SD: South Dakota is a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary

Amid all this, the right that exists to defend all other rights is also under assault.

Yes, Im talking about the 2nd Amendment, our right to keep and bear arms. The Biden administration is attempting to erode this essential right that the founding fathers passionately supported. He has signed executive orders and pursued legislation to strip law-abiding citizens of their rights, and he has promised to do worse.

Since I became governor, I have enhanced South Dakotas protections for 2nd Amendment rights. The first bill I signed as governor was constitutional carry, also known as permitless carry. Every law-abiding citizen should have the 2nd Amendment rights guaranteed.

A woman shot and killed a man in Oakley early Friday in a case that police are treating as self-defense.

Officers responded at 12:39 a.m. to a report of a 51-year-old man shot in the 200 block of West Cypress Road.

The man was found in the driveway of a home and succumbed to his injuries at the scene, police said. His name has not been released.

Investigators detained three people at the home and learned that a 74-year-old woman there has an elder abuse restraining order against the man because of a history of physical violence, and more alleged violence by the man led her to shoot him in self-defense, according to police.

One man died and another was injured after gunfire at an apartment early Friday that resulted from an attempted robbery, police said.

Police did not make any arrests and called the shooting a case of self-defense. Authorities did not identify either man immediately.

The self-defense shooting was one of two that occurred in the eastern area of Contra Costa County early Friday. An Oakley woman also fatally shot a man against whom she had filed a restraining order for elder abuse, police said.

London gun maker Lewis Barbar is credited with making flintlock pistols that are the earliest version of our modern bird head pistol grip. Barbar, active in the 1700s, made pocket pistols with a grip swept a bit forward at the bottom and possessing a knob of sorts.

Lacking art or photos for this piece, you can get the idea by thinking, Pirate pistol. From that came the early bird head grips, which are swept forward at the butt and taper down to a point so that an upside down bird head is configured.

But one question remains: Should an 18-year-old be allowed to buy a semi-automatic rifle?

In the last couple of years, California, Florida and Washington state have responded to the string of mass shootings by young men by raising the minimum age to buy certain kinds of rifles, such as the Bushmaster.

Gun rights groups, meanwhile, have sued, calling this a violation of young adults Second Amendment rights.

Last week, a panel of three federal judges in California agreed, overturning the higher minimum age approved by the state last year.

Led by Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.), a group of Democratic senators are pushing for a requirement for all would-be gun owners to first acquire a Department of Justice (DOJ) license.

Joined by Senators Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Booker is using Saturdays mass shooting in Buffalo to justify this latest attack on Second Amendment-protected rights.

This is the moment to enact ambitious legislation as a nation, we must rise to it, or we are fated to witness the deadly scenes of this past weekend and years past over again, he said in a statement.

Its a privately manufactured firearm, also known as a ghost gun. This means it has no serial number and no associated background check; it has no trace in the gun world.

We've seen an explosion of these firearms being recovered here in D.C., ATF Assistant Special Agent In Charge Chris Amon said as we sat down for an interview in a nearby lab room.

The draw for criminals to get their hands on ghost guns is obvious. You can order a ghost gun kit online, pick one up from someone who bought one or make one with a 3-D printer.

You don't have to be overly handy, Agent Amon said. With some basic tools, you know, you can assemble one of these firearms within 30 to 45 minutes

Workplace violence

This term would no longer include lawful acts of self-defense or defense of others, or self-inflicted harm that does involve violence or threats of violence to others. Rather, workplace violence would be defined as any act of violence or threat of violence that occurs in a place of employment.

Most American shooters by now have noticed the influx of Turkish-made pistols, which are typically priced less than better-known brands of comparable quality. Buffalo Cartridge Company recently expanded to include importation of its own 9 mm Turk, the polymer frame BRG9 Elite, and first impressions are positive.

Pointing to a ruling in a California case, lawyers for the National Rifle Association this week urged a federal appellate court to strike down a Florida law prohibiting sales of rifles and other long guns to adults under age 21.

A three-judge panel of the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in March heard arguments in the Florida lawsuit, which the NRA filed after the Legislature passed the law in 2018 in response to the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

The ban on long-gun sales to people ages 18 through 20 was included in a sweeping school-safety law. Federal law already barred sales of handguns to people under 21.

At midnight on Wednesday, the Alaska Legislature adjourned from its 2022 Legislative Session. Mandatory firearm storage legislation, House Bill 203, failed to gain enough votes to pass in committee. Unfortunately, Second Amendment Emergency Powers Protection Legislation, Senate Bill 136, fell short by just 2 votes for final passage in the afternoon hours of the session.

The Best .308 Hunting Rifles in 2022

The .308 Winchester turns 70 years old in 2022, and despite being rather long in the tooth, this round still ranks among the most popular hunting and shooting cartridges in the world, especially for hunting rifles. Theres no doubt that newer cartridges like the 6.5 Creedmoor and PRC and Winchesters new 6.8 Western have some ballistic efficiencies over the .308, but that hasnt eroded the .308s mass appeal. If youre looking for a short-action cartridge that offers ample punch for most big game animals combined with moderate recoil, and you want plenty of factory hunting loads from which to choose, then the .308 is still a solid bet. Heres a list of the best .308 hunting rifles that Ive used in the field or on the range.

A war correspondent in Ukraine found a vivid and inspirational example of the need for the right to keep and bear arms

While reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine, in March, I found myself swimming in a horrific, frightening, wonderful mix of dread, compassion and desperation to remain free. The literal tool for that freedommany types of gunswere in Ukrainians hands. Shopkeepers, school teachers, engineers and professional soldiers were all armed and ready to fight for individual and national liberty.

I soon learned that, in late January, inside a snowy village on the outskirts of Kyiv, civilians came to learn to shoot AK-47s. This was part of widespread training courses designed to teach as many people as possible to defend themselves against the then-possibility that Moscow would invade.

I am ready to make a bargain with the devil. And the deal is this: Babies for guns.

Thats right, Im talking about forfeiting a womans constitutional right to reproductive freedom if we can end the madness of gun violence. Ill trade Roe v. Wade for repealing the Second Amendment.

A fight over the sale of ghost guns and parts to make them has come to Western Pennsylvania as a Butler County gun parts supplier on Friday filed a federal lawsuit against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The complaint, filed by Not an LLC, which operates as JSD Supply on New Castle Road in Prospect, alleges that the ATF is improperly interpreting the Gun Control Act of 1968 and illegally enforcing policies not set to take effect until Aug. 24.

I don't do corpus linguistics and so I won't dispute Koppelman's criticisms of it. My only contribution to the field was to identify egregious misclassification of quotes by several scholars who filed an amicus brief in Second Amendment Supreme Court case. Kopel, Corpus Linguistics and the Second Amendment: Support for the right to bear arms for all purposes, Volokh Conspiracy, Oct. 29, 2021.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property . . . Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them. Thomas Paine, Thoughts on Defensive War (1775).
