We saw two young men kill innocent people this last month. Weve seen mass murder before. It isnt easy to look death in the face but it is dangerous to look away and pretend it couldnt happen again.

These are a few of the lessons we learned from mass murders in the US and around the world.

A bill that passed out of the Assembly on Thursday night would make the marketing of firearms to children and those not legally allowed to possess them a civil liability. AB 1594 would allow lawsuits against gun manufacturers based on their marketing, one of the few exemptions to a federal ban on such lawsuits. The bill is now in the hands of the Senate.

Brought by San Francisco Democrat Phil Ting, the bill is an attempt to ensure that gun manufacturers cant object in state court to lawsuits that target their marketing an argument Smith & Wesson made in a San Diego court last year.

But now Im wondering about the months ahead. Even in Florida, there will be the potential for violent protests, particularly if a decision comes out on Roe v. Wade. As always, I try to be a realist, not planning on the worst but also not burying my head in the sand. It doesnt do any harm to get in extra practice and continue to become more at ease with my weapon.

Yet I cant help wondering if the mindset Im developing is healthy. I dont want to live my life with a siege mentality. I dont want to wonder if Im sitting in the least or most vulnerable seat in a restaurant. I dislike the guidance for situational awareness, even though its for my own good.

I know a lot of people who have guns for a lot of legitimate reasons, like hunting, target practice, and self-defense. And they are good people who I respect. The government cant take guns away from people like that as long as the Second Amendment is part of the Constitution.

But Im tired of hearing about innocent people being slaughtered while theyre in grade school. worshiping, shopping. riding subways. etc. The Supreme Court has made clear that the Constitution permits reasonable regulations about the sale and possession of firearms.

Four years ago, when as now the nation was reeling from the horror of a mass school shooting, a retired Supreme Court justice suggested a radical solution: getting rid of the Second Amendment.

John Paul Stevens issued the call after 17 people were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., in February 2018. The attack prompted hundreds of thousands to demand action the next month to end gun violence at the March for Our Lives.

Former President Donald Trump repeated his support for a constitutional right to bear arms before his scheduled speech Friday at a National Rifle Association (NRA) event. Meanwhile, the Senate's top Republican, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, has signaled his openness to "a bipartisan solution that's directly related to the facts" in response to Tuesday's mass school shooting in Texas.

Tuscaloosa police arrested a woman Thursday afternoon after a road rage incident led to a shooting in a parking lot.

According to witnesses, Kayla Figgers pulled into a parking lot and confronted a man and his girlfriend, believing they had cut her off in traffic. Figgers reportedly pointed a gun at the man and he fired a weapon in return, hitting her vehicle.

A Tuscaloosa Police officer was in the parking lot at the time and heard the shots. The officer confronted the man and took him into custody. After investigating what happened, Figgers was taken into custody and charged with menacing. Her bond was set for $1,000.

America is still reeling after the unspeakably tragic mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas that left 19 children dead. In the aftermath, we're all understandably looking for answers. Yet many top Democrats are rallying around one gun control proposal that's actually a false solution.

Their idea is simple: Raise the age to buy a gun to 21. Most school shooters are teenagers, the argument goes, and you can't drink alcohol until age 21, so why can you buy an AR-15?

Without solicitation, U.S. Rep. Chris Jacobs made a statement Friday vastly in contrast with his party's recent stance when it comes to gun control in the United States.

"I want to be completely transparent of where I am in Congress," Jacobs said. "If an assault weapons ban bill came to the floor that would ban something like an AR-15, I would vote for it."

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine took time Friday morning to discuss gun violence and school safety, after a deadly shooting at a Texas elementary school shocked the nation.

The meeting held after the governor and his wife laid wreaths at 10:30 a.m. for veterans before Memorial Day Weekend took place as a change to Ohios gun laws loomed in June. The new constitutional carry law makes it legal for all Ohioans 21 and older to carry a handgun without a permit.

The Second Amendment is one of 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, collectively called the Bill of Rights. These amendments were written to protect individual Americans from tyrannical rule and include the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of speech, religion and press, and the Seventh Amendment, which proclaims the right of a trial by jury in civil cases. Other rights include the right to due process and freedom from cruel and unusual punishment.

The latest revelations about the police response to the deadly elementary school rampage in Uvalde, Texas, threaten to upend the drive to make gun control the central issue, as law enforcement's reluctance to engage the shooter could increase public reliance on self-defense.

The fact that the gunman responsible for this week's massacre in Uvalde, Texas, was able to buy two AR-15s days after his 18th birthday highlights how much easier it is for Americans to purchase rifles than handguns.

Under federal law, Americans buying handguns from licensed dealers must be at least 21, which would have precluded Salvador Ramos from buying that type of weapon. That trumps Texas law, which only requires buyers of any type of firearm to be 18 or older.

A woman in Charleston, West Virginia is being hailed a hero after she stopped a mass shooting. She was lawfully carrying a firearm and when a gunman appeared and began shooting into a crowd she shot and killed him saving the lives of all those who were present. The only injury or fatality reported was the gunman.

I heard about the shooting earlier this morning from Fox 23 KOKI-TV in Tulsa, OK. Unlike all the other news outlets that refuse to report or bury any story that contains the successful use of firearms in self-defense by an armed private citizen. For whatever reason most news outlets want to downplay any such stories.

In response to the tragedy in Uvalde, a local gun range owner is offering free basic defensive shooting lessons to teachers.

We spoke to Elizabeth Perry who said she isnt convinced that carrying a gun in the classroom is a good idea.

I feel like if they wanted to do that thats their personal choice but its also not in the teachers job description to be a body guard, we are tasked with making sure that our kids are safe but I dont think that it falls under the realm where we have to carry arms, said Perry.

The three members of Minnesota's Republican congressional delegation Reps. Tom Emmer, Michelle Fischbach and Pete Stauber boldly expressed their sadness in the bloody wake of Tuesday's school shooting in Texas.

What courage. What leadership. These are busy public servants with re-election campaigns to run who took the time to lament the deaths of 19 grade school students and two teachers. Gold stars all around.

That was not the choice of former President Donald Trump, who headlined the NRA's opening day meeting and chided those who did not "show up" at the event. He started with an homage to the victims, reading each name as a gong resounded offstage. He then segued into a laundry list of policies to control gun violence some of which have been undermined as details of Tuesday's mass shooting have been revealed.

After the horrific massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 children and two teachers dead, Americas outrage and desire to stop the carnage from gun violence is illustrated in a new Politico poll that finds nearly 70 percent of Americans support a ban on AR-15 type weapons, and 84 percent support banning sales of guns to people whom mental health officials have flagged as dangerous.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them. Joseph Story, Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States; With a Preliminary Review of the Constitutional History of the Colonies and States before the Adoption of the Constitution [Boston, 1833].
