More Schools Arm School Staff

School districts in three more states announced that they would arm school staff.

The map keeps changing as more and more districts adopt a policy to allow some of their teachers and staff to go armed on campus. That is significant given the legal and cultural biases at work against them. Arming teachers is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the many actions we've taken to make our schools safer. We've changed how we protect our students as well as what we do.
Here is some of the recent evidence.

Texas prosecutors who have failed to convict a single person in the three years since a Waco shooting left nine bikers dead are trying a new tack of targeting fewer cases, but attorneys for the bikers say the evidence is so shaky and the lead prosecutor's credibility so damaged that it will be difficult to make the remaining charges stick.

The child refused and started to walk away, but Milling allegedly followed and snatched away money that the child had made selling candy.

The child returned home and told his mother what happened.

When the mother walked up to Milling to confront him, Milling then pulled out a handgun and opened fire, according to the Shreveport Police Department.

The mother, who was also armed with a handgun, returned fire as Milling ran away.

The woman told police that she acted in self defense, and no one was injured in the exchange.

Lauren Hartnett wants to protect herself.

At 19 years old, she went through an abusive relationship. It was then, she says, when she began thinking about how owning a gun might make her safer.

This is the ultimate form of feminism, Hartnett tells NationSwell. In the era of #MeToo, she says, taking self-defense classes have never seemed so important or, for that matter, topical. Nobody is in control of you but yourself.

The NRA is kind of just shy of a terrorist organization, declared Debbie Wasserman Schultz. They have done everything they can to perpetuate the culture of violence that we have in our country with the spread of assault weapons across the nation. She was responding to Oliver North, the NRAs new president, who said recently of gun-controllers, They call them activists. Thats what theyre calling themselves. Theyre not activists this is civil terrorism. He accused them of intimidation and harassment and lawbreaking.

Chalk one up for the good guys. Faculty at Dixon High School in Dixon, Illinois thought theyd heard fireworks yesterday morning, but school resource officer Mark Dallas knew otherwise. He confronted 19-year-old Matthew Milby, who had opened fire in the school, forcing him to flee and eventually hitting him in an exchange of gunfire. The only casualty was the gunman:

I believe, wholeheartedly, that the importance of the right to bear firearms for personal protection cannot be overstated. That being said, guns provide us with certain defensive options but not an all-purpose solution. Even in the most gun-friendly states with shall-issue permits or constitutional carry, there will always be times and places where it is either impractical or illegal to carry a gun. Those who drive long distances for work or recreation are faced with all kinds of regulatory inconsistencies. Some situations may not justify the use of lethal force. And there are also our friends or family who are either unwilling or unable to use guns for defensive applications.

As hip hop artist Maj Toure toured the country, he kept hearing the same stories of African-Americans facing gun charges because they didn't know they were supposed to, for example, have a concealed carry permit.

Those stories and others about convicted felons having gun rights revoked prompted Toure, of Philadephia, to create the grass-roots organization Black Guns Matter and take his message of gun rights and firearms education to African-American communities all over. That includes Chicago, where hes spending a month doing outreach and a training session this weekend.

A logical and sensible solution in the gun debate

In fact there are four points that both sides of the debate actually believe in. These are; 1) the right to self-defense, 2) the right to hunt, 3) universal background checks for all firearm sales and transfers, 4) that those who are felons and those who have a mental illness that make them a danger to themselves or others should not have the right to own a firearm. Here is the beginning of a possible solution, with just one more hurdle to overcome. That is the idea of assault weapons.

Ed.: Um, no. Speak for yourself. You cannot treat the right to keep and bear arms as a government privilege and still credibly 'support the Second Amendment'.

The five leading Republican candidates for Georgia governor tried to separate themselves from the field during a debate Thursday, making an appeal to conservative voters on gun rights and illegal immigration.

With Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle leading in the polls, the rest of the candidates might be racing for second place in Tuesdays primary. If no candidate wins a majority, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff July 24.

Q: Do you favor adjusting the permitting process or eliminating the permitting process?

Cagle: No I think that you have to have a vetting process to ensure that individuals can pass a background check, that do not have a mental illness. Those issues have really been the law of the state. I think its important.

Q: Are there any further expansions of gun rights that you think need to happen?

Cagle: Not in my opinion, no.

Boulder's new ban on so-called assault weapons is already being challenged in court.

The ban - Ordinance 8245 - passed unanimously by the City of Boulder's nine councilors doesn't just ban "assault" weapons in the city, but also bump stocks, large magazines and raises the age to purchase a gun from 18 to 21.

A lawsuit, filed on Thursday, claims the ordinance "violate[s] multiple provisions of the U.S. Constitution including Article VI, the First Amendment, the Second Amendment, the Fifth Amendment and the Fourteenth Amendment."

The Henry County Board on Thursday unanimously opposed state laws that would infringe on Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Board chairman Roger Gradert thanked board member Jacob Waller for bringing the resolution to his attention.

However, Mr. Wallers amendment to the resolution that would have made Henry County a sanctuary county for firearms owners did not appear headed for the same success.

At one point Mr. Waller changed the wording of his amendment, replacing the term sanctuary with constitutional rights protective county.

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it. RONALD REAGAN (1986)
