Police say a homeless woman entered a Dairy Queen restaurant and threatened employees with a grenade.
When 30-year-old Renee Deshaies attempted to leave the scene near Olive and Main Street, she still had the grenade in her hand.
The victims believed the grenade was real and feared for their safety.
Police say the grenade was not real and was only used for training purposes.
When Deshaies was interviewed, she believed it was real. |

Los Angeles residents are up in arms over the existence of the "Gold Card," a plastic parking bureau card distributed to city offices that includes a special phone number. The obscure Gold Card Services Desk allowed the mayor and other elected officials to expedite citation reviews. On the back, the card notes that the holder may have an "urgent need to resolve any parking citation matter which requires special attention." It promises "you will be immediately connected to our Gold Card Specialist." A report released Thursday by City Controller Wendy Greuel found that about 1,000 Los Angeles city parking citations were dismissed over a two-year period -- some without justification -- as part of the Gold Card operation.

Two Detroit Police officers who allegedly partied inside a blind pig while on duty and tipped off patrons about an impending raid have been suspended without pay.
Officers Henry Jackson and Jamil Martin had been on paid suspension, pending an investigation into their actions the morning of March 27, when they were spotted entering the club by officers from the Wayne County Sheriff's Narcotics and Morality Unit and Detroit Police, who were staking out a storefront blind pig at 8619 Southfield.
Ed.: A 'blind pig' is an illegal bar, akin to a speakeasy, though traditionally a lower class establishment. Yeah, I had to look it up too. :-) |

A Tucson, Ariz., SWAT team defends shooting an Iraq War veteran 60 times during a drug raid, although it declines to say whether it found any drugs in the house and has had to retract its claim that the veteran shot first. And the Pima County sheriff scolded the media for "questioning the legality" of the shooting. Jose Guerena, 26, died the morning of May 5. He was asleep in his Tucson home after working a night shift at the Asarco copper mine when his wife, Vanessa, saw the armed SWAT team outside her youngest son's bedroom window. "She saw a man pointing at her with a gun," said Reyna Ortiz, 29, a relative who is caring for Vanessa and her children. Ortiz said Vanessa Guerena yelled, "Don't shoot! I have a baby!"

Regarding possible new gun legislation, it seems as if liberals who are anti-Second Amendment have problems with their mental abilities or lack the confidence to own firearms. Therefore I would feel much safer if they did not own firearms.
As for the requirements the left wants, that's just stupid. I have hunted and owned a firearm since age 16, served eight years in the military with an honorable discharge, have no rap sheet, have taken hunter safety classes and am still hunting, and I'm 75 years old. What other training should I or those like me be expected to have? What training and background checks are required of criminals? |

Our preference would be for Wisconsin to buck the trend and continue to not allow residents to carry concealed firearms, something that is legal in various forms in 48 other states. The risks do not outweigh the benefits and in a state where Second Amendment rights are explicitly guaranteed in a number of ways, such as the right to fish and hunt, the principle and practice of the right to bear arms is not in question.
Ed.: Yeah, because fishing and hunting is synonymous with keeping and bearing arms. I'm sure crime victims say "If only I had a fishing pole, I could have defended myself!" |

The Ohio legislature is on the verge of approving one of the country's most wide-reaching bills allowing concealed firearms in places that serve alcohol, including bars and stadiums.
Lawmakers who support the measure argue that Ohio is merely catching up to 42 other states that already allow concealed carry permit holders to tote their firearms in booze-pouring establishments. But that's not the whole story.
No two state laws are the same. Some allow it in restaurants but not bars. Others prohibit guns in stadiums. Some block firearms in nightclubs. Some states have no law addressing the issue at all, making it legal by default. |

The gun rights group, The Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance, is taking aim at Republicans in the Minnesota Senate for not taking up a bill that would change when it's legal for a person to shoot someone in self defense.
The Minnesota House already passed the bill and supporters were lobbying the Senate to pass it as well. The Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance sent out an action alert today that says the Senate has decided to not take up the bill this session. |

The duo lost the getaway vehicle at one point, as it traveled along Taylor Road. But they quickly caught up with them and the suspects pulled over, police said.
Still on the phone with the dispatcher, the witness told her that he'd tracked them down. "Actually, they're right here. I got 'em," the excited witness told the dispatcher
One of the suspects got of the vehicle and then walked toward the witness's car. That's when the witness got out of his car, pulled a pistol from his pocket and held it at his side for self defense, he said. |

Authorities are investigating what led to an apparent self-defense shooting that killed one man on Saturday night.
Denver Police say officers were called to a shooting in the 5500 Block of Xanadu Street at 9:39 p.m. When they arrived, they found a 54-year-old man who had been shot. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
According to homicide detectives, there was an argument between the man and the suspect, who both lived at the house, before the shooting. They say the suspect shot the man in self-defense. |

Sunday's editorial states that a concealed carry law is "hardly a pressing issue for Wisconsin" and "more of a distraction." I wonder if the 14,000 victims of violent crime in Wisconsin every year, per FBI statistics, would agree with your casual dismissal of their suffering.
As for your call for significant training, the Wisconsin law is not being created in a vacuum. There is an abundance of evidence from across the country that training, or lack of it, does not affect the safety of the public. |

You can learn a lot from the opinion of the Oregon Supreme Court in the case it decided Thursday concerning concealed handgun licenses.
The court agreed with trial courts in Jackson and Washington counties, and with the Oregon Court of Appeals, that Oregon sheriffs must not refuse to issue CHLs to people who also hold medical marijuana cards.
One thing you are reminded of in a footnote unrelated to the main arguments of the case is that under the state constitution, individuals in Oregon have the right to possess firearms for defense of self and property. It also says that except for some persons including minors and felons, people do not violate the law by carrying a firearm openly in a belt holster. |

In early May, Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano discussed the possibility of a terrorist striking within the United States to avenge Osama bin Laden, taken out by U.S. Navy SEALS in Pakistan.
"One source of concern is what is called 'the lone wolf,'" she said in a CBS News interview. "And a sole actor, who's not in contact with anyone that's very difficult to prevent."
"Difficult to prevent indeed," said Snyder. "That's practically an admission that officials may be unable to prevent such a lone wolf attack. That's why an armed citizenry now is more needed than ever. |

The Wisconsin Constitution safeguards our right to bear arms, while Wisconsin law provides the privilege to drive if we meet all requirements. Rights and the privileges are not equal.
The Constitutional Carry bill doesn't include a permit process and fee. It does require background checks and training, perhaps a hunter safety class.
Under no circumstances should law-abiding citizens be required to go through a permit process. This is just another way to register guns. |

An Ohio bill to allow concealed weapons in bars and other places that serve alcohol is close to becoming law.
Gun rights advocates claim it's about time for the law to be passed while opponents are calling for more deliberation on the topic.
The proposed legislation that could soon be on Gov. John Kasich's desk would allow people with concealed carry permits to bring their firearms to businesses with a Class C liquor license including bars, restaurants, nightclubs and stadiums.

First, "constitutional carry" is a misnomer. The 2nd Amendment is not absolute. That's why felons and the mentally ill can't legally own firearms. It's also why, as a general rule, private citizens can't own machine guns or bazookas or silencers. There simply is no "constitutional right" to carry a concealed firearm under any and all circumstances.
Second, it strikes me as being absurd to legally allow someone to carry a concealed weapon without some basic assurance that they know how to use it. After all, you wouldn't take someone who has never driven a car and send them out on the Interstate at rush hour! |
