Maybe Ill Take the Blame for Mass-Murder, but I Also Want the Credit for Lives Saved

I saw this on social media and in the news after a crazy man attacked an elementary school in Texas. The claim was that honest gun owners are responsible for murdering schoolchildren because we wouldnt give up our guns. That got me thinking. Maybe Ill take the blame for mass murder but then I also want credit for the many lives that ordinary gun owners save every day.

Lets sort through this argument of claims and counterclaims.

Supreme Court may soon loosen gun laws as nation reels from massacres

While the Supreme Court has been working behind closed doors on its first major Second Amendment opinion in more than a decade, three mass shootings have broken the country, including Tuesday's massacre of 19 schoolchildren in Texas.

Closed off from public view, the justices are penning opinions and dissents in a dispute that targets one concealed carry law in New York that is more than a century old. A narrow ruling could impact only a handful of states with similar laws, but a more expansive ruling could open a new chapter in constitutional challenges to gun safety laws across the country.

The military-style rifles have such features as high-capacity magazines, pistol grips, flash suppressors, barrel shrouds and the like that are designed to allow a shooter to spray bullets quickly and indiscriminately into a crowd. These are not components one needs in self-defense, not the essentials required for target practice at the local shooting range, not an asset to the average deer hunter. They are, however, the common tools of mass shooters. Its been estimated that about one-quarter of such incidents have involved individuals armed with assault weapons.

Tuesdays tragic massacre at a Texas elementary school brought gun control back to the forefront of American politics. It also drew renewed attention to a Supreme Court case where the justices will likely chart the first major expansion of the Second Amendments protections in more than a decade. How the court decides that case could upend whatever steps lawmakers take to address this tragedyand the broader crisis of gun violence that it represents.

The case, New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, involves a legal challenge to New Yorks method for distributing concealed carry permits.

Any weapon that is capable of firing multiple rounds in rapid succession should be outlawed to anyone other than military, law enforcement or security personnel. No one in a civil society should have such a weapon, for its sole designed purpose is to kill. For hunting and self-defense, there should be no need for anything more than a single-shot pistol or rifle.

Asian Americans who experienced increased acts of racism at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic were more likely to acquire firearms and ammunition for self-defense, according to a study by researchers at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) and the University of Michigan (U-M).

According to lead study author Tsu-Yin Wu, professor of nursing and director of EMU's Center for Health Disparities Innovation and Studies, the study titled Examining racism and firearm-related risks among Asian Americans in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic stems from the authors noticing hate crimes among Asian Americans were becoming more prevalent and saw an opportunity to provide more education in this area.

Being an advocate for individual rights and civil liberties can be difficult. When terrorists attack, when the economy fails, when a pandemic strikes, and yes, when evil visits schools , the natural instinct is to demand security above all else.

So, after each tragedy, I easily understand the reaction that soon fills my social media feeds: We have to do something. There should be laws restricting guns so they dont get in the hands of these deranged murderers.

The logical impulse for those of us who defend private gun ownership is to avoid such discussions altogether, to let the passions settle. But on the contrary, its more important than ever to present our position with clear-eyed resolve.

Trust me when I tell you that most NRA types have never bothered to read that passage or the debates between their precious Founding Fathers to understand that it was those state militias, which would supply long-arms and cannon in times of war for those citizens who otherwise maintained rifles for hunting and small arms for self-defense, that was their primary concernnot some mass murderer in future years walking around with high tech weapons ready to kill his neighbors!

KS: How easy is it to buy a gun in Missouri and Kansas? These are the laws in each state

Missouri and Kansas are two of the nations most firearm-friendly states. Both states have comparatively weak laws regulating guns. The states rank 47th and 45th in the nation respectively according to the Giffords Law Center, which advocates for gun safety reform.

The restrictions enforced on gun buyers are minimal in the Kansas City area, and state laws protect the use of firearms in certain situations. Missouri even prevents state and local law enforcement officials from enforcing certain federal gun laws. Heres a look at the regulations that apply to these weapons on both sides of the state line.

A Lincoln County man charged with first-degree murder will no longer face those charges.

The district attorney dropped those charges just two weeks before it was set for trial.

Freddie Seamster said he shot and killed his neighbor Lucas Goss last July in self-defense. Now, after seeing new evidence, the DA agrees.

"He was on his property. He had no reason to believe he was not in jeopardy at that point," said Allan Grubb, DA for Pottawatomie and Lincoln counties.

Name-calling, blame-shifting, and calls for gun restrictions fill social media in the publics quest to find a solution. But to protect the most precious, innocent lives among us, parents must educate their kids at home.

It is clear now from the long list of school shootings in recent years that families cant trust government schools, in particular, to bring their children or teachers home safely at the end of the day. The same institutions that punish students for misgendering people and hide curriculum from parents are simply not equipped to safeguard your children from harm.

He explained even with the constitutional right to bear arms there are still different levels of gun restrictions that can be passed in the U.S.

There's a lot of room for regulation," he said. "A lot of things can be done here that are being done in other countries: banning assault rifles, putting restrictions on how a person can carry a firearm; all of that can be done here.

Several countries took different actions to address gun violence after mass shootings.

Sen. Chuck Grassley is calling on his Washington, D.C., colleagues to bring his EAGLES Act to a vote.

Named for the mascot at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where there was a shooting in 2018, the bill would allow the Secret Service to train law enforcement to identify potential threats.

Grassley said Wednesday on his weekly press call that he's frustrated with Congress's inability to work together on a bipartisan bill.

"Schools should be safe places for students and educators," Grassley said. "I'm not saying the EAGLES Act is the final answer, but at least it's something we ought to be able to get done yesterday if you can understand my frustration with it."

State lawmakers banned the sale or purchase of gun magazines carrying more than 10 cartridges and outlawed assault weapons, semiautomatic firearms with features such as detachable magazines and forward pistol grips that make them easier to fire repeatedly. The state also prohibited the sale of handguns and most long guns to anyone under 21.

California also does not allow private citizens to carry guns openly in public and bans carrying concealed handguns without a license from local law enforcement, which are unavailable in most populous counties. And so-called red flag laws allow police, family members and coworkers to obtain court orders removing firearms from those who are dangerous to themselves or others.

A day after a gunman killed 19 young students and two adults at an elementary school in Texas, Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy called once again for legislative leaders to send him a package of new gun regulations but also to "immediately" post every Republican proposal to loosen the state's strict gun laws for a vote.

"Let's put every gun bill up so the people of New Jersey can see in no uncertain terms who supports gun safety and who wants New Jersey's streets and communities to be flooded with guns," Murphy said at a press conference in Trenton, surrounded by gun-control advocates. "At the same time, let's see who the gun lobby banks with their blood money."

President Biden on Wednesday called for more gun control after a mass shooting at a Texas elementary school left 19 children and two adults dead, arguing in a White House address that the second amendment is not absolute.

Biden asked when in Gods name will we do what needs to be done about the amount of carnage that goes on in this country, as he pushed for what he called common sense gun control laws in the wake of one of the nations worst shootings.

The call for common sense responses to this plague of violence is welcomed, but common sense also requires a common understanding of the realities of gun ownership and gun control.

Take the AR-15. Efforts to ban this model already have failed in the courts on constitutional grounds, though litigation is continuing on that issue. In 2008, the Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller, recognizing the Second Amendment as encompassing an individual right to bear arms.

The AR-15 is the most popular gun in America and the number is continuing to rise rapidly, with one AR-15 purchased in every five new firearms sales.

The past 24 hours have allowed us to learn far more about the killer and the circumstances surrounding his deplorable act of violence. Unlike anti-gun-rights politicians including Joe Biden, who quickly exploited this horror to push an agenda aimed at diminishing the Second Amendment and shifting blame to millions of gun owners, we waited for more information.

If there is blame beyond that of the killer, it must be shared by political leaders whose policies have turned our public schools into soft targets, and by self-appointed activists and school boards that have resisted school resource officer programs, opposed and prohibited programs that train teachers and staff to provide armed first response in an emergency, ...

After Tuesday's tragedy in Uvalde, a national conversation about guns is taking center stage as both gun control and gun rights activists speak out.

From heated demands for legislators to enact more gun regulations to calls to protect Second Amendment rights, people are looking towards solutions after an 18-year-old shot and killed 19 students and two teachers at Robb Elementary school.

During a press conference in Uvalde on Wednesday afternoon, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke interrupted to accuse Governor Greg Abbott of not doing enough to stop gun violence in the state.

The Utah County Sheriffs Office is training educators on ways to respond in a shooter situation through a multiweek Teachers Academy.

In some situations, the training is aimed to help de-escalate a situation before things get bad.

Utah County Sheriff Mike Smith said theres much more to the class than just focusing on guns.

The national average is three minutes for an officer to get to an active shooter situation. Three minutes. So what are you gonna do in three minutes? said Smith.

Today, we take our first in-depth look at AMMO, Inc. (NASDAQ:POWW). The stock of this ammunition manufacturer has hit the skids despite impressive revenue growth and is also nicely profitable. Not a well-thought-of sector at the moment given the recent Texas school mass shooting. But from an investment perspective, is it time to buy the dip? We try to provide the answer to that question via the analysis below.

According to WGO, 30 percent of Texas schools have armed teachers and staff; However, Robb Elementary, where 19 students and two adults were killed, does not appear to be one. Robb Elementary is among most Texas schools subject to the Federal Gun-Free Zone Act, which prohibits concealed carry on the premises, according to the schools own rules and codes of conduct.

Thirty percent of Texass schools enjoy armed protection by teachers and staff, and this killer did not choose those schools as his target, said WGO Executive Director Thomas Leager. He chose Robb Elementary for a reason and that is because it was unprotected.

Rather than focusing on these tangible entry points for potentially useful legislation, instead of proposing ideas on better identifying shooters before they act, instead of thinking about how schools could be structurally safer, instead of debating the efficacy of putting more cops in schools and none of these are panaceas, mind you Senate Democrats were busy dunking on Republicans for failing to support bills that have absolutely zero to do with mass shootings.
