"The new president of the National Rifle Association lacks the celebrity firepower of Charlton Heston. But Kayne Robinson brings political know-how to the role, along with a police and Marine background and an inside-and-out knowledge of guns dating to his Huck Finn-like childhood." ...

"Robinson was also an NRA vice president for six years."

"A major battle lies ahead for the NRA: The 1994 federal ban on military-style assault weapons will expire next year unless Congress renews it. The gun lobby opposes the ban, but President Bush, in a rare break with the NRA, has said he favors renewing it." ...

" 'That's where I would see him coming in - maintaining a balance between sportsmen, who obviously guns are a tool of their sports, as opposed to people that believe in ownership of guns as an end in itself,' the senator said."

"Despite pleas from Chicago lawmakers, legislation that would limit people to buying one handgun a month failed Friday in the state Senate."

"The measure was aimed at curbing so-called 'straw' purchases, where people buy large numbers of guns legally and then sell them to criminals. About 25 percent of handguns used in crimes trace back to legal purchases."

"A black .380-caliber handgun stolen from the trunk of a car at 19 S. Liberty St. in Elgin April 30 was the same gun used nine days later by a 16-year-old male who fired seven shots at rival gang members at a party at 302 Center St. in Elgin, according to police."

This is why personal responsibility dictates you not leave your firearm sitting around in your trunk.

"Drug crime dominated by gun-toting gangs is the biggest threat to Britain's minorities since the beginnings of mass immigration, a former adviser to the home secretary has warned." ...

"April's gun amnesty saw 40,000 weapons handed in to police."

"But only a tiny minority of the firearms were surrendered in the target areas of Operation Trident, the Police's unit focusing on gun crime blighting black communities."

-------
So police admit that crime is a huge threat to minorities in the UK. Authorities are quite obviously unable to do anything about it. And yet, disarming law abiding citizens, instead of allowing them to fight back in self-defense seems to the Brits a logical step in reducing crime?

"Another problem with central planning is corruption. The 'efficiency' of a centrally planned economy creates thousands of little tin horn dictators, each of which must be absolutely honest at all times and in all things if the system is to be fair. And if your only choice for shoes is the central shoe planning board's director, then you'd better hope he's not funneling your share of shoes off so that his family and friends can be shod in style. And you'd also better hope he's not some freak with a foot fetish-wouldn't it suck to be sexually harassed every time you needed shoes? What if he demands sex for shoes? Our Government knows that if they continue doing the infuriating things they've been doing to us, and intend to continue doing, at some point we will have had enough and shoot the next 'government agent' who comes to our door to usurp our rights or steal our property. It has happened before in this country (see the Revolutionary War with England). Later episodes have been painted as the work of 'extremists' who are 'breaking the law' and they have killed most of them or imprisoned them for a long time for trying to defend themselves and their property. So they are working hard to destroy the concept of personal responsibility and are teaching us to hold innocent third parties liable for criminal acts in their efforts to disarm the entire population of the United States. They're suing innocent gun manufacturers, holding them responsible for the crimes of people who misuse their products. The guns they make are not inherently bad. If they were, police and even government agents would not be buying and carrying them for self defense."

-- Police are struggling to understand how a man was able to assault a convenience store clerk using a weapon not classified as an assault weapon.

Said one local police investigator, "This case has us confused. The security video clearly shows the suspect using a handgun. Despite the fact that the firearm is not an assault weapon, he still managed to assault the victim with it. This is a troubling development, since it may indicate that this weapon is an assault weapon after all." Lawmakers are already rushing to identify the model of the gun used in the assault, so that it can be banned, thus preventing further crimes.

Said Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), "Our biggest concern here is the prevention of crime, and the only way to do that is to take away weapons used in crime. Eventually, these criminals won't have any weapons left, and they will have to use some sort of non-weapon, like maybe they will rob a store with a fish or something. That will be a lot safer. And if that gets to be a problem, we could always enact some sort of assault fish ban."

"I would like to believe gun owners are not 'gun toting, irresponsible people who shoot at anything that moves,' just as I would like to believe that gun control advocates are not 'trying to destroy our constitutional rights and disarm America.' "

"I am simply afraid that legislation disguised as gun control would, in reality, ban all firearms (or make them so difficult to obtain that they are virtually banned). In truth, I wouldn't mind a longer wait as a more thorough background check is performed, and I think that most responsible gun owners/buyers would agree. I think that gun control advocates do not want firearms banned, only more responsible precautions taken to reduce the instances of violence that could have been averted by a complete and thorough background check and licensing procedure."

"Unfortunately, we are each so afraid of the other that we refuse to meet in the middle to develop an effective solution, and the opinion of one person is drowned out by screamed epithets."

The first part is correct. But beware the soothing snake oil of compromise that he is trying to sell. When a burglar comes into you home, do you compromise and allow him to take half your heirloom silver?

"Meeker County Attorney Mike Thompson couldn't believe his eyes when he began researching the new Minnesota law that makes it easier to carry a handgun."

"As Thompson interpreted the law, some of the larger number of people who are expected to carry the weapons could conceivably bring them into city halls and county courthouses."

-------
Oh horror of horrors! A law-abiding citizen can actually walk into a government building armed! What is it that makes this bed-wetting coward so nervous about having peaceable citizens walk around government buildings armed?

"A Detroit bus driver told me that most drivers carried handguns. They figured they needed guns because there was always a chance -- a good chance -- that their passengers would be armed."

"I admired the drivers for their determination to maintain law and order west of the Detroit River. But they weren't cops. They hadn't been trained to handle violent situations. And it always seemed to me that asking an amateur to handle an out-of-control armed person is like asking an amateur to perform brain surgery. It's likely to lead to problems."

"The buzz at the grocery store, the health club and the restaurants in my suburban area is how in less than one month it will be much easier for Minnesotans to carry a concealed handgun. Parents, business owners, city and county elected officials and neighbors have asked me time and time again over the past few weeks why do we need a law to have more guns in Minnesota? My answer is that we don't need this law, and that's why I have authored a bill to repeal it."

"Those seeking an explanation for Utah's strong ties to the Republican Party don't have to look far. Ask Utahns why, and they'll point out that the state is smack-dab in the middle of the Rocky Mountain West, the most conservative region in the country."

"And then they'll reluctantly mention the influence of 'the church,' the one that settled Utah 150 years ago and accounts for about 70 percent of the state's 2.3 million residents. Utahns bristle at having their every move attributed to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, better known as the Mormons, but in this case, the link is hard to escape."
