The mastermind of the worst terrorist attack on American soil is dead, U.S. President Barack Obama announced late Sunday night, almost 10 years after the attacks that killed almost 3,000 people.
Osama bin Laden -- the longtime leader of al Qaeda -- was killed by U.S. forces in a mansion outside the Pakistani capital of Islamabad along with other family members, a senior U.S. official told CNN.

BISMARCK, N.D. Employees at North Dakota's state mental hospital in Jamestown won't be allowed to keep guns in their vehicles while they're at work.
Last month, lawmakers passed a bill that says workers can keep firearms locked in their vehicles on company property even if their employers don't like it.
The bill allowed employees at the Jamestown state hospital to bring firearms to work as long as the guns were kept in their vehicles.
But on Friday the Legislature decided the new law shouldn't extend to state hospital employees.

An unidentified Yellow Cab driver picked up 19-year-old Travonte Myles just before 3 a.m., according to police.
Shortly after, Myles and the driver got into an argument and the driver pulled the cab over at Roosevelt Boulevard and Bay Vista Drive, according to Largo police Sgt. Richelle Wasylyna.
The driver asked Myles to get out and Myles pulled out a weapon, Wasylyna said.
The cab driver got out of the vehicle and Myles followed him with the gun.
About 3 a.m., the cab driver and Myles then exchange fire. Myles was struck at least three times. |

Area retailers said they can't keep up with the demand for pepper spray.
Local sporting good stores and gun shops have sold thousands of the aerosol spray canisters that can incapacitate an attacker by causing temporary blindness, difficulty breathing, a runny nose and coughing.
The killing of Brianna Denison by what police say is a serial rapist has many young women looking for any line of defense, retail clerks said. |

An Ottawa native, now an attorney for a prestigious Chicago law firm, and his associate, a former Illinois governor, have been appointed to fight the recent Illinois Attorney General's Office's decision to have state police release names of state-registered gun owners.
Matthew R. Carter, who was born and raised in Ottawa, and former Illinois Gov. James R. Thompson colleagues in the Chicago law firm of Winston & Strawn, LLP will represent the Department of State Police to argue the Attorney General's Office was wrong when it issued a recent opinion that state police should make available the names and information of the 1.3 million state residents with Firearm Owner Identification cards. |

Thousands of National Rifle Association members and supporters are expected to make their way to downtown Pittsburgh today to take in the last day of the NRAs annual convention. Over the span of the three day event as many as 70,000 were expected to attend. Among them was Megan Burns of Greensburg who brought her two young children. Mostly just to see what guns the new manufacturers have come out with and also just to show my kids what the NRA is about and why it is here, said Burns. She says she also wants to help her children understand the importance of the second amendment and the responsibility that comes along with owning guns. |

Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday vetoed a bill that would have allowed people to carry guns into most government buildings that dont have armed guards or metal detectors in place.
...
Brewer said the gun bills many provisions on various firearms topics lacked clarity, including where guns would have been prohibited and where they would have been allowed.
Describing herself as a gun-rights backer, Brewer said she will work in coming months on a clear and pragmatic solution to expand the application of our Second Amendment rights in Arizona.

Liberals are frustrated with Barack Obama for not aggressively pushing gun control, but you wouldn't know it from the National Rifle Association's annual meeting.
With no clearly preferred Republican candidate among the 70,000 people who descended on the convention center here this weekend, Obama's name came up more than any other.
Leaders of the powerful gun lobby talked as if the president had declared an all-out war on the Second Amendment. The dire rhetoric is intended to galvanize activists going into the 2012 election season, despite huge legislative gains last November and significant progress advancing their agenda at the state level. |

Three important handgun bills that I strongly support were passed by the House with wide bipartisan support and are now in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
HB 2787 prohibits any public body from disclosing information that identifies the holder of or an applicant for a concealed handgun license.
HB 2792 deals with reciprocity of concealed carry permits. It provides nonresidents who are authorized to carry a concealed handgun in another state with the same protections provided to persons with an Oregon concealed handgun license. |

The University of Kentucky has fired a graduate student and former anesthesia technician, Michael Mitchell, for keeping a gun in his car a mile away from the university hospital where he was employed.
The university then proceeded to try to deny Mitchell unemployment compensation by claiming, unsuccessfully, that he was fired for misconduct. A hearing officer found against the University of Kentucky and in favor of Mitchell.
All this, despite the fact that Mitchell had a Kentucky concealed carry permit, believed he had fully complied with Kentucky law governing concealed carry, and therefore cooperated fully with police and university authorities. |

Attorney General Eric Holder needs to go if he continues to claim he did not know the details about Project Gunrunner and the Justice Department continues to stonewall Congress about the controversial gun sting operation.
So said Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association in a Saturday speech that brought an audience of NRA members to their feet several times at the associations 140th annual members meeting here. It was a demand anticipated by a CBS News blog late Friday. |

The guns on campus law that recently failed may have raised the crime rate, but that's only because it would only have allowed guns near campus, not in the hands of their owners, meaning that they could easily be stolen by irresponsible criminals. Allowing guns on campus would not raise campus crime. Having researched this topic thoroughly for an English paper, I'd like to address some erroneous assumptions made about guns on campus. |

The St. Gabriel Possenti Society, Inc. rejoices at the beatification in Rome on Sunday of Pope John Paul II," Society chairman John M. Snyder said today.
"The late Pope's writings display an appreciation of the right of self-defense so exemplified by St. Gabriel Possenti," Snyder added.
St. Gabriel Possenti used handguns in self-defense when he rescued the villagers of Isola del Gran Sasso, Italy in 1860 from a band of terrorists. Demonstrating his excellent handgun marksmanship, he shot a lizard running across the road. Then, without harming anyone, he drove the terrorists out of town.

A crusader for city bodegas wants to turn deli owners into Dirty Harrys - by urging them to pack heat behind the counter.
Luis Ducasse, head of the Bodega Association of the United States, has been targeting cornershops and delis in crime-ridden neighborhoods, handing out gun-license applications to owners.
"Deli owners make for easy victims," he said. "A person can come in wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun, and the person behind the counter has no place to go, or way to fight back." |

Pass
...
In an explanation of the veto, Brewer said the bill had "too many loopholes and flaws" to sign into law. Brewer "has a long and very strong pro-Second Amendment record," said her spokesman, Matthew Benson. "But these bills, in her view, just took the state down the wrong path."
Charles Heller, a spokesman for the Arizona Citizens Defense League, which supported S.B. 1201, told the Arizona Republic, "I don't know what's gotten into her." It's far too optimistic to say logic has gotten into Brewer, but the veto was commendable all the same. For that, Brewer gets a solid pass.
