MI: Gun ban misfires

A Fife Lake village council member blamed excessive restrictions for the boards decision to shoot down a proposed weapons policy.

Board members voted unanimously against the policy Monday, which would have banned village employees and elected officials from possessing firearms on village-owned properties and work sites, said Trustee Brian Hayes.

State law allows residents to tote weapons on government grounds with the proper permitting and licenses, he said. Law allows government officials to enact weapons restrictions only on government employees and elected officials. Such a ban would have only impacted the villages 12 employees.

It seemed kind of futile to develop a policy, he said.

The Illinois House Judiciary Committee voted in favor of a bill that would create strict new regulations for gun dealers on Tuesday.

Senate Bill 1657 passed through the committee on a 7-6 vote. It will now be sent to the House floor for final consideration.

The bill would require that anyone who sells more than nine guns per year to obtain a special state license. The Illinois system would duplicate much of the federal system that already exists to oversee gun dealers but would add a number of additional costly measures as well.

Yes, indeed. But just try to look at gun deaths as a public health problem in this country and see how far you get. Propose a reporting system that would make it feasible to study gun deaths with a goal of prevention, and you will provoke an outcry over constitutional rights.

We are not talking prevention by prohibiting or even restricting gun ownership, either. There are a variety of ways to make guns safer, many of them through technology that will not permit a weapon to be fired unless it is in the hands of its owner. In the hands of the owners toddler, or a home invader, or an intoxicated teenager or a suicidal veteran, the gun would be inoperable.

Defendants denied they conspired to help Bundy and told jurors the case had nothing to do with cattle. They said they came to protect the public from overzealous and aggressive law-enforcement officers. Defendants said they were moved to join Bundy after seeing internet images of officers throwing an elderly woman to the ground, loosing dogs on one of Bundy's sons and shocking protesters with stun guns.

Defendants attempted to cast the case as a constitutional issue and they were exercising their First Amendment right to assemble and Second Amendment right to bear arms.

But Martinez says the encounter would have ended differently if she hadnt been feet away from an elementary school, a gun free zone. Because both she and her husband keep handguns in their car.

"If it had happened in my car, it would have turned out differently, way differently, Martinez said, claiming shes fired in self-defense before, hitting a burglar climbing over her back fence, and a second time warding off a would-be burglar in her front yard.

"She's tough, said her husband Eli Montoya who posted the incident on Facebook to warn his friends and neighbors. Shes my hero, he said.

"I want them caught. Because he could have easily, by accident, squeezed that trigger."

Its always a good day when gun sense prevails in Olympia.

Thanks to the passage of House Bill 1501, police and victims will now get notification if a felon, fugitive or someone whos the subject of a court protection order illegally attempts to buy a firearm.

Theres little doubt this upgraded notification system will save lives. Victims of domestic violence in particular can breathe a sigh of relief.

The bill was signed into law by Gov. Jay Inslee last week. Starting in July, gun dealers will have to notify the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs within five days of a failed background check. Law enforcement would then notify domestic violence survivors.

Georgia's public colleges and technical schools will soon have to let students with permits carry concealed guns some places on campus. The new law bans guns in certain areas, including spaces where high school students take classes. However, that part of the bill could cause confusion.

The legislation says guns will not be allowed in "any room or space being used for classes in which high school students are enrolled."

The National Rifle Association is suing the state of California over a law restricting magazine capacity to 10 bullets or less the organization argues is an unconstitutional limitation.

The NRA Institute for Legislative Action (ILA) and the California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA) are spearheading the lawsuit, the second launched by the NRA this year against the state. The lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court in San Diego, is part of the NRAs efforts to counter an array of new gun laws in California, collectively referred to by Second Amendment enthusiasts as gunmageddon, enacted in the wake of the 2015 San Bernardino terrorist attack, reports Los Angeles Times.

In a rambling rant made up largely of lies, half-truths and innuendo, Salon.com on Wednesday twice repeated a whopper that jumped off the screen and deserves to be addressed.

Trying to bolster the popular new gun-ban talking point that NRAs dedication to Second Amendment rights is somehow helpful to Islamic State terrorists, Salon used a bait-and-switch tactic in citing the heinous murders in San Bernardino and Orlando to call for more restrictive gun control laws.

Lawmakers in the Louisiana House have advanced a bill that would prohibit supplying children 12-years-old and younger with a fully automatic firearm.

The Advocate reported the measure House Bill 67, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Barbara Norton was approved by the Louisiana House Committee on Administration of Criminal Justice on a 7-6 vote.

The legislation would essentially make it unlawful for adults to in any way provide children with fully automatic guns, even in a supervised setting such as a gun range. Those who do so could be fined and possibly given prison time.

We have yet to reach Memorial Day, but the fun police have already set their sights on at least one cherished summer childhood activity. In an article for Pupsugar.com, titled, Why Kids Should Never Play With Water Guns. Period., author Lauren Levy lectures the nations parents on the hidden menace of squirt guns.

According to Levy, no child should be permitted to use a water gun under any circumstances. That a particular squirt gun might bear no resemblance whatsoever to a real firearm is of no concern to Levy, who contends, Even if they're colorful and super cool, kids shouldn't be playing with water guns because it normalizes the real thing.

When we think of side-by-side shotguns, we often think of the famous British names, like Purdey and Holland & Holland, or the well-known domestic makers, such as Winchester, Parker Brothers, L.C. Smith, and Ithaca. But under the radar are numerous American-made doubles weve never heard ofthough John Eurom has. And hes made it his mission to collect them all.

A highly specialized machinist, Eurom, 57, grew up on an Iowa farm, and learned early on how to take machinery apart and put it back togethera skill that dovetails well with his passion for side-by-side shotguns.

Outdoor Man was a Hollywood set version of a sporting goods store, of course, but it did have a gun counter and there was a gun cabinet in the Baxter household. There were plenty of references to hunting, NSSF said Wednesday. Last Man Standing also was a family-oriented show with life lessons every week delivered through plot lines involving his wife, three daughters, two sons in law and a neighbor. In many ways, the show was an island of mainstream values in a sea of network political correctness and pandering.

The announcement spawned widespread speculation the network dumped Allen for his right-wing views and overt support for President Donald Trump, both on and off the camera a rumor the network has denied.

After being cleared of manslaughter charges, 51-year-old Paul Kim returned to the internet cafe in Flushing where he fatally stabbed 19-year-old Yangpu Fan.

A Queens grand jury voted a no true bill, dismissing the charges against Kim May 10, the Queens district attorneys office said. His lawyer said he acted in self-defense.

Kim was arrested and charged with manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon last month after a confrontation that led to the stabbing of Fan at K&D internet cafe, located at 38-19 Union St., police said. Later that day, police arrived at the New York Presbyterian Hospital in Flushing and discovered Fan with a stab wound to the torso. He was pronounced dead later that night.

It will soon be a lot cheaper to legally carry guns in the state of Texas. Lawmakers in the Texas Senate and House approved legislation that will lower the first-time gun license fee from $140 to $40. Renewal fees will also be lowered from $70 to $40.

Jacksonville, Texas Republican Sen. Robert Nichols said that the bill would make it more affordable for Texans to exercise their second amendment rights. Gun owners and even gun instructors seem to be happy to know they'll be able to save more money in the future.

The Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 contained a provision which would allow persons subject to a gun ban to regain their constitutional rights.

Make no mistake about it: The procedure is no piece of cake. A person has to convince the ATF that they dont represent a danger, or, failing that, they have to convince a federal court. But even this is too much for the gun-hating Schumer. For roughly 25 years, the Schumer amendment to the Commerce-Justice-Science Appropriations Bill has prohibited any federal funds from being used to restore anyones constitutional rights.

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen. Samuel Adams
