Murderers kill our kids at school for simple reasons. Mass murder of innocents gives the murderer a powerful reward. Yes, murder pays.

We are not coming anywhere close to best practice in our effort to stop these horrific events. Here is what we can do. (1000 words)

A state judge acquitted a man charged with manslaughter for a fatal shooting in a Gentilly townhouse after a one-day trial on Thursday.

Criminal District Court Judge Benedict Willard sided with Henry Wilson, who said that he shot in self defense after 26-year-old Billy Dukes pulled a gun on him in January 2016.

Wilson, a former bartender at Brennans Restaurant who now works at two other restaurants, was overcome with emotion after the verdict, said his defense attorney, Kevin Boshea.

The Lone Star state has some of the most gun-friendly laws across the USA, including the right to openly carry handguns for law-abiding residents 18 and older who have taken a safety course and obtained a permit.

The training may be done online or in person through a licensed instructor, according to Texas law.

Openly carrying shotguns and rifles has long been legal in Texas, except in places where it is expressly forbidden. State and federal laws designate school properties in Texas as gun-free zones, but the laws also allow for some exceptions.

When Morris woke up, police were told that he began exhibiting what witnesses describe as a " fit of rage" and started yelling at his fiance's son.

The man eventually identified as the shooter told police he heard the disturbance and armed himself.

Police were told that Morris then directed his rage at him, grabbed a ceramic lamp and told the man he was going to kill him.

At that point, the man tried to leave the house, but police say Morris followed him outside with the lamp and chased him.

Even when faced with the weapon, Morris is reported to have charged with the lamp, at which time the armed man fired several shots in what a police statement called self defense.

A trail of blood led police to a man suspected of robbing two people in Chandler, officials said.

Around 9:30 p.m., Chandler police contacted two victims who said they were robbed at gunpoint, in the area of Wildhorse Road and Wagon Wheel Drive near Pecos and McQueen Roads, said Detective Seth Tyler, a spokesman for the Chandler Police Department.

One of the two victims said he fired at least one shot at the suspect in self-defense, Tyler said.

Officers discovered a trail of blood and followed it to a home in the 1100 block of South Bridger Drive, less than a mile from the incident, Tyler said.

A Casper resident told Casper City Council on Tuesday that people have the constitutional right to carry guns in meetings just like they do in Cheyenne.

A Cheyenne city attorney said the two cities aren't comparable.

And a Casper City Council member, who also is a retired judge, responded that the ban here isn't unconstitutional and guns in meetings aren't a good idea regardless what happens in Cheyenne.

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. Charles Dickens probably never thought of a shooting as the best of times, nor would anyone else. However, if you HAVE to have a shooting, then the obvious best of times is one where only the gunman dies. Unfortunately that isnt always the case.

Today we had yet another, preventable shooting at a soft-target school, where the best defense the government can come up with is making the school a gun-free zone, and occasionally a couple of cops.

It didn't take long after the City of Boulder's vote to enact local gun restrictions for a lawsuit to pop up. The city council 9-0 voted May 15 to enact restrictions on firearms within the city limits, and the next day, a suit was filed in federal court by radio personality Jon Caldera and the Boulder Rifle Club and a firearms manufacturer.

The suit names all seven city council members, as well as City Manager Jane Brautigan, Boulder Police Chief Gregory Testa, Mayor Suzanne Jones and Mayor Pro Tem Aaron Brockett.

It's not rare to see fishermen casting lines along the South Jetty in Fort Pierce.

But anglers in the same spot openly carrying guns?

It's not a fish tale. Quite a few folks with rods and reels may be openly armed on Memorial Day at the popular area at the end of Seaway Drive.

Thats because Michael Taylor, 38, of Port St. Lucie, is coordinating an Open Carry Fishing Get-Together from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 28 at Jetty Park.

Isnt it great when the clowns to the left claim to be stuck in the middle with you? They use words like common sense and reasonable as if theres no doubt they are. The best part is when they claim they are pro Second Amendment because they own a gun and say that the Second Amendment is about protecting your house, like its true.

Mr. Vervaeke should go back to school and read the Federalist Papers to find out why the Founding Fathers felt the right to bear arms is important. I hope that he reads what they actually said and not what hed like it to say. Clearly, advocating for gun registration is exactly what the Founding Fathers didnt want and preventing such measures is why the Second Amendment exists.

The Washoe County School District notified parents on Thursday that it was revising its dress code policy, removing a ban on clothing that promotes weapons, among other changes.

The change comes after an eighth-grade student at Depoali Middle School filed a federal lawsuit after he was twice told to remove or cover his pro-gun clothing because it was in violation of the districts dress code.

The student, who is unnamed in the lawsuit but is represented by his parents, Audrey and Shaun Guardanapo, claims that the districts dress code policy violates his First Amendment rights.

Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, has infamously said many times, The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun. The shooting tragedy at the Waffle House in Nashville, Tenn., proves that LaPierres statement is wrong. Travis Reinking, the Nashville shooter, was stopped by a good guy without a gun! That good guy was hero James Shaw. How did he do it?

The assailant had to stop shooting to reload his AR-15. This left an opening for Mr. Shaw to wrestle and disarm Reinking before he could reload. The result: many lives were saved. This is why our lawmakers and the leadership of the NRA should support limitations on high-capacity magazines.

Florida municipalities are joining forces to sue the state, saying they should have the right to create their own local gun rules that supersede state laws.

Gun-free zones, high-capacity magazine bans and even informational gun-law signs in local parks and facilities are among the prohibitions in a law the Legislature passed in 1987 that gives the state total control over enacting gun laws.

Twenty municipalities and 61 elected officials have now joined the litigation as plaintiffs against the state government, Gov. Rick Scott, Attorney General Pamela Jo Bondi, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Adam Putnam, state Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Rick Swearingen, Auditor General Sherrill Norman and Floridas Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis.

Scott won the Democratic nomination on May 15, and he'll now compete against Perry. Perry is a former state representative, an Iraq War veteran and a member of the conservative Freedom Caucus in Congress.

They are competing for the newly drawn 10th Congressional District. And thanks to a recent Pennsylvania Supreme Court decision to redraw the state's congressional map, it's a district that has a better chance of flipping in the November General Election.

Yet again we see the disastrous consequences of reliance on magical thinking and mystical gun-free zones. Yet again we see that evil and insane people intent on causing death, injury, and chaos simply ignore the thousands of federal, state, and local criminal laws that criminalize conduct including murder, terrorism, assault, and illegally carrying guns onto school grounds. Yet again our news outlets show us proof that the evil and insane will find a way to hurt or kill the innocent in so-called gun free zones until they voluntarily end their attack, commit suicide, or are stopped by a hero often one who is armed.

The author of Read the founders on Second Amendment (Letters, May 10) provides no evidence that our Founding Fathers, or any of them, intended for the Second Amendment to provide for the violent overthrow of our newly formed nation.

And the Second Amendment means, apparently, to its most enthusiastic adherents that we have to live with the now more-than-occasional mass murder in our high schools.

There was another unfortunate exercise of Second Amendment freedoms Friday in a place called Santa Fe in Texas. At least eight people now have been added to the cost of living in a free nation. We have many freedoms in America. Only one evidently requires blood sacrifices.

If America had in fact begun to reconsider its relationship with guns after two decades of escalating mass shootings, then a crucial test was now arriving in the rural West, where that relationship has long been inseparable. Wyoming has more guns per capita than any other state, with sales rising in each of the past five years, and more than 80 percent of adults in Campbell County have firearms in their homes. Alan once owned more than 250 an entire storage unit of rifles, handguns and antiques until he committed a drug felony in 2006 and lost his legal right to own guns. A popular state slogan remained taped to one of his trucks: Welcome to Wyoming: Consider Everyone Armed.

Congress to consider SAFER Act in wake of Waffle House Shooting

Congress is considering a new law that would make it illegal to give a gun to anyone whose license to own a gun has been revoked. It's called the SAFER Act, short for Stop Access to Firearms Evading Revocation. The bill was inspired by the Waffle House shooting in Antioch.

Congressman Jamie Raskin (D- Md.) authored the bill and says each tragedy involving guns exposes another problem in the nation's network of gun laws.

Travis Reinking got ahold of the weapons which had been taken away from him by the state of Illinois because his father returned them to him, said Raskin. Then he went into Waffle House and he massacred four people.
