Thirty-three students and teachers died at Virginia Tech in 2007 for no reason.

We all remember hearing the story of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and the massacre that occurred there, all because an armed man decided to commit an act of violence and went unhindered. The same process happened here at the University of Arizona in 2002, when an angry student killed three professors before he could be stopped by police.

These events occurred due to both schools policy of a weapon-free campus.

Signs posted on every door here at the U of A remind students that our campus is a weapon-free zone, where weapons simply are not allowed.

Any criminal, drunk, psycho, addict, teenager or other unsuitable American can attend a gun show and buy deadly pistols from amateur dealers -- no questions asked. Such informal sales don't require background checks of the sort performed by licensed dealers.

Submitter's note: The "gun show loophole" is merely a figment of the Antis' imagination and "closing" it is merely the next step toward registering all guns.

If you have never been the victim of a violent crime -- and hopefully you never will -- you might wonder about how you would react in a tough or dangerous situation.

You might have seen the latest action movie where the hero saves the day. However, real life does not follow a script.

Maybe you take self-defense or karate classes to help prepare to defend yourself against a would-be attacker. But, how much force can you use to defend yourself against an assailant and under what circumstances?

Prosecutors cited a video recording from a nightclub they said showed Ardelean drinking three beers and four shots in a little more than two hours. Shortly after that, his SUV slammed into the victims' car at Damen and Oakdale avenues while traveling more than 60 mph, authorities said.

The next month, a judge dismissed the charges, not convinced by a prosecution expert who calculated that Ardelean's blood-alcohol level at the time of the crash would have been above the legal threshold. He had been ordered by a superior to give a Breathalyzer test nearly eight hours after the crash, but Ardelean was well below the legal threshold.

A portrait of George Washington sits atop a bookshelf in Robert Owens Delaware office. Nearby, mounted on a detachable bi-pod, is a different symbol of Americas political might: a FN FAL battle rifle (known during the Cold War as the right arm of the free world and as the standard armament for NATO troops).

Flanking Owens bookshelf to the right is a large American flag. Mounted on the wall above is a World War I-era British Enfield rifle: a souvenir from Owens time studying at Oxford University.

Owens talks freely about his interpretation of the Second Amendment: guns are constitutionally-protected not for home defense, but as a check against an overzealous government.

To put it quite succinctly, the requirements in Utah for residents to carry a concealed weapon permit are a joke. Recently, the state of New Mexico correctly refused to recognize concealed weapon permits from our state. Utah officials should beef up class and requirement standards to make sure that a Utah permit means what is should -- that an individual has received sufficient training.

In Utah, an individual does not even need to have fired a gun to receive a permit. There are no requirements to demonstrate skill with a gun on a firing range. Also, there are no specific rules in our state for how long the course should be for concealed weapon permit applicants.

This week, attempts are likely to override two gubernatorial vetoes. Sen. Randy Brogdon said he will attempt an override of the veto of Senate Bill 1685, which would exempt guns or ammunition made in Oklahoma from federal regulations.

The governor said the measure would present safety concerns to residents and law enforcement officers alike.

The Legislature easily passed the measure. The Senate passed it 39-3. The House approved it 81-14.

Because it had a clause that makes the measure take effect immediately upon becoming law, it will take a three-fourths vote of members in each chamber to override the veto, or 76 votes in the House and 36 votes in the Senate.

Police say that a robber, who was armed with a carpet knife, entered the Its a Man's World vintage clothing store on the 3000 block of Mishawaka Ave, just before closing time. The robber reportedly picked up a few items as though he was shopping, then proceeded to the cash register, where he demanded the store owner hand over all of his money. A struggle ensued, with the store owner suffering minor cuts to his chest, arm, and hand, at which point the store owner grabbed his self defense gun and shot the robber in the abdomen, police say. The store owner then reportedly called 911, while ordering the suspect to stay still until the police could arrive.

Fearful that Americas Supreme Court will soon strike down Chicagos handgun ban, frustrated by the Illinois legislatures rejection of his anti-gun agenda, and repudiated by American courts and legislatures over his plan to sue federally licensed manufacturers and dealers of firearms for third-party crimes, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley (D) is showing contempt for his own countrys and states institutions, by seeking a foreign entity to enforce his anti-gun agenda against the American people.

After graduating from college, I served four years as an infantry officer in the Army's 25th Infantry Division. I fired everything from 9mm pistols to .50-caliber machine guns, routinely qualifying as "expert" with an M16A2 rifle.

It's not despite such experience, but precisely because of it, that I think the availability of guns in America is stunningly negligent public policy. And it may get worse.

Iowa Gov. Chet Culver signed the controversial concealed weapons law Thursday, putting to rest a years-old debate about how county sheriffs issue permits.

The bill would require county sheriffs to issue a permit to carry a concealed weapon to anyone who legally qualifies, rather than giving them discretion about whether to reject the permit for another reason.

Culver signed the bill on the last day he could, Thursday. If he hadn't signed the bill, he would have effectively killed it through a pocket veto.

Targeting the rampant gun violence that is plaguing the city of Chicago is the goal of legislation sponsored by state Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale, that will increase penalties for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

"While I am a strong proponent of the Second Amendment, this law would only impact individuals who do not possess a valid Firearm Operators Identification Card and who are caught carrying a loaded, uncased weapon on the street," Dillard said in a press release. "It's irresponsible, it's unsafe and it is a recipe for illegal gun use."

President Barack Obama took aim Saturday at the angry rhetoric of those who denigrate government as "inherently bad" and said their off-base line of attack ignores the fact that in a democracy, "government is us."

Obama used his commencement speech at the University of Michigan to respond to foes who portray government as oppressive and tyrannical - and to warn that overheated language can signal extremists that "perhaps violence is ... justifiable."

Trenton Police have arrested a man who attacked his neighbor with a bow and arrow Thursday evening.
Just after 11 p.m., police received a report that a man, identified as Anthony Giovannini, 35, was struck with what he believed was a rock as he was walking inside of his house on the 400 block of Franklin Street.
Giovannini told police that after being struck, he looked and observed his neighbor, later identified as Robert Wood, 41, entering his home. The victim then noticed an arrow protruding from his back and yelled for his girlfriend to call police and an ambulance arrived immediately.

Ed.: That's some ambulance service they have there.

I'll never look at my fellow joggers the same way again.

It turns out some people wear more than a shirt, shorts, sneaker and an iPod... because not only are some joggers packing heat, there's an entire industry to accommodate them.

Why would anyone need to carry a pistol while jogging?

Well... just listen to the logic from one pistol-packing Second Amendment advocate:

"Dogs are probably the biggest threat on my jogging route," Kyle Hausen, a Cincinnati-area police officer and firearms instructor, told AOL News.

"When gun enthusiasts talk about constitutional liberties guaranteed by the Second Amendment, they are referring to freedom in a general sense, but they also have something more specific in mind-freedom from government oppression. They argue that the only way to keep federal authority in check is to arm individual citizens who can, if necessary, defend themselves from an aggressive government. In the past decade, this view of the proper relationship between government and individual rights and the insistence on a role for private violence in a democracy has been co-opted by the conservative movement. As a result, it has spread beyond extreme militia groups to influence state and national policy."
