"Having an editorial published in the Chicago market by a major newspaper that is traditionally hostile to the right to keep and bear arms is an achievement with untold potential--for many of the readers, it could be the first time they have been exposed to such cogent arguments, plus, as this will undoubtedly provoke pro and con feedback (that is, evidence of readership), it could encourage the paper to continue providing a forum for such viewpoints." |

Why did Pima County, Arizona cops break into the home of Jose Guerena and kill him? Why did 60 police bullets pierce the body of this war veteran who had served honorably twice in Iraq and once in Afghanistan? What was Jose Guerena suspected of doing that resulted in his summary execution by the police? Why did Pima County police prevent medics from reaching Jose for one hour and 15 minutes as he lay dying on the floor of his Tucson home? Why did 911 medics not arrive with emergency medical assistance to help Jose? After Jose died, why did the Pima County Sheriff's office tell lies to slander Jose's good name? Why did they lie about their own actions? ... What happened to the public information law and the public's right to know? |

Bar owners argue that regulating who is carrying a gun while drunk is difficult -- if not impossible --and that its unlikely someone carrying a weapon will go into a bar without having a drink.
That argument is "looking for a straw that's not there," said Joe Eaton, legislative director for the Buckeye Firearms Association, which lobbied for the law.
...
Citi Bar on West Main Street and Orange Carpet Lounge on North Columbus Street already have bought metal detector wands to ward off customers who are carrying weapons, Carpenter said.
Ed.: They didn't buy wands to stop criminals from illegally carrying in the bar; they bought them to stop law-abiding citizens from doing so. Citi Bar sounds like a pro-criminal joint. |

Gun rights supporters are upset that the legislature did not pass a bill that would have required businesses to let people carry their guns into workplace parking lots. They also are disappointed in the legislatures handling of a bill that would have let college faculty carry handguns on public university campuses.
We have looked forward to changes in the laws which would remove infringements on personal liberties and freedoms, which would reduce the size of government, which would restore individual rights and return the balance of government to civilian stewardship, Tennessee Firearms Association Executive Director John Harris stated on his groups website in April. |

Crow, 44, a self-described anarchist and veteran organizer of anticorporate demonstrations, is among dozens of political activists across the country known to have come under scrutiny from the FBIs increased counterterrorism operations since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Other targets of bureau surveillance, which has been criticized by civil liberties groups and mildly faulted by the Justice Departments inspector general, have included antiwar activists in Pittsburgh, animal rights advocates in Virginia and liberal Roman Catholics in Nebraska. When such investigations produce no criminal charges, their methods rarely come to light publicly. |

But those carrying weapons were quietly escorted to the sidewalk by Indiana State Police officers.
Thats because a weapons ban for state government buildings also extends to the lawn, police told the citizens all of whom showed proper permits to carry their handguns. The state ban is based on a rule passed by the Indiana Department of Administration.
Some of the men wore the handguns openly on their hips in holsters while others had shirts covering bulges. Back at the sidewalk, they couldnt hear the speakers and couldnt participate in the protest.
...
There is irony there, said Rep. Mike Speedy, R-Indianapolis. To me it doesnt seem right.
He said lawmakers could possibly look into changing the state rule next year. |

Since the 1920s, the little beige house that sits alongside Interstate 57 in Markham has served as the headquarters of the Blue Park Gun Club, a small group of recreational shooters started by World War I veterans that's now in its third generation of families.
...
This year, the shooting range is silent. The trap throwers, ready to spit out the circular, orange clay pigeons, are turned off. In the windows, signs warn: "No Shooting Allowed."
The gun club finds itself caught in the gears of government. For decades, its longtime landlord, the Cook County Board, was OK with letting the hobbyists fire away. |

Gun violence in Ohio is costing scores of lives and millions of dollars annually across the state, though much of it happens in the largest cities, according to a newspaper analysis published Sunday.
The Columbus Dispatch analyzed state records and data from 2009, which offer the most recent statewide statistics available. It found guns were present in more than 12,500 incidents investigated by authorities, an average of 34 per day. Four-fifths of those happened in seven of Ohios largest cities: Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo and Youngstown. |

"Why, why did you kill him?" a traumatized Vanessa Guerena begged to know as she was interrogated in a makeshift "command center" by detectives from the same Sheriff's Office that had just slaughtered her husband Jose. Her questioners, eager to exploit her trauma to extract information, initially refused to give her a straightforward answer.
Jose, who had finished a graveyard shift at the Asarco copper mine, was sleeping when a SWAT team from the Pima County Sheriff's Office laid siege to his home on the morning of May 5. Vanessa was doing laundry, and the couple's four-year-old son Joel was watching Transformers, when the SWAT raiders pulled up in a Bear Cat armored vehicle. |

Senate Bill 292 generally pre-empts local ordinances that regulate firearms, including cities with specific gun bans and rules prohibiting weapons in public buildings and parks. This means the city has no authority to ban the weapons from the new city building.
...
But that same law allows those who have weapons carry permits to take guns into the building basically allowing communities to ban weapons that are already being carried illegally. This compromise was added at the end of the session to give cities the authority to search for illegal weapons and keep them out of government buildings. |

However, GMs contribution was not just restricted to automotive technologies. The automaker also produced almost 2 million machine and submachine guns, and over 3 million carbines along with 190,000 cannons. It made over 300,000 precision gyroscopes, critical for aircraft navigation, along with millions of electric motors and fuses, and hundreds of millions of ball and roller bearings. To go with the cannons and guns, GM also made over a hundred million artillery shells and about 40 million cartridge cases. |

It makes no sense to me that this simple check is not required for all firearm purchases. Mobile high speed Internet access would enable a gun show to set up a station to run background checks on potential gun purchasers as well as a database to check the serial numbers of guns being traded.
Jesse Mathews was a criminal and surely would have sought the assault rifle through other means. Closing off access to gun shows won't prevent felons from purchasing illegal firearms through other means, but it will cut down the volume of guns available to them tremendously. |

The number of justifiable killings committed by police and private citizens has been trending upward over the past decade, rising in 2009 to their highest levels in more than a dozen years in both Virginia and the nation.
There are no definitive answers to what is causing more law-enforcement officers and individuals to use deadly force in dealing with crime. But some criminologists say changing attitudes about the circumstances in which lethal force can be used in self-defense situations might be a driving factor. |

Given all that, it's not surprising -- alarming, maybe, but not surprising -- that almost no attention is being paid to a report that Mr. Obama is working on imposing gun control measures on Americans "under the radar" -- according to gun control advocate Sarah Brady.
That would really be something: toying with the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms without so much as a how-do-you-do to the legislative branch of the government. |

The Republican legislators and governor are creating a conundrum for themselves. To pass a law permitting concealed gun carry in public places will be directly opposed to their unfortunate present policy of restricting general access to the most public of all Wisconsin buildings, the Wisconsin state Capitol. This will needlessly expose citizens to unseen dangers, while the legislators and governor huddle safely in the Capitol. Once again, the Republicans seem to have not given adequate thought to their actions. |

Citizens who trade in a functioning handgun will receive a gift card worth $150. Those who trade in a functioning rifle or shotgun will get a gift card worth $100.
Lind, a Republican who represented Waterloo in the Iowa Senate from 1986 until his abrupt resignation in 1997 in a dispute over tax policy, said: "I'm not a gun control advocate. I believe in the right to bear arms. I just want to get bad guns off the street." |
