"I am in receipt of your May 17 letter to Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, in response to my column about the National Rifle Association and its collusion with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. (See 'With Friends Like The NRA ...' http://www.jpfo.org/smith/smith-friends-like-nra.htm ). I thank you for taking the time and going to the effort of expressing your concerns, but I'm afraid you have some misconceptions about the nature of individual rights in general and the individual right to own and carry weapons in particular." ... |

"Other gun bloggers ... have covered the outrageous (and criminal) police harassment of open carry activists in Dickson City, PA. The police thuggery eventually led to the arrest of a man who had broken no laws, and the confiscation of his entirely legal firearm."
"... The reason I am writing about it today is to respond to this editorial piece, 'Big difference in right v. smart.'" ...
"... the writer seems to be asserting that 'sure, you have the right to keep and bear arms ... but you oughtn't do it, because it upsets people.' Are we to believe that the exercise of a right is . . . wrong, if said exercise makes people uncomfortable? This editor would have been a big help in the desegregation movement in the 60's, eh?" ... |

"Sure! I know what the bumper sticker says: 'The Second Amendment Isn't About Duck Hunting.' But hunting of all gamefrom little pests and varmints to record-book big gameis more relevant to the Second Amendment than many people may appreciate."
"Hunting is just one of the many individual legal purposes for which firearms possession and use are guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the US Constitutionand the constitutions of most of the individual states."
"But thats not the only reason it has a special connection to the right to keep and bear arms."
"Perhaps the confusion has arisen because of the chicanery of anti-gun politicians ..." ... |

"The next time you look at the American Flag waving proud and free over at the courthouse ... you may very well ask yourself this question."
"How did this all come about, and what lets it endure?" ...
"To the amazement of our adversaries, those who oppose or disagree are allowed to speak freely within our borders, as well as everyone else. Through this we learn rather than to silence. Then we can write about it, walk with our head up with equality, trade freely and go home and pray to our god."
"And when we get home, we can be secure."
"Why? Because behind every kitchen door, under a cash register, near a night table or another quick and handy place lies the reason. Plain and simple, we are armed to the last man." ... |

"If you have yet to visit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, I encourage you make it part of your plans on your next trip to Washington, D.C."
"Dedicated by President George H.W. Bush in October 1991, this memorial provides an experience as solemn and moving as visiting any of the other, better-known monuments here in the nation's capital."
"Having been responsible for the police department of Indiana's second-largest city during my 12 years as mayor of Fort Wayne, I was particularly moved by seeing the names of over 14,000 police officers killed in the line of duty - officers who took it upon themselves to protect and serve communities all across America. A few of these names from my hometown were well-known by me personally." ... |

"Sometimes I have to wonder about a few organizations that purport to represent those of us who hunt. Do they advance in public discourse an enlightened rationale for the continuation of sport hunting, one that a reasonable hunter or non-hunter might support? Or do they cavalierly dismiss us as dunderheads, incapable of rational thought or displaying concern for others ..."

"'I'm not going to permit the case to turn into a media show for either side,' said Brooklyn federal judge Jack Weinstein. 'I see no reason to have the mayor here.'"
"Bloomberg had hoped to take the stand next month against Jay Wallace, owner of Adventure Outdoors, which allegedly illegally sold guns later used by thugs in New York." ... |

From the citys point of view, he doesn't add anything to your case.'" "What about from Jay Wallace's point of view? Might it add anything to his case? Or are we being told there'd be no benefit to a cross examination?"

"As we reported in today's press release, Tarrant County College (TCC) in Fort Worth, Texas, has banned students from wearing empty gun holsters as part of a protest against regulations and laws that prevent concealed carry license holders from carrying their guns on campus. Meant as a powerful metaphor for what these students see as being left defenseless under these regulations, this form of protest took place on campuses across the country this April. According to the organization that coordinated the event, Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, the protest involved 3,800 students from 600 campuses nationwide." ... |

Hernandez was booked into the Starr County Jail on Thursday and released on $5,000 bond.
District attorney's investigator Carlos Delgado said the girl had complained about the incident and it was forwarded to law enforcement.
Hernandez was unavailable at the La Grulla police department, which referred calls to Mayor Oscar Gonzalez. The mayor did not immediately return a call for comment. |
