"It was a life and death struggle Tuesday for three Wilmette (Ill.) men who came to the rescue of a teenaged girl who was under a savage attack by a former boyfriend. The attacker, a burly ex-wrestler, allegedly ran the girl over with his pick up truck before punching and kicking her nearly lifeless."

"Three neighbors witnessed the attack and, upon attempting to intervene, found that they were no match for the athletic 20-year old. According to published reports, one would-be rescuer, a 69 year old man, was severely beaten while another of the men was reportedly beaten and choked by the attacker before police could step in and save him from further harm." ...

A New Carlisle man is asking the Ohio Supreme Court to consider his challenge of the Miami County sheriff's denial of his application for a concealed weapon license.

"... [Sheriff Charles] Cox denied the application after a background check showed Harris was the subject of a five-year civil protection order issued in Greene County in December 2000. A civil protection order is one of the legal reasons to deny a concealed weapon license."

"The order against Harris was dismissed in late 2000 in favor of a consent decree that did not specifically prohibit Harris from possessing a weapon. The Miami County judge ruled � and the appeals court agreed � that Harris remains subject to the Greene County civil protection order."

University of Akron senior Joe Milano (Minerva, Ohio/Minerva HS) was named to the second team of the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV University Division Men's At-Large Team as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Thursday. District IV is comprised of colleges and universities in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee."

Police are warning women that carrying pepper spray in self-defence is still illegal.

Two girls - an American and German - have recently received cautions after the spray was found in their handbags.

One of the girls was trying to get into Koko's nightclub in Mornington Crescent, while the other was stopped and searched in the street.

Both said they carried it for their own protection and didn't realise it was an offence in this country.

Although widely available in America, pepper spray is classed as a firearm in the UK and possession carries a minimum sentence of five years.

A Camden Police spokeswoman said: "These girls have cautions and the incidents will boost our firearm statistics.
