With all of the shutdowns and closures meant to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, enjoying the Pure Michigan outdoors is one way we can keep ourselves entertained and active.
But we must continue to do so safely, and outdoor regulations and requirements remain in effect. You must still, for example, obtain an off-road vehicle license, and you must still pass a hunters safety course to buy a hunting license.
Were glad to see the Michigan Department of Natural Resources announce recently that theyre trying to make it easier to do so.
All first-time hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1960 are required to take and pass a hunter safety course that usually includes field day classes.

Two men, during the Catoosa County commissioners May 19 meeting, held signs over their heads and demanded the county declare itself a Second Amendment sanctuary.
Their brief demonstration took place during the Board of Commissioners public comment period, just moments after the board passed a proclamation declaring May 25-31, 2020, as Constitutional Awareness and Celebration Week. The proclamation places special emphasis on gun rights under the Second Amendment, which guarantees the right to bear arms. |

In my last column, I wrote about the fact that I am not familiar with shotguns. To hedge a bit, I admit I am not familiar with shotguns, but I am familiar with firearms.
Thus I recognize the role a shotgun can play in capable hands, albeit they might not be my hands. Thats why I confidently recommend a shotgun as a desirable tool for defending the home.
Of course, pistols and rifles often play a home defense role, but shotguns have unique qualities suitable for this job. |

Before the Oklahoma legislature adjourned on Friday, they passed Senate Bill #1081, an anti Red Flag bill. Authored by Sen. Nathan Dahm, (R-Tulsa) and Rep. Jay Steagall, (R-Yukon), the bill was signed into law by Gov. Kevin Stitt on Saturday.
The new law prevents Oklahoma cities and towns from enacting policies that would allow a court or other entity to restrict gun access to people who they deem to be an imminent danger. The bill passed the House 77-14 and the Senate 34-9. |

U.S. Sen Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) joined Everytown for Gun Safetys vice presidential webinar forum where she trotted out her yarn about gun laws and Uncle Dick in the deer stand.
Its time we get Uncle Dick down from there. First of all, deer season has been over for months; now, hes just poaching. Second and most importantly, these gun control laws that politicians banter about have nothing to do with hunting. Its time to make our elected officials read and understand the U.S. Constitution they swore to defend including the Bill of Rights and live up to the words that are written. |

Perhaps a mayor somewhere suggested protesters bristling with weapons, bearing "Open [insert city] now!" signs and screaming threats might not be such a good idea, especially after the spate of shootings over pandemic protocols. But most Oklahomans are Second Amendment advocates, and their elected officials are the same - even if they favor some restrictions. Yet a group of legislators saw fit, via Senate Bill 1081, to create an "anti-red flag law" to protect innocent civilians from that cadre of evil mayors who want to take their guns. |

In Jackson, Mississippi, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba signed an executive order purporting to suspend the right to openly carry a firearm in the city. The right to openly carry a firearm in Mississippi is protected under the state constitution, and many courts have held that it is also protected by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
For obvious reasons, that right cannot be suspended simply because there is a public health crisis. |

Sadly, the 21 fatalities in 2020 is not the peak for the March-April period according to Everytowns data. It is tied for second with the year 2016. Everytown focuses on averages to avoid the year-to-year comparison that shows that the 21 fatal accidents in 2020 is similar to and even lower than other years in their own data. The time period used for their average was deliberately chosen because it gives the smallest average possible. The victims of these tragic accidents from 2015 through 2020 range in age from 1 to 28 years old, with the age of one victim unknown to Everytown. |

The fatal shooting involving B.J. Baldwin in Las Vegas last month was a clear case of self-defense, according to Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson.
According to reports in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Baldwin and his girlfriend Tori Nonaka were sitting in their vehicle in the parking lot of a restaurant at around 2:00am on April 22 when two men approached them. An altercation broke out, and 18 rounds of gunfire were exchanged. Josef Smith, 43, was killed, and Smiths brother Kevin, aged 40, ran from the scene and was later arrested. Neither Baldwin, who is trained in firearm protection and had a concealed weapon permit, nor Nonaka were injured. |

Oklahomas governor has signed a controversial measure that attempts to pre-empt officials from enacting so-called red flag laws.
Red flag laws, also known as extreme risk protection orders, allow law enforcement or families to ask judges to temporarily take firearms from individuals who might pose a danger to themselves or others.
Oklahomas new Anti-Red Flag Act prohibits municipalities, courts and counties from adopting policies restricting gun access through such protection orders. |

This political move could be overshadowed by the Supreme Courts continued inaction on at least ten Second Amendment cases now pending. Mondays Court orders did not list any of those cases as either being accepted for review or denied, so the proverbial can has been once more kicked down the road. The next High Court conference on cases for the fall term is this Thursday, May 21. Orders from that conference will be released next Tuesday, May 26, according to Scotus.blog. |

Close observers of gun politics might be surprised to learn that decades-long Chicago gun control advocate and Catholic priest Father Michael Pfleger is in fact capable of some logic.
An Agence France-Press piece on the continuing violence in Chicago amidst the COVID-19 lockdown shared Pfleger's thoughts on the Windy City's crime problem. Eschewing the notion that the ongoing lockdown could have ever stemmed the violence, AFP reported,
Pfleger argued that someone who was prepared to commit murder was unlikely to be too bothered about observing a stay-at-home order.
Pfleger's key insight will be familiar to gun rights supporters. |

In 1992, working as a TV reporter, I somehow convinced my station to do a story about Gunsite Academy. Bill Jeans, rangemaster at the time, ushered me into the inner sanctum.
Cooper was equally renowned for his precision with language, and he did not tolerate incompetence. In the armory, I asked him about his personal philosophy of self-defense.
He opened his mouth, but no sound came out. It took almost two agonizing secondsI timed it because I still have the videofor him to speak.
"I am not sure of that sentence, 'A personal philosophy...' What's an impersonal philosophy?" |
