A Grand Rapids judge has sided with gun rights activists, deeming it unlawful for local event venues to have weapons policies that outright ban the lawful carry of firearms.
Kent County Circuit Judge Joseph Rossi determined the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority's weapons policy contradicts state firearms laws, and thus their enforcement is unlawful.
The decision, which sided with Michigan Open Carry Inc. and Michigan Gun Owners Inc., was made Friday, May 26, during a hearing on a motion for summary disposition.
"Hopefully, my ruling inspires them to adjust their policy," Rossi said. "The court disagrees with the language ... I'll let the CAA determine its policy, as long as it fits the law." |

It started with a normal exchange at a common check-in counter before a typical flight at Fort Lauderdale's airport:
"I have an unloaded firearm in a locked case to declare," I said.
The ticket agent matter-of-factly asked for identification and typed on her computer.
"To Chicago," she said. |

While much of the nations attention has been fixated on the latest media-manufactured melodrama in Washington, D.C., the NRA has been hard at work in state capitals across the country to improve state gun laws that impact the everyday lives of gun owners. Even though we were barely a quarter of the way through 2017 at press time, the NRA has already piled up an impressive list of state-level victories in the New Year. |

Is the .40 S&W still a good round? The short answer of course is yes. I would agree.
There have long been questions regarding the reason the .40 Smith & Wesson cartridge has been losing popularity, even though as of as late as 2011, some 65% of American law enforcement was carrying a pistol chambered in the round. |

We all owe Elmer Keith a debt of gratitude; he saw the need for several improvements in the cartridges of his day, and went at it like a charging rhino to see them brought to fruition. The .357 Mag. was his brainchild, as was the .41 Mag.; the .334 OKH (ONeill-Hopkins-Keith) cartridge had a direct and irrefutable influence on the development of the .338 Win. Mag.
But among his works, the .44 Rem. Mag. ranks among the finest. Keith had a penchant for handguns that improved upon the existing cartridges and their performance. The .44 Spl.introduced in the early 20th century and still a very useful cartridgewas the basis for the development, as Keith began experimenting with higher pressure loads. |

The head of a national gun rights group contends the citys controversial gun tax has done little to curb shootings in Seattle.
The 2015 measure, which placed a $25 assessment on each modern firearm and up to 5 cents on each round of ammunition sold by retailers in the city, was billed as a gun violence tax but Alan Gottlieb, executive vice president of the Second Amendment Foundation, says it hasnt done anything to stem the rising tide of criminal gun use in the city after looking at police statistics. |

The instructor popped off a few rounds with a .22 semiautomatic rifle, first with a silencer and then without, before asking his loaded question.
By a show of hands, did anyone think that was silent? Knox Williams, president and executive director of the American Suppressor Association, asked reporters gathered for his demonstration.
Silencers, so-called because they suppress the sound of firearms, are at the center of a heated debate as pro-gun lawmakers hope to advance legislation to make them easier to get. |

Information collected by the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) indicates an unprecedented surge in the number of concealed carry permits, with the largest one-year increase on record occurring between May 2016 and May 2017.
The CPRC tracks permit numbers across the country and publishes an annual report on concealed carrying in the United States. As of late last year, the number of Americans with carry permits hit the 15 million mark, and the current estimate of permittees is at 15.7 million almost double the number from 2011. |

Gov. Greg Abbott on Friday visited a shooting range to sign a bill into law that significantly reduces the cost to get a license to carry a handgun, making Texas one of the states with the lowest fee in the nation.
"The right to bear arms is something that is synonymous with the state of Texas. We are proud to expand the right to bear arms by lowering the cost of what you have to pay in order to get a license to carry," Abbott said. "Texans' ability to bear arms is going to be even bolder today than it's ever been before." |

I am amazed at what makes national news nowadays. Just moments before sitting down to pen this column, Im watching and reading about some guy who broke a Plinko record on the television game show, The Price is Right. Whatever, I digress.
Ill tell you what ought to be making national news. Our great friend Alan Gottlieb over at the Second Amendment Foundation and Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (of which I am a proud sitting member of the Board of Directors) is out in Washington State just knocking the gun-grabbers back on their heels. |

On Wednesday, May 24, 2017, Chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources Rob Bishop (R-UT) introduced H.R. 2620, the "Lawful Purpose and Self Defense Act." This bill would remove ATF's authority to use the "sporting purposes" clauses in federal law in ways that could undermine the core purpose of the Second Amendment. Under Chairman Bishops legislation, all lawful purposes including self-defense would have to be given due consideration and respect in the administration of federal firearms law.

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck warns that national reciprocity for concealed carry will be a disaster in California.
In a May 25 op-ed published by the Los Angeles Times, Beck wrote, The mere presence of more concealed weapons on California streets would make police work here much more hazardous.
Beck did not mention, however, that police officers around the nation support gun rights over gun control and specifically support concealed carry for law-abiding citizens. |

A tax is the best form of offense. At least, that seems to be the growing consensus within the weird and desperate enclaves of Americas ever-creative gun control movement. Having seen public opinion swing strongly behind the Second Amendmentand having watched in horror as a majority on the Supreme Court affirmed that English words have meaningthe restrictionists and the tut-tutters have been forced to focus their attentions on an underrated weapon against the right to bear armsmoney. If you cant ban them, bill em instead. |

In the Los Angeles Times, David Savage reports that in Sessions v. Binderup, a Second Amendment case that is among the cert petitions the court considered at its private conference yesterday, the Justice Department under Trump has embraced the same position that was adopted under President Obama: to defend strict enforcement of a long-standing federal law that bars convicted criminals from ever owning a gun, even when their crimes did not involve violence. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
As I have stood in the crosshairs of those who target Second Amendment freedoms, I've realized that firearms are not the only issue. No, it's much, much bigger than that. I've come to understand that a cultural war is raging across our land, in which, with Orwellian fervor, certain acceptable thoughts and speech are mandated. Charlton Heston |
