Rep. Ernest Wooton keeps threatening to revive his bill to allow guns on college campuses.
He shouldn't. Lifting gun prohibitions from colleges, universities and vocational-technical schools is a bad idea.
Rep. Wooton delayed a vote by the House May 12 in the face of opposition to the bill. He said then that he would bring House Bill 199 back up in two weeks, which would be this week. "I intend to stay with this bill," he told House members. Later, he told reporters that he lacked the votes that day because "the universities are lobbying the bill" to kill it. "It will come to a vote, I promise. I am a hard-headed son-of-a-gun." |

CRIMINALS are ditching fake guns because of a law that only allows them to be sold in bright colours.
Ministers believe the Violent Crime Reduction Act - brought in October - is forcing crooks to stop buying the imitation firearms.
The law states real-looking replicas must be pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple or be transparent. |

A proposed change in federal gun rules would allow people to carry concealed firearms in national parks and wildlife refuges in states where such weapons are permitted. The proposal is now open for public comment.
The change, promoted by the U.S. Department of the Interior and some U.S. senators, would cause national parks and refuges to adopt the same concealed gun laws as those governing similar public lands in the states where they are located. With concealed firearms banned in North Carolina state parks by state law, gun rules would likely stay the same in parts of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. |

Behind the 4-H livestock tent at the Chesapeake Jubilee last weekend, a new 4-H club banner flapped in the breeze sharing space with the traditional livestock and baking club exhibitors.
The Virginia Beach Sharpshooters 4-H Shooting and Education Club, formed last November, hung their banner and signs and offered air rifle target practice inside a parked horse trailer to raise awareness and funds. Its mission is to teach handling and life skills to area youth through the local hunting and shooting sports community.
"If we don't spread our passion about our sport to our kids, then it will be lost," said Tim Putnam, who started the club with wife Michelle. "We've got to get them in the woods and knowledgeable about the outdoors." |

Authorities say they don't plan to charge a man who shot another man who tried to hit his estranged wife with his truck.
The coroner's office told WSPA-TV that 36-year-old Kenneth Ross Jr. of Greer was shot several times early Saturday morning and died at the hospital.
Deputies say Ross confronted his estranged wife and a male friend at her Spartanburg home and tried to hit the woman with his truck, but struck her car instead. Authorities say Ross then started coming toward his estranged wife. The man got his gun and ordered Ross to stop. |

No guns allowed.
The Police Department has been querying businesses to see where people are allowed to carry weapons, and where it is prohibited by company policy.
The query follows an incident in which a dozen customers at Old Country Buffet were questioned by police for openly carrying guns. One person was detained and his gun confiscated. |

Butler, Missouri - Salesmen at a Missouri car dealership are not just kicking in a free CD player or airconditioner: they are offering a free handgun with every purchase.
Until the end of the month, car buyers at Max Motors in Butler will have a choice - $250 (about R1 900) towards either a gun purchase or fuel.
General manager Walter Moore said that so far most buyers had chosen the gun, adding that he suggests they opt for a semi-automatic model "because it holds more rounds". |

The Libertarian Party has nominated former Congressman Bob Barr as its candidate for president for the 2008 election. "I'm sure we will emerge here with the strongest ticket in the history of the Libertarian Party," Barr stated in his victory speech shortly after being selected as the Party's nominee. "I want everybody to remember that we only have 163 days to win this election. We cannot waste one single day."
Ed.: As many of you already know, Bob is dependably pro-gun, unlike some other candidates who profess to "support the Second Amendment". |

Ever since he announced his gas-or-gun promotion a week ago, cars and trucks have been flying off the lot of Mark Muller’s dealership in Butler, Mo.
After all, who hasn’t heard of the stunt by now?
Get a $250 gas card or $250 toward the purchase of a handgun, if you buy a new or used car at Max Motors by the end of May.
It even made the papers in England.
But there’s a little more to the gimmick that’s brought all this attention to Muller’s GM, Ford and Chrysler dealership in the town of 4,200.
There’s the why of it that goes beyond the cheesy, un-PC attempt to pump up his sales numbers in a down economy. |

As expected, I heard an earful about my column last week on a new gun group that opposes the National Rifle Association's hard-line views and allegiance to the Republican Party. NRA loyalists from around the country sent me e-mails echoing the organization's claim that a small rival, the American Hunters & Shooters Association, is just a "front" for gun-control activists. They said that anything that weakens absolute Second Amendment freedom is a slippery slope that will lead to the nation being disarmed. I believe just the opposite is true -- and I think many gun owners realize it. |

Every time there's a highly publicized shooting, out go the cries for stricter gun-control laws, and it was no different with the recent slaying of Philadelphia Police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, in a letter to the state congressional delegation demanding re-enactment of the federal assault-weapon ban, said, "Passing this legislation will go a long way to protecting those who put their lives on the line every day for us. There is no excuse to do otherwise." Gun-control laws will not protect us from murderers. We need protection from the criminal-justice system politicians have created. Let's look at it. |

Fingerprints are considered to be among the most personal of information, and fingerprint databases created and proposed in the name of national security have generated much debate. ... Yet earlier this week, a measure creating a federal fingerprint registry totally unrelated to national security passed a U.S. Senate committee almost without notice. ... The fingerprint provisions are contained in a managers amendment that was hammered out by committee Chairman Chris Dodd, D-Conn, and Ranking Member Richard Shelby, R-Ala., on Monday and attached the next day to a broader housing bailout bill that had been scheduled for a comittee vote. Submitter's comment: Dodd -- Dodd -- haven't I seen that name somewhere before? |

A pair of binoculars is always on the ledge of a window that offers a view from Jay Wallace's office to the sales floor of Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna. He uses them to keep an eye on both customers and employees. "I'm proud of how I run my business," Wallace said. But on Tuesday he'll be in a New York courtroom, defending Adventure Outdoors against accusations that it is a "rogue" gun dealership that paid scant attention to whether weapons were sold only to those who could legally have them. A civil lawsuit contends Adventure Outdoors has helped fuel the so-called Iron Pipeline of firearms from the Southeast to New York. |

Sumbitter's note: This is a story that needs wide distribution. It turns out that the judge in the Miller case was a buddy of the Roosevelt administration, and virulently anti-gun. He single-handedly (if he was not directly conspiring with the FDR "revolution") structured the Miller case to come out the way it did in order to destroy the second amendment, that he disagreed with. The way the case was structured, no evidence by Miller *could* be presented. The story is in PDF format. This was a case of judicial activism at its very worst. |

On April 19th I attended my first on-site rifle training course. Ive had loads of pistol training but if youre in a gunfight a knife is better than nothing, a pistol is better than a knife, but a rifle is best to have. A rifle can reach out and touch someone and do so far more accurately than the other weapons.

While state law enforcement agencies have been vocal in opposing recent gun legislation proposals, some have criticized the Ohio Highway Patrol for not speaking up. The legislation is part of Senate Bill 184 and would allow registered handgun owners to carry unloaded firearms and ammunition in their vehicles. The National Rifle Association is pushing the proposal."All this does is provide another loophole for people to carry firearms in their cars," Dayton police union President Lt. Randy Beane said.
