Kate Wool, a Fairbanks artist and gun-safety advocate, launched a provocative Instagram series this week featuring some of the nearly 100 portraits she made around Alaska of students and others wearing targets as a way to bring attention to the epidemic of school shootings.
She said she began posting in response to last week's school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas, and will continue to post if other mass shootings occur.
"I posted those 10 (portraits) this weekend specifically for those 10 who died in Santa Fe," she said. "As time goes on, I hope I don't have to post any more."
"A lot of the people were very upset that the kids had targets on them," she said. "Which of course was the point."

Lock up your guns.
That is the most effective gun control measure, and holds more promise for actually reducing mass shootings at schools than any other idea on the table.
After last weeks school shooting in Santa Fe, the conversation turned to Texas lax gun regulation. But not one of the additional gun control laws advocates seek -- short of an all-out firearms confiscation and ban would have stopped the 10 murders carried out by a 17-year-old student apparently smarting over a romantic rebuff.
In the meantime, those of us who are legal, responsible gun owners have an obligation to keep our firearms from being used illegally and irresponsibly. |

A recent high-speed chase through Dearborn, in which a man fired an AR-15 rifle from a moving car before killing himself, could have been avoided if someone had alerted authorities to the man's distress, the city's police chief said Thursday.
"I believe someone knew there was a crisis going on in his life," Dearborn police Chief Ronald Haddad said of Ruben Salinas, who on May 9 led police on a four-mile chase through Dearborn as he fired his rifle at his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend before pulling into an Oakwood Hospital parking lot and fatally shooting himself.
"If someone had have told police this guy was going through a crisis, maybe something could have been done to prevent this," Haddad said. |

The increased calls for gun control may be prompting more Michigan residents to purchase firearms and learn how to use them.
Its a cycle thats played out several times: After a high-profile mass shooting, theres an outcry by some for legislation they say would make it more difficult for bad actors to purchase guns and then firearm sales spike.
Firearms instructor Rick Ector said hes seeing a rush of women signing up for training.
For six years, Ector has provided free firearms training to women at Top Gun Shooting Sports, and he said theres been a steady increase of participants. This year, a record 700 women from ages 12 to 87 participated in the May 20 event, breaking last years record of 600 trainees. |

It sounds impossible: Pick up a rifle, aim it at a target 33 feet away, and try to hit a bullseye the size of a period on a 12-point Times New Roman font.
Jaden Thompson, 17, can do it. The Normal West student is among the best young shooters in the country. To get there, Jaden has cut back on sugar and caffeine to stabilize her shot. She works out to build up her cardio and core strength. Shes spent hours and hours practicing at the range.
Its just you when youre on the gun. Its no one else. Its about very extreme focus, which I really enjoy, said Jaden, who lives in Bloomington.
My biggest fear is that if you give them an inch, theyll take a foot, he said.

Speaking on CNN, two of the ubiquitous Parkland students plastered across Americas TV screens by the media described the NRA as child murderers. Not only did the host let the incredibly malicious smear slide unchallenged, CNN was more than happy to push the narrative, running the headline: Shooting survivor calls NRA child murderers after the segment aired. Countless anti-gun protesters given a megaphone by the establishment media were allowed to make similarly outlandish accusations, generally without being challenged.
Indeed, after the Parkland shooting as usual, carried out in a gun-free zone where law-abiding citizens are disarmed by law it was open season on the NRA. |

Why is it so hard to comprehend this concept? Just take away the guns, and our children won't get killed.
Is money more important than our children's lives? The National Rifle Association and the antiquated Second Amendment should not take priority over these innocent lives.
I am a members[sic] of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and I am very proud of my ancestry and heritage and patriots that fought for my freedom, but that was then and this is now. |

A fatal shooting early Thursday in Liberty-Eylau appears to be a case of self-defense, an official with Bowie County Sheriff's Office said.
The sheriff's office received a phone call at 5:29 a.m. Thursday from a woman who identifed herself as Tonya Barnett, 40, of Texarkana, Texas. Barnett reportedly told deputies she had been assaulted by her boyfriend and had shot him, said Capt. Jeff Neal, BCSO chief deputy. |

Parkland survivor David Hogg currently one of the nations most outspoken, anti-gun advocates is making headlines yet again. Hes unsuccessfully called for boycotts of Fox News host Laura Ingram and then BlackRock and Vanguard but why let those failures keep him down if at first and second times you dont succeed Hogg clearly believe you should try again. This time hes calling for the boycott and a die in of Publix supermarkets tomorrow (Friday, May 25, 2018), because the central-Florida based grocer supported Rep. Adam Putnam, an NRA-endorsed candidate, in the states gubernatorial election. His tweet says hes going to be crashing his local stores but invites others to join at other locations. |

A man charged in a fatal shooting inside a Gentilly townhome in 2016 was acquitted of manslaughter after a one-day judge trial last week.
Henry Wilson was charged with killing 26-year-old Billy Dukes on Jan 12. 2016, following what police said was "a verbal altercation that quickly turned violent."
Wilson, 31, maintained he shot Dukes in self-defense. He told police he arrived at the townhome he shared with relatives in the 4300 block of Sybil Street late after work. Once inside, he found a cousin had brought Dukes over. He said Dukes appeared high on pills. |

IP 9-2018-1 would alter the constitutional definition of firearm to include accessories and ammunition and empower the local sheriff to determine which firearms laws are constitutional.
Versions of the law have been proposed around the state this election season.
After supporters of the measure gathered enough signatures, and the county clerk certified them, Hummel was tasked with drafting the 10-word caption, 20-word question and 150-word summary. |

In recent months, the mainstream media and well-funded opposition groups have done their best to demonize the NRA and its industry partners. In particular, these groups have organized campaigns targeted at millennials in an effort to indoctrinate them into believing that the NRA works against their interests.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The NRA, through its many advocacy programs, fights for principles that are intuitively appealing to millennials. By working to preserve the Second Amendment, the NRA provides options in self-defense, hunting and sport shooting. |

Wanting to protect the lives of children is neither liberal nor conservative, but those who swallow the NRA Kool-Aid like to paint it in those terms. Its nothing more than a failure of rational thought, or else a cynical attempt to re-direct the conversation. A red herring.
If something is causing great harm, rational people take steps to reduce or eliminate the harm. Thats why we have traffic laws. Cars arent banned, but they are regulated to mitigate the damage their misuse can cause.
Sensible gun laws do save lives. When assault rifles were banned from 1994 to 2004, mass murders declined. When the ban was allowed to expire, mass murders increased. |

To no ones surprise, the new president of the National Rifle Association blamed pop culture for the mass shooting in Santa Fe, Texas that killed 10. But, interestingly, the NRAs president is the same man who was hired to advise on and promote a Call of Duty game thats among the biggest sellers in video gamings biggest-selling franchise.
Oliver North, a hero of conservatives for facilitating the sale of weapons to Iran more than 30 years ago, was a spokesman and advisor for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, an M-rated game that a lot of 17-year-olds cut school to buy and play on the Tuesday it launched in 2012. |

Anderson admitted to discharging a handgun and shooting Johnson about 12:33 p.m. Feb 22, 2017. He called 9-1-1 and informed the dispatcher what had just transpired and he told authorities where he was and awaited deputies and EMS to arrive at the scene of the shooting, on Lindo Trail, near Sunrise Lake. They found a single bullet near Andersons truck where he had fired from the front seat striking Johnson in the chest. Johnson was lying on the ground near an ATV he had used for transport.
Earl Gray, Andersons defense attorney, pursued a self defense argument that apparently convinced the jury that Anderson had no option but to shoot Johnson. |

Recently American Rifleman's Brian Sheetz posted a video about the Beretta 21A Bobcat , a pocket-sized semi-automatic .22 LR with a tip-up barrel for easy loading. The review caught my attention because I once owned the INOX (stainless steel slide) version that I traded away as part of some other gun purchase. In the course of his review, Brian refers to the Bobcat as a mouse gun. It's a term that's not heard all that often these days but it was in common circulation back in the mid 1990s when I began to research concealed-carry handguns in earnest. |

In an odd turn of events, the NRA wants Congress to censor school shooting news coverage, a Vice article reports. In addition to past solutions it's suggested, like arming teachers with guns or increasing security at school, this measure stands to affect media outlet's first amendment rights in a major way.
"It's time to put an end to this glorification of carnage in pursuit of ratings, because it's killing our kids," Colion Noir, a gun rights activist, said in an episode of NRA-TV, which he hosts. The video was posted online a little under one week after the recent school shooting Santa Fe, Texas where 10 were killed. |

Ohio bill HB 228 has passed out of the House Federalism and Interstate Relations Committe on a seven to three vote. The vote was along party lines, with seven Republicans voting for the bill and the three Democrats voting against the bill.
The Ohio legislature is looking to reform Ohio law on self-defense. Currently, Ohio appears to be the only state where the burden of proof in a self-defense case rests with the defender. When a person claims self-defense in Ohio, the defender has to prove that they acted in self-defense. |
