As firearms and self-defense activists, we see a lot of news stories that involve guns. Unfortunately much of it involves the misuse of firearms. Even more unfortunate is the inaccurate reporting of firearms use and misuse in these stories. Many of us read the mainstream media reports and wonder if the media has an agenda to make any use of a firearm sound bad. I suppose some do, but I think much of it is not intentional. Most reporters, and indeed most of the public, are uninformed about firearms terminology. I believe they tend to write stories the way they have seen other reporters write them. Of course, reporting using a flawed model, only results in worse reporting. |

Dozens of law enforcement officers surrounded a church Sunday where they believed they had cornered a shooter or shooters who wounded two officers and a civilian in bursts of automatic gunfire, police said. About 75 shots were fired in the attack late Saturday, said David Duke, Moscow's assistant police chief. Duke said the attack was apparently an ambush, with the shooter firing into the Latah County Courthouse to lure people into the line of fire.

POST FALLS -- Zach Doty is raising eyebrows by taking the Second Amendment for a walk.
Doty, who turned 18 last month, has been stopped by police twice in the past month after citizens spotted him with a loaded 9mm Glock pistol in a hip holster in plain view.
No citations were issued because Idaho code allows residents 18 and older to openly carry a firearm in public. To carry a concealed weapon, you must be 21 and have a permit.....
....The brothers have been to the library, grocery stores, parks and other places with the guns. They're not allowed to openly carry on school property, in courthouses or jails. |

Joseph added, “We have looked at this evidence over the weekend. I had consultations with the honourable Director of Public Prosecutions. In light of the evidence, we are proceeding no further with the evidence. We cannot negate self-defence, so we are asking the court to discharge the accused.” Scotland, who led Michelle Solomon, commended Joseph and the DPP for stopping the trial. He said the prosecution’s main witness, while under cross-examination, put the case strictly on the issue of self-defence. He said the State had no choice in the matter. Justice Rampersad then directed the jury to formally acquit Sookhoo. |

Washington, D.C., Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) has the Second Amendment in his crosshairs. He faces a crucial choice over the next 90 days with major implications for residents in D.C. and across the country: Should the city ask the Supreme Court to review Parker v. District of Columbia, a March 9 decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals that said D.C.’s handgun ban is unconstitutional? On May 8, the city lost round two when the appellate court declined to re-hear the case. That leaves the Supremes as the court of last resort. |

As part of his national campaign against illegal guns, Mr. Bloomberg has targeted Mr. Tiahrt aggressively, even running television ads in his Kansas district that tell voters that a law their congressman sponsored is helping criminals, not the police.
The veteran Republican lawmaker has stayed mostly quiet in the face of the onslaught, but now he is fighting back. In a 30-minute interview in his office last week, Mr. Tiahrt accused Mr. Bloomberg and his aides of negotiating in bad faith, and he says the famously nonpartisan mayor is putting politics over police safety. |

In the wake of the Virginia Tech massacre, Hudson County residents say they strongly support more stringent gun laws, according to a recent Jersey Journal/New Jersey City University poll. The poll, taken a week after the deranged Virginia Tech student Seung-Hui Cho used two pistols and 170 rounds of ammunition to kill 32 of his classmates in the deadliest mass shooting in American history, found that 81 percent of Hudson County supports tougher gun laws - including 77 percent of Republicans and 90 percent of independents who responded. |

A burglary suspect was shot by a store owner early Friday at 1144 E. Main St., according to Rochester police. The 58-year-old business owner reported a burglary at 1:50 a.m. after he was alerted by an alarm, said Rochester Police Officer Deidre Taccone. Police searched the building but found no suspects, Taccone said. While the owner waited for other police officers to arrive to search for evidence such as fingerprints, a 41-year-old man entered the store about 4:15 a.m., Taccone said. The store owner confronted the man and the intruder came at the store owner, she said. The business owner shot the man with a registered handgun and called 911. He turned over his handgun to officers at the scene. Police are continuing to investigate. |

The Virginia Citizens Defense League, a trigger-happy group that regards the National Rifle Association as slightly spineless on gun rights, was scheduled to hold a raffle Thursday night in a Fairfax County, Va., government building. The door prizes included a hunting rifle, a semiautomatic handgun and ammunition more than $2,000 in merchandise in all. The leagues goal was to assist Virginia firearms dealers alleged to have skirted the states already lax laws on gun purchases. So, a month after a deranged gunman killed 32 people at Virginia Tech, a Virginia group is coddling scofflaw gun dealers in the same state. |

Some people are wondering why Damon Wells feels compelled to say that he’s “sorry” for shooting and killing a teenager who tried to rob him.
Last month, Wells was walking home from a neighborhood store in Cleveland when he was accosted by 15-year-old Arthur Buford and a 16-year-old accomplice.
...
Wells told police the boys demanded money, following him onto his porch. Wells, who is licensed to carry a concealed weapon, drew his gun and shot Buford. |

Every incident involving a gun is thoroughly investigated, said Tom Keith, the Forsyth County district attorney. The circumstances are weighed, including a person’s record. Prosecutors also consider the community’s attitude toward guns.
“I remember a case years ago in which an older gentleman shot at an intruder in his house with a .22,” Keith said. “The police asked me if they should charge him. I said, ‘No, give him his gun back and tell him to trade it in for a .38.’ We’re lay people at times, too, you know.” |

Miss Rangihuna told the court: "I was very fearful for my life. At the end of the day, if it wasn't for D J (Morgan) we probably would not be here."
Miss Bachop said: "If D J wasn't there, I don't know what they would have done to us. He saved our lives. It was self-defence, completely. He is a caring person. He cared enough to step up for us."
But crown prosecutor Leisha Pettigrew said: "Taking a shotgun, loading and firing it in this situation is not a reasonable use of force. It is not justified self-defence." |

Last Tuesday, the Vanguard reported that the Oregon House of Representatives had again picked up a bill that would, among other things, provide firearms to campus security officers in the Oregon University System ("Bill proposed to arm campus safety officers," May 8).
House Bill 3318, if passed, would not only allow the arming of campus officers, it would require them to have a higher standard of training, close to the level of police officers. It would pay them more and require a minimum of six officers to be on duty at all times, with one certified police officer on call. |

"...Unless the people are considered in these two views, we shall never be able to understand the principle on which this system was constructed. I view the states as made for the people, as well as by them, and not the people as made for the states; the people..."
"...It is to be remembered, that the government of the United States is based on the principles promulgated in the Declaration of Independence, by the congress of 1776; "that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness..."
"...that it rendered the constitution, laws, and treaties of the United States supreme over the constitutions of the States..." |

For example, consider homicide rates not involving firearms. The U.S. statistics rank higher than many European countrys' total murder rates, while Mexico, the Philippines and Taiwan have no-gun homicide rates higher than the U.S. total murder rate. Furthermore, 27.2 percent of Swiss nationals own hundreds of thousands of fully automatic rifles in their homes as part of their national defense; Switzerland has a low firearm homicide rate. Yet Great Britain with its draconian gun laws has a higher firearm murder rate. In the long run, if potential mass killers didn't have access to firearms (an unlikely prospect even if the gun laws were changed) they would just turn to other weapons to commit their crime, a bomb being a likely choice. |

Take the “shoot the burglar” bill as an example. Promoted as part of a national campaign to highlight the right to bear arms, this new law offers the premise that if someone is shot outside of your house at night they will be presumed to have been burglars and you will be presumed innocent.
But this law was not really about burglars. North Dakota has not had a dramatic increase in the number of burglaries, so we should look elsewhere for the undisclosed purposes for this legislation. One thing for sure, if murder is no longer murder, it will reduce the number of murder trials in North Dakota and enhance our reputation as one of the most crime-free states in the union. |
