'The document leaked to Fox News was deemed so sensitive by the Justice Department that it was not provided to Congress, except in a secured room at department headquarters.'

Having become a liability to his highly-placed former political patrons, and cut off from earning a livelihood doing that which he has spent his career lifetime at, perhaps hell have incentive to open up on what more he knows about upper level Justice Department cognizance of Fast and Furious.

The bottom line is, I went through an extraordinary level of verification on this story before publishing it.

If it turns out that it is, as the press release states, "completely devoid of any foundation," that means someone went to extraordinary lengths to create and perpetuate a hoax story, and to draw me and others into it, and to smooth entry by using credible people.

A former top Justice Department official in Arizona leaked an internal memo from a federal agent who had criticized the politically charged "Fast and Furious" gun trafficking operation, a government report found.
Dennis Burke, who was U.S. Attorney for the state, admitted to senior Justice Department officials in 2011 that he had leaked to the media the memo written by John Dodson, an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to the Justice Department inspector general's finding on Monday.
The IG report said the leak was an apparent attempt to undermine Dodson's credibility.
Burke resigned after making the disclosure.

Mandatory Firearm Insurance is the Newest Ridiculous Proposal

While we should not be surprised by now at the ridiculous proposals rolled out by our government, the gun insurance proposals springing up around the country nevertheless cause a face palm from any rational thinker. The new gun bill proposal in D.C. would mandate purchasing a $250,000 liability insurance policy. The DC Council is currently considering the proposal, which would mandate coverage for negligent and intentional acts not taken in self-defense, with the intention that it would provide compensation to individuals whose person or property was in some way injured or damaged as a result of the use of a firearm. Gun insurance proposals are ridiculous, something easily seen once thought through for longer than the lifespan of a mayfly.

A bill allowing gun owners to stow their firearms in their car while they work has been approved by the Alabama House of Representatives and is waiting for Gov... Robert Bentley for an expected signature.

The bill would allow those with a valid Alabama gun permit to keep firearms in their vehicle. It also provides for those with hunting licenses to store an unloaded rifle or shotgun in their vehicles while at work.

Ed.: The bill also does other good things--happy news for all those that live or travel through AL.

Meanwhile, the pro-gun moderates see a new opportunity in the dead background-check bill: They want to turn a revived bill into one that further expands rights for gun owners.

Gottlieb didnt respond to a request for comment from FRONTLINE. But a close colleague at the Second Amendment Foundation, Joe Tartaro, said that Gottlieb would also be involved with any new iteration of the bill.

Richard Feldman, a former NRA lobbyist who was shunned by more hardline gun-rights supporters for compromising with President Bill Clinton on child-safety locks,* said hes also getting involved.

Consider this December 1993 editorial in which the paper effectively urged the repeal of the Second Amendment:

"You will not feel safe, your children will not be safe, until there are almost no guns on the streets and in the homes. No guns, period, except for those held by law enforcement officers and a few others, including qualified hunters and collectors. ... We must, as a nation, move toward a very different model, one that presumptively bars private citizens from owning a firearm unless they can demonstrate a special need and ability to do so. ... We think the time has come for Americans to tell the truth about guns. They are not for us; we cannot handle them. They kill people, our children included...."

Kansas legislators are close to approving restrictions favored by the National Rifle Association on the use of state tax dollars to promote or oppose gun-control measures or to lobby local, state or federal officials on the issue.

The Senate approved the measure Friday on a 31-6 vote. The House could consider it as early as Monday, and its approval would send the measure to Gov. Sam Brownback. The Republican governor is a strong gun-rights supporter but hasn't said publicly whether he'd sign the measure.

The National Rifle Association is proud to support a lawsuit filed today in federal court by 55 Colorado county sheriffs, the firearms industry trade association, several firearms retailers, individuals with disabilities and other parties which challenges the State of Colorados recently enacted gun control laws.

The National Rifle Association, the many plaintiffs in this case, and the law-abiding gun owners in the state of Colorado know that the recently enacted gun control laws are unconstitutional, said Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRAs Institute for Legislative Action.

HB 1355 would prevent individuals who voluntarily commit themselves for mental illness treatment but then quickly check out from buying a firearm.

The bill would require their names be submitted to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System database, where they would remain until a doctor says they are no longer a danger to themselves or others. At that point, they may apply to have their names removed from the database.

In Iowa, however, advocates on both sides were left disappointed.

At least 10 bills directly addressed firearms. Most died in committees. One made it to the floor for a vote in the House, where it passed and then died in the Senate.

"Can either side claim victory? I would say no," said Rep. Matt Windschitl, R-Missouri Valley, a railroad engineer and gunsmith. "It's reality in a Legislature with two parties in charge."

But opponents of the ban say its not good policy.

"It's a slippery slope when you start letting people's subjective reactions determine public policy," said Second Amendment attorney Robert Wareham, of The Law Center P.C.

Wareham is an open carry advocate who says that emotional reactions to weapons are no reason for the government to take away rights.

If somebody is shocked that Im exercising my constitutional right, all of a sudden that right needs to be infringed, he asked. Thats just a philosophy that I disagree with.

Additionally, Wareham says the proposed ordinance gives the sheriff or his designee the authority to determine which buildings the ban will apply to.

A Texas man arrested with 21 guns in his car while passing through New Jersey four years ago will remain in prison after an appeals court on Monday upheld his conviction in a case that could wind up in front of the state Supreme Court.

Dustin Reininger is serving a five-year sentence with a three-year minimum before he's eligible for parole.

A jury convicted him in absentia in 2010 on several weapons counts including illegal possession of shotguns, rifles, hollow-point bullets and a high-capacity magazine after police found him sleeping in his car behind a bank in Readington early on the morning of March 20, 2009.

State lawmakers wrapped up their 2013 legislative session earlier this week in Montpelier with good results for Vermont NRA members.

Montezuma County Sheriff Dennis Spruell stood with 17 other uniformed sheriffs Friday in a packed lobby of a Denver office building to announce a Second Amendment lawsuit against Gov. John Hickenlooper.

The sheriffs, plus 36 other sheriffs who didnt attend the announcement and several other plaintiffs, claim that two gun bills Hickenlooper signed in March are unconstitutional.

The bills require background checks for private gun sales and ban the sale of ammunition magazines that hold more than 15 rounds. Plaintiffs say they violate the Second and 14th Amendments to the Constitution.

The Nucla Town Board last week passed the ordinance requiring residents to own firearms, but it has exceptions for heads of households who dont want to participate or who cannot legally possess a gun.

According to the Montrose Daily Press (http://tinyurl.com/alwg3a3), Nuclas ordinance passed by a 5-1 vote. It was inspired by a law requiring gun ownership with some exceptions recently enacted by the northern Georgia town of Nelson.

Gun-control opponents who raised a hue and cry during the recent legislative session, claiming their constitutional rights were under attack, have taken the next step and sued Colorado in federal court. And while their lawsuit offers several serious arguments (as well as several weak ones), we'd be quite surprised if the new statutes were struck down.

In fact, if Colorado's new gun-control laws are beyond the pale, it's hard to see how any meaningful legislation regulating the possession and transfer of guns could pass muster.
