"DENVER - A harassment charge has been dropped in the case of a 35-year-old Colorado man who faced prosecution for displaying his middle finger to a Colorado State Patrol trooper. The State Patrol said in a statement late Friday that it asked that the case be dropped.
The American Civil Liberties Union had argued that while the gesture may be have been rude, it amounted to protected free speech."

Submitter's note: Like a diseased tree, sometimes it provides shade. Such is the ACLU in this case. I don't know what's worse, the arrogant criminal cop or the equally criminal behavior of the prosecutor. |

"Much like the year before. And the year before. And the year before. This year, eight children already have drowned, even before the summer has begun."

Submitter's note: Pools are incredibly deadly to children, and totally dwarf the accidental deaths of children with firearms, yet the antis never try to ban or even restrict pools. |

The death of a former Marine near Tucson continues to stir controversy.
A group spent this Memorial Day protesting the SWAT raid which led to his death. Investigation documents reveal officers seized guns, banking documents and other items from the home but did not find drugs or cash.
The original search warrants, along with other documents relating to the investigation, remain sealed.
Jose Guerena, 26, had no history of violent crime but was listed as a possible suspect in a complex drug investigation.
...
When they arrived to serve the search warrant, Guerena reportedly grabbed a gun. He didn't aim it at officers but they opened fire, shooting him 60 times. |

Borough officials are once again wrestling with a proposed ordinance that would prohibit the discharge of guns in the residential community and allow police officers to confiscate the weapons used by offenders.
Borough Solicitor John Wills characterized the proposed firearms restriction as a blanket prohibition.
The new law was discussed at length by borough council and defeated by a 5-2 vote last September, but the proposal has been resurrected by council President Shirley Purcival.
At councils May 25 session, the firearms ordinance was again debated, with police Chief John Egan explaining why he backed the prohibition. |

A national gun-control group has named Kansas as one of four states to receive its "Craziest Gun Laws" award because of a new measure the organization says allows guns in the state's schools.
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence issued its annual ranking of gun laws earlier this month. Kansas, Virginia, Utah and Florida received the group's "Craziest Gun Laws" award. |

TEACHERS told off two seven-year-old boys playing an army game - because it was "threatening".
The lads were spotted making gun shapes with their hands.
Staff also told the pupils' parents to reprimand them. The dad of one of the boys said: "This is ridiculous. How can you tell a seven-year-old boy he can't play guns and armies with his friends.
"We were told to tell our son he cannot play 'guns' anymore.
"The teacher said the boys should be reprimanded for threatening behaviour, which would not be tolerated at the school." The boys attend Nathaniel Newton Infants in Nuneaton, Warwicks. |

Supreme Court allows police to take all firearms from law-abiding motorists during traffic stops.
Police officers in New Mexico can take guns away from drivers who pose no threat. The state supreme court ruled on May 20 that "officer safety" is more important than any constitutional rights a gun-owning motorist might have. The ruling was handed down in deciding the fate of Gregory Ketelson who was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over on November 13, 2008.

Generally speaking, gun control is recognized as the effort to restrict or somehow limit the production, shipment and sale of guns by and to private citizens. Over time, this issue has become a staple of controversy and one of the most hotly-contested discussion points of all of the relevant social issues facing Americans. More often than not, where one falls on gun control depends largely on their political affiliation, their moral standards and their past experiences with firearms.
According to some estimates, approximately 80 million homes in the U.S. own 223 million guns. |

When Florida lawmakers in 2005 made their state one of the first to significantly expand its citizens' self-defense rights, they hoped doing so would deter criminals and ultimately reduce violent crime.
What they got instead was two years worth of increasing gun violence. By mid-2007, the incidence of murders, armed robberies and assaults had increased statewide by 42 percent, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement website.
While few lawmakers, police or prosecutors argue that the expansion of self-defense rights played a direct role in that increase, those figures have caused some observers to question whether expanding such rights can reduce violent crime, as supporters claim. |

The Assembly Judiciary Committee is considering a bill that would automatically let someone off-the-hook for killing a home invader, if they feel their life is in danger.
When an individual is faced with a potential life threatening situation in their home or dwelling they shouldnt have to weigh civil liability concerns with defending themselves or loved ones, Senate sponsor Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) testified. |

This backward approach suggests the justices were eager to repudiate a straightforward extension of self-defense that struck them as an outmoded impediment to law enforcement. Like the sniff, knock, listen and kick rule endorsed by the U.S. Supreme Court, the decision illustrates the steady erosion of security in the name of security, even in the setting where our right to be left alone is supposed to be strongest. |

Advocates for Oregon gun rights sustained a setback when the state Senate Judiciary Committee amended a House-passed bill with a so-called poison pill.
Three Democrats on the committee last week changed HB 2797 by adding provisions opposed by the main backers of the original, which was intended to clarify how people such as ranchers or hunters can legally carry handguns on motorcycles, ATVs or snowmobiles. It had passed the House 58-0.
The two Republicans on the Senate panel, Doug Whitsett of Klamath Falls and Jeff Kruse of Roseburg, objected to the changes and served notice they may file a minority report when the bill gets to the Senate floor. |

In the 1990s, more than 40 cities and counties sued gun manufacturers, arguing that the companies had flooded the market with weapons they knew would fall into criminals' hands.
Camden County said firearms manufacturers had created a public nuisance, and it sought damages for the costs related to gun crimes. More than 12 people represented the companies in federal appeals court in 2001, including Patterson, an attorney for Colt's Manufacturing. The companies were victorious.
At the Judiciary Committee hearing, senators should go through every state gun law and ask if Patterson plans to invalidate them, said David Kairys, the Temple law professor who began the effort against gun companies. |

On the other end of the spectrum is Waukesha County Sheriff Daniel Trawicki, who believes the legislation helps uphold the constitutional right to bear arms.
I am definitely in favor of conceal carry, Trawicki said. I think it is ridiculous that we cant trust law-abiding citizens to carry guns.
Also supporting the concealed weapons bill is Bayside Police Chief Bruce Resnick.
"Personally, I think its overblown and I dont think its a big issue," he said. "Bad people that want to carry guns, carry guns. Crooks carry guns, I mean thats what they do, and they dont have a permit to do it, and they will never get a permit to do it." |

When MAIG lobbies against reciprocity for law-abiding gun owners who have licenses to carry firearms for self-protection, that is not about illegal guns. That is about denying self-protection rights of law-abiding gun owners.
When MAIG lobbies to regulate gun shows out of existence, that is not about illegal guns. That is about shutting down a legal activity that has a positive economic impact on communities.
When MAIG lobbies to take away the privacy rights of law-abiding gun owners, that is not about illegal guns. That is about violating the rights of law-abiding gun owners. |

A recent piece in The Wall Street Journal is helping to put to rest the false claim that Americas firearms industry plays a role in illegal firearms trafficking operations. The article, written by criminologist Gary Kleck, confirms Department of Justice and independent research dispelling gun control propaganda on the issue of trafficking into Mexico.
Kleck cites researchers at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) who have demonstrated that criminals obtain guns from a wide variety of largely interchangeable low‑volume sources not a handful of bad apple dealers. |

By law, anyone who buys a gun in California must also purchase a trigger lock or some other form of safety device.
According to one local gun seller, more and more people are buying the safety equipment.
But many still worry that "child-proofing" their gun will get in the way of using the weapon in an emergency.
"This is probably the most popular trigger lock we sell here..."
Merritt Gilbert at Valley Rod and Guns in Clovis says gun-lock sales have been going up in recent years.
Ed.: The best way to keep your guns safe in California is to support pro-gun politicians and pro-Second Amendment groups. |
