Some parents are turning to bulletproof backpacks in the wake of the tragic Uvalde, Texas, school shooting.
Mike de Geus, the founder and CEO of Leatherback Gear, explained how bulletproof backpacks work during a Thursday appearance on NewsNations Prime.
Designed by a former Secret Service agent, Leatherback Gear transforms backpacks into bulletproof vests. Children can protect themselves during a shooting by holding the backpack up to deflect bullets. |
It is easy to kill children in Texas ( and most places) but not deer. Wildlife more protected.

Well shut my mouth, pick my jaw off the floor and call me stupid but this I never knew. I guess hunters know this. Who goes hunting with an AR15 first of all because there would be nothing left to eat or frame but all these hunters who say they need the 2nd amendment for hunting and by the way when was the last time you saw a deer or squirrel or bear roaming on aisle 3 of Walmart or in a classroom?
Texas Hunter Education Requirements
Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete a Hunter Education Training Course. Proof of certification or deferral is required to be on your person while hunting. Minimum age of certification is 9 years and cost is $15. |

A total of 19 children and two adults were killed by a lone gunman at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, an incident that has reignited a national debate on gun control policies.
U.S. Senate Democrats spent Tuesday working to place enhanced background check legislation on the legislative calendar, though there was no official vote scheduled. |

Ohio is weeks away from its constitutional carry law going into effect, according to NBC 2.
Governor Mike DeWine introduced a 17-point plan to reduce gun violence in 2019 after crowds chanted for him to do something following the Oregon District mass shooting. The plan included expanding background checks, early intervention and increased penalties for people who shouldn't have guns. But the bill expired last year without any action from state lawmakers. |

The Texas school attack is reverberating across the nation and Minnesota is no exception. But the prospects remain dim for gun control reforms in the state's politically divided legislature.
Republican lawmakers and candidates who gathered to launch their 2022 campaign effort Thursday said voters are more interested in pocketbook issues like inflation than they are in firearms reforms.
"As far as gun control, we obviously already have some of the strictest laws in the country," House Majority Leader Kurt Daudt told reporters.

Oulson was killed, but in February, a jury found that it was in self-defense and Reeves was not guilty on all charges.
The outcome of the trial was like a punch that knocked me out it was just so unexpected and justice was not served," said Oulson.
But to make a positive out of her despair, Nicole is starting the "Oulson Family Foundation." The goal is to raise money to help children directly and indirectly affected by gun violence by providing medical assistance, counseling, and college tuition. |

Deranged people cause very few gun deaths unless you assume anyone not a soldier or police officer killing someone else with a gun is de facto deranged. Suggestions to arm teachers and make schools fortresses are equally specious opportunities to kill with guns are too legion to remediate in the home, at the mall or a restaurant, a church, or just in the street. Very few of the 45,222-gun deaths in our country last year were mass shootings or self-defense (about one-half of 1 percent). |

Traditionally, social engineering has been practiced through taxation: Introduce it to guns. Tax gun sales heavily, just as we tax liquor and tobacco. But exempt gun clubs, where weapons are kept safely, as happens in many countries.
Then tax ammunition equally severely, but exempt ammunition used at ranges and in controlled gun-sport environments.
Draw a firm line between sporting weapons and automatic weapons of mass destruction, which is what they are. A quail hunter in Georgia shouldnt have a problem applying for and getting a tax exemption on a shotgun and ammunition. |

For many, the shooting has heightened an already pervasive anxiety as crime rates have spiked in neighborhoods across the city. Major crimes have increased citywide by 39%, compared to this time last year, and children and teens have been caught in the crossfire of gun violence.
At the same time, Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD officials announced this week there has been a dramatic increase in the number of "dangerous instruments" confiscated at schools since students returned from remote learning: Tasers, knives, pepper spray and at least 20 guns have been seized since September, officials said. The mayor urged parents to be more vigilant in order to stop the flow of weapons into schools. |

The Superior Court of Lewis County upheld Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidlers fine and cease-and-desist order against Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network, Inc., for illegally acting as an insurer in Washington state.
In March 2020, Kreidler ordered Armed Citizens to stop acting as an insurer. Armed Citizens sells memberships that include self-defense insurance to cover bail and legal costs incurred in conjunction with using force against another person. In May 2020, Kreidler fined Armed Citizens $200,000 for law violations. Armed Citizens appealed both actions and an administrative law judge upheld Kreidlers actions, but amended the fine to $50,000 and ordered Armed Citizens to pay it by Dec. 7, 2020. |

Yet during much of Americas ongoing conversation about the root causes of gun violence, the makers of guns have typically escaped scrutiny. As a public health researcher, I find this odd, because evidence shows that the culture around guns contributes significantly to gun violence. And firearm manufacturers have played a major role in influencing American gun culture.
Thats beginning to change, particularly since the US$73 million settlement between the families of victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and the maker of the rifle used in the massacre. This may open the door for more lawsuits against firearm manufacturers. |

The Supreme Court could potentially expand second amendment rights as it takes a look at a New York law.
Currently, New York law requires people seeking a concealed carry license to show a proper cause.
In 2008, the Supreme Court held that the Second Amendment protects an individuals right to keep arms at home for self-defense.
Now a new case, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association vs. Bruen, questions whether handguns can be carried in public for self-defense. |

Before we even knew how the killer of 19 children and two adults at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, had obtained his guns, Sen. Chris Murphy was engaging in his customary performative emotionalism on the Senate floor, literally begging Republicans to "compromise."
Compromise on what exactly? Murphy has never once offered a single proposal that would have deterred any of these mass shooters. Literally minutes after his routine, Murphy was asked about the obvious mental illness prevalent among most of these shooters. "Spare me the bulls- about mental illness," the Connecticut senator responded, "ripping" the GOP. "We don't have any more mental illness than any other country in the world." |

Teachers have occasionally attacked gunmen, with some losing their lives or suffering injuries, but even a small handgun in trained hands is much more effective than approaching a shooter with a chair, pole, or even bare hands.
The federal program under which some commercial airline pilots carry guns, even though they themselves are largely protected in the cockpit, shows that arming responsible and trained individuals who are not law enforcement personnel is safe, and does not led to wrongful shootings, intentional or negligent.
Reportedly some 20 states already authorize teachers who have received special training to carry a gun in the classroom, so the idea is neither farfetched or untested. |
