When it comes to self-defense, there is always a trade-off between realism and safety. We dont train the way we want to fight. That may change as technology goes up and prices come down to let civilians afford more realism in their self-defense training. For a long time we set aside realism as we made training safer. This affects even the new student who is working on basic skills. |

A local gun rights group is bringing an advanced training course to Colorado to help local teachers, principals and other school personnel learn how to stop a Columbine-style mass shooting. The effort, launched by Coloradans for Civil Liberties, is welcomed by school officials in rural areas, who say teachers and others need to be trained to stop armed assailants since local law enforcement easily could be miles and miles away. |

Information collected by the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) indicates an unprecedented surge in the number of concealed carry permits, with the largest one-year increase on record occurring between May 2016 and May 2017. The CPRC tracks permit numbers across the country and publishes an annual report on concealed carrying in the United States. As of late last year, the number of Americans with carry permits hit the 15 million mark, and the current estimate of permittees is at 15.7 million almost double the number from 2011. |

Kansas legislators are facing a midsummer deadline to approve costly security upgrades for state hospitals and mental institutions in order to keep in place a four-year-old ban on concealed weapons inside the facilities. Although the conservative state frequently embraces pro-gun policies, this debate is unique. Even Republican Gov. Sam Brownback and GOP lawmakers who are strong supporters of concealed carry dont want the exemption for hospitals to disappear, fearing the prospect of guns around mental patients or in areas with specialized equipment. |

Gun-rights supporters are pushing for the right to carry concealed weapons in more places in Ohio, eliminate the requirement that people tell cops who stop them that they have a firearm and no longer require someone to retreat from a threat before using a gun. Eight gun bills pending in the Ohio General Assembly seek to expand gun rights. Nearly 40 lawmakers are signed on as sponsors of a stand your ground bill that would remove the duty to retreat from a threat. House Bill 228 would re-work Ohios self-defense laws and reduce requirements faced by CCW holders, such as keeping their hands in plain sight during traffic stops. |

Crime Prevention Research Centers (CPRC) John Lott points out that police are convicted of gun crime at a higher rate than permit holders. Lotts assessment is not for the purpose of disparaging police. Instead, it is to show that concealed carry permit holders are among the most law-abiding citizens, and their armed presence on campus is a deterrent, rather than a cause for concern. |

A new state law that gives colleges and universities the option to allow concealed weapons on their campuses hasn't caused many Ohio schools to change their policies. Most still ban firearms, including Kent State University. But an advocate for gun rights says such change comes incrementally, and he is asking a court to strike down Ohio State University policies that he says limit possession of handguns even in locked vehicles. |

One of the oft-repeated truisms as far as concealed carry and defensive shooting is concerned is the rule of threes, or something to that effect: most shootings where an assailant is shot by an armed citizen or police occur at close range. The rule of threes goes something like 3 or fewer shots at 3 or fewer yards in 3 seconds or less or some variation thereof. |

"The big beast stood like an uncouth statue, his hide black in the sunlight; he seemed what he was, a monster surviving over from the world's past, from the days when the beasts of the prime ran riot in their strength, before man grew so cunning of brain and hand as to master them." Theodore Roosevelt, former U.S. president and renowned big-game hunter, waxed poetic about a massive bull rhinoceros in his 1910 book, "African Game Trails: An Account of the African Wanderings of an American Hunter-Naturalist," after glimpsing the rhino during a safari in British East Africa and the Belgian Congo earlier that year. |

On Wednesday, May 24, 2017, Chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources Rob Bishop (R-UT) introduced H.R. 2620, the Lawful Purpose and Self Defense Act. This bill would remove ATFs authority to use the sporting purposes clauses in federal law in ways that could undermine the core purpose of the Second Amendment. Under Chairman Bishops legislation, all lawful purposes including self-defense would have to be given due consideration and respect in the administration of federal firearms law.

Pennsylvania State Rep. Jamie Santora (R-163) is pushing a ban on private gun sales nearly identical to the ones Michael Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand Action pushed in Washington state, Maine, and Nevada. Santoras bill would bar the private sales that Americans have enjoyed since the Second Amendment was ratified in 1791 and would require that every sale be processed in front of an agent of the government via a background check.

How does a hearing aid bill turn into a fight about gun rights? By having Elizabeth Warren as a lead legislative author, apparently. Warren has teamed up with several Republicans on legislation creating an over-the-counter category of hearing aids, which proponents believe would lower prices, spur innovation, and help millions of people with mild-to-moderate hearing loss obtain devices and improve their lives. As few as one in seven of the estimated 30 million Americans with hearing loss gets aids, experts say, and a big reason is their high cost.

This was because a man was arrested entering the Comic-Con with loaded guns, with the intent to kill a special guest. According to the man, who called himself "The Punisher," he was there to kill "bad police officers" and the Green #Power Ranger, #Jason David Frank. |

Were a trifle melancholy as we wrap up our Open Glock build. Thats mainly because we enjoy the process, but also because we learn so darn much. Between Billy Lester at Jager Products and LtCol. Freddie Blish at Robar, were miles ahead of where we started out. (Congrats, by the way, are due Sgt. Lester: USPSA High LEO in Open at Optics Nationals. Any wonder hes our go-to guy?) Then of course, theres the fine converted pistol we have to show for it. If that wont unmelancholy a fella (or lady) in a hurry, what would? |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"Some people think that the Second Amendment is an outdated relic of an earlier time. Doubtless some also think that constitutional protections of other rights are outdated relics of earlier times. We The People own those rights regardless, unless and until We The People repeal them. For those who believe it to be outdated, the Second Amendment provides a good test of whether their allegiance is really to the Constitution of the United States, or only to their preferences in public policies and audiences. The Constitution is law, not vague aspirations, and we are obligated to protect, defend, and apply it. If the Second Amendment were truly an outdated relic, the Constitution provides a method for repeal. The Constitution does not furnish the federal courts with an eraser." --9th Circuit Court Judge Andrew Kleinfeld, dissenting opinion in which the court refused to rehear the case while citing deeply flawed anti-Second Amendment nonsense (Nordyke v. King; opinion filed April 5, 2004) |
