

The sky was ablaze over Harrisonville Saturday night. Lightning flashed across the sky with the same fury as the thousands of shells from Dave Millers shotguns.
Miller, a Grain Valley resident, set a Guinness World Record for most clay targets hit in an hour, with 3,653, more than one target per second.
This is absolutely the biggest shooting achievement Ive ever made, Miller said. I dont even know what to say. |

Monday morning, the Senate State Affairs Committee will consider Sherman Republican Rep. Larry Phillips' bill allowing licensed Texans to openly carry handguns, holstered on their hips or otherwise in plain sight. The legislative session opened looking like it would be the most firearms-friendly in years, but gun rights have been overshadowed by other issues of late. The Senate has already passed its own bill allowing so-called "open carry," but it considering the House's proposal suggests guns are poised to move back to the top of lawmakers' agendas. |

SignCo Brisbanes ad depicted Winnie the Pooh aiming the gun whilst fellow characters Kanga and Piglett watch.
Complaints to the ASB said that Given the circumstances around the world lately I find it highly offensive, and the poster has used an innocent childrens cartoon to depict violence (not to mention a criminal act) on another being. The watchdog said the cartoon did not soften the violent nature of the image.
The Board noted that the use of guns in advertising pointing at another person or character is generally considered an act of violence and that the animated nature of this image does not lessen the impact of the overall theme, the ruling said. |

The Peaceful, Responsible Owners of Guns (ProGun) urged the 1.7 million licensed gun owners and their families not to vote for any candidates, particularly from the Liberal Party, who will be endorsed by President Benigno Aquino 3rd.
According to the group, Republic Act 10591 which was implemented by the Aquino administration increased the number of loose firearms because hundreds of thousands of registered gun owners did not renew their licenses deliberately in protest of the governments anti-gun policies.
"During his term Shooter Pnoy Aquino has practically destroyed the entire firearms industry and sports." |
