The council's agenda Tuesday, May 19, included Sheriff Mike Lewis presenting a possible resolution to declare Wicomico County a "Second Amendment Sanctuary." That "sanctuary" status refers to states, counties or localities in the United States adopting laws or resolutions to block enforcement of certain gun control measures. |

The Supreme Court has re-listed the ten Second Amendment cases it has previously distributed for conference. This morning the Supreme Court issued orders from the justices private conference last week. The justices did not add any new cases to their argument calendar for next term. Perhaps most significantly, they did not act at all on the 10 gun rights cases that they had considered for a second time at last weeks conference.

Close observers of gun politics might be surprised to learn that decades-long Chicago gun control advocate and Catholic priest Father Michael Pfleger is in fact capable of some logic. An Agence France-Press piece on the continuing violence in Chicago amidst the COVID-19 lockdown shared Pfleger's thoughts on the Windy City's crime problem. Eschewing the notion that the ongoing lockdown could have ever stemmed the violence, AFP reported,"Pfleger argued that someone who was prepared to commit murder was unlikely to be too bothered about observing a stay-at-home order."

Political reporters just love stories about lawmakers wasting tax dollars.
Every two years, when a new batch of legislators would arrive in town, there was a tradition that they got to decorate their offices with whatever they wanted. Lavish sofas, mirrored walls, wood-paneled break-fronts and you name it as each new arrival competed with the other for top decorating honors while running up the tab on the taxpayers dime.
And, soon after they settled into their new digs, the news media pounded out stories on how much was being doled out until those poor souls cried uncle.
It was then that the State Capitol Commission was hatched.

Fox News is reporting on the latest legal activities against primarily Democrat governors and their emergency orders aimed ostensibly at reducing the spread of the coronavirus, raising a question about whether these state chief executives have overstepped their authority.
In Wisconsin, Democrat Gov. Tony Evers was slapped down by that states Supreme Court, which nullified his safer at home order on the grounds that his administration did not have the power to unilaterally impose the restrictions without the input of the state legislature. |

The recent introduction by Ruger of a couple new pistols has rekindled the ancient debate, beloved of gun counters and internet firearms forums, of how much caliber is really enough for effective personal protection. Rugers new Ruger-57, which is sort of an FN Five-seveN for everyone, may have single-handedly revived the 5.7x28 mm round. The cartridge was developed in response to a late-Cold War need to give rear-area personnel a cartridge that could defeat Soviet body armor when fired from a submachinegun-like Personal Defense Weapon, or PDW. The 5.7s original design concept was that a 5.7 mm bullet that penetrated armor would do more damage than a 9 mm or .45-caliber bullet that didnt. |

One of the interesting things about the militaryespecially in centuries pastis that under certain circumstances it will doggedly refurbish or reconfigure war materielsometimes to the point of absurdity. An interesting example is this months choice for I Have This Old Gun, a musket that started out as a smoothbore flintlock, was rifled and altered to percussion ignition and then, finally, made into a breechloader.

Everytown for Gun Safety produced an analysis that sought to tie an alarming spike in fatal firearms-related accidents involving children to the recent surge in firearms purchases across the country. Their point is predicated on the deliberate exclusion and misuse of their own data they used the tragic deaths of children to push their anti-gun agenda. Their own historical data disproves their claim.

Theres an old split-rail fence at Mom and Dads place that separates the lawn from the horse pasture. I like to lean against it just before dark and owl hoot. Across the pasture, and beyond the creek, is an oak hillside, and in the spring a gobbler roosts there as many nights as not. The acoustics must be perfect because if I hoot from that fence and hes there, hell answer. Tonight, hes there. |

On May 18th, the Alabama Legislature adjourned sine die from the 2020 session. During this session, sheriffs attempted at every turn to derail NRA-supported Senate bill 47 and House Bill 39, bills to improve your right to self-defense by creating the option of a lifetime carry permit. The Alabama Sheriffs Association even attempted to push legislation to create a new central repository of all concealed carry permits without providing any benefit to citizens. |
