IRVING, Texas (AP) Two people died Wednesday in an apparent murder-suicide at a Texas community college, prompting an active-shooter alert that instructed students and employees to barricade themselves in rooms. It was the second deadly attack on a Texas campus this week.

Submitters note: These incidents provide the answer to why would anyone need a gun on a college campus. It's because criminals, wackos and terrorists will still attack you on a college campus whether or not it is a victim disarmament zone.

A controversial bill is making its way through the Oklahoma statehouse that would allow someone to legally draw a gun if they felt their life was in danger.

Senate Bill 40, also called the 'Point, Don't Shoot' bill, would allow someone to point a weapon at a person in self-defense or to stop a forcible felony.

Texas legislators who support a convention of states to rewrite the U.S. Constitution are at odds over whether to jail delegates who go rogue and impose unwanted changes at the longshot gathering.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott wants to bypass Congress and limit Washingtons power via a federal balanced budget amendment and term limits. But some top conservatives fear a runaway convention at which representatives from liberal areas could target things such as the Second Amendments right to bear arms.

Our norm was changed that day, said Mr. DeSear, who explained why he and his wife also decided to run through the training and receive a permit to carry a gun.

We didnt even own a gun before, said Mr. DeSear.

But following the shooting he said they agreed that going armed gave them both a deeper sense of comfort. They head to the range typically once a week.

The couple trained their now 12-year-old son on how to handle guns. And they are now familiar with several different firearms.

In 2014, Billionaire Michael Bloomberg pledged $50 million to take on the NRA.

Three years later, Americas embrace of Second Amendment rights is as strong as ever, and pro-gun sentiments dominate both chambers of Congress, the White House, and the bulk of state legislatures and governors mansions.

Walk into any gun store and you will find revolvers. Single action 22 rimfires, chunky Ruger double actions, Taurus Judges, and perhaps even older Colt or Smith & Wesson police trade-ins with varying degrees of wear and tear. But despite the number of revolvers out there today for both sport and personal defense, the J-frame Smith & Wesson .38 Special is still arguably the gold standard and a hot item to be found at many a big box store and mom-and-pop shop.

A new study released this week suggests mass shootings may encourage Californias potential gun owners to make that first purchase.

The research, published Tuesday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, concluded Californias handgun sales spiked 53 percent in the months following the Sandy Hook shooting in December 2012 and 41 percent after the San Bernardino attack in December 2015.

David Studdert, a professor of law and medicine at Stanford University who authored the study, told CNN Tuesday many of those purchases came from residents who never before owned a gun.

Of course, what I discovered is, theres no gat for that. We are not the target audience for their gun play. Stoking white fear of imaginary terrorists, black thugs and immigrantsand keeping in place the guns and policies that support itis what the NRA convention is all about.

Its always good to get together with 81,000 of your fellow NRA members, and this years NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits in Atlanta, Ga., was no exception. While many members of the media seemed to feel it was their job to portray the event as a lily-white gathering of angry Americans, that wasnt what I found at this years meeting.

As has been the case with every city hosting the NRAs annual meeting, the concentration of guns on the streets of Atlanta last weekend went up 100-fold and crime went down accordingly. If you read no further, read this: In the inimitable words of economist and former Yale researcher John Lott, More Guns, Less Crime.

Atlanta had no so-called gun-free zones last weekend. The town was teeming with firearms, including CNN Center, where some of the NRA events were held.

The fight for open carry and campus carry is done, but the next battle in the war over Texas gun rights, and the issue so-called permitless carry will likely be decided next week.

House Bill 1911, by state Rep. James White, R-Hillister, would authorize anyone whos allowed to own a handgun to carry it without obtaining a state-issued License To Carry, and representatives for both sides of the conflict agree that the proposal has advanced further in the legislative process than any previous effort.

There is ample time for this bill to become law, state Rep. Gina Hinojosa, D-Austin, said Monday. To everyones astonishment and horror, this bill has had a committee hearing and has been voted out of committee.

On May 3 gun control proponent Gabby Giffords joined Democrat lawmakers on Capitol Hill in pledging to fight efforts to nationalize concealed carry for law-abiding citizens.
By opposing national reciprocity, Giffords and lawmakers like Senator Chris Murphy (D) are literally working against citizens who have received some level of firearm education and/or training, and have undergone background checks for their permits. This comes even as Giffords gun control group is demanding background checks as a way to know who should and should not be able to own a gun.

Spartanburg Republican Rep. Eddie Tallon said he sponsored the amendment to grant "true reciprocity," meaning the state only accept the permits from the states that accept South Carolina's.

But bill sponsor, Rep. Alan Clemmons, R-Myrtle Beach, urged for lawmakers not to get hung up on the word "reciprocity," and instead vote to grant recognition of the permits of all states.

"True recognition is better because it takes us closer to the standard of the Second Amendment," Clemmons said. "Again I remind you, this bill is top priority nationally for the National Rifle Association."

The next time you visit your local sporting goods store, take a moment and stroll down the ammunition aisle. If you havent been to that section of the store in some time, prepare to be pleasantly shocked and amazed.

Shelves that only recently stored more dust than merchandise now brim with hundreds, even thousands, of boxes of rimfire, shotgun and centerfire pistol and rifle ammunition of every caliber, gauge and description.

This new bounty of firearms and ammunition is a direct consequence of a pro-Second Amendment administration and Congress replacing the former anti-gun governance. For the moment at least, sporting goods stores are stocking all the firearms, ammunition and accessories our hearts could possibly desire.

On Monday, the Huffington Post published excerpts of a speech Green made in 2013 at a gun rights event in which he said armed citizenry is the ultimate checks and balances on the government as outlined in the constitution, and argued citizens should be able to own any weapon the federal government has, even aircraft carriers.

Sen. Mark Warner announced Wednesday he intends to oppose a congressional effort to expand gun owner rights through what's known as "concealed carry reciprocity."

The bill, introduced to the House of Representatives in January by GOP Rep. Richard Hudson of Virginia, would allow individuals to be held under the existing concealed carry measures of their home states, even when traveling beyond their borders, effectively loosening laws for out-of-state gun owners nationwide.

The VA's current policy is to flag the names of veterans who have been declared mentally incompetent in the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System so they can't buy a new gun. But that violates their Second Amendment rights, says Republican Rep. Phil Roe of Tennessee, chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee.

"VA does not determine that the veteran is actually dangerous before sending the name to the FBI," said Roe, who sponsored the bill to require a judge or magistrate to put veterans on the NICS.

He and other advocates for gun rights say veterans shouldn't be barred from buying guns unless they've undergone some kind of due process and had a chance to make their case.

Few aspects of United States law have drawn more interest from, or inspired more debate amongst, the American public than the Bill of Rights. Over time and through shifting interpretations by the Courts, the meanings of the rights granted to citizens have shifted, and, in many cases, their scopes have been vastly expanded.

The Promise, directed by Terry George (Hotel Rwanda), takes place during World War I, when the Ottoman Turks set out to exterminate the Armenians, the first attempt at genocide of the past century.

The film, which purports to be educational, does a decent job showing Turkish mobs attacking Armenians and looting their homes and businesses. On the other hand, The Promise fails to show why the Turkish oppressors met with such little resistance.

As Peter Balakian noted in The Burning Tigris: The Armenian Genocide and Americas Response, a good companion volume for the film, the Ottomans took great care to disarm the despised Armenians. That left them essentially helpless against a determined and highly mechanized oppressor.

Usually, police officers must have probable cause to make an arrest before they conduct a personal search or even a pat down. However, the court concluded that there is a narrowly drawn authority to permit a reasonable search for weapons for the protection of the police officer, where he has reason to believe that he is dealing with an armed and dangerous individual, regardless of whether he has probable cause to arrest the individual for a crime.

Perhaps the effectiveness of the Minuteman militias induced the Founding Fathers to secure in the Second Amendment the citizens rights to bear arms, and now we have to cope with stop and frisk, which violates the constitutional rights that were to be provided by the Fourth Amendment.

Wells also told the judge Elizabeth Hokoana had won an award in the fifth grade for being a peacekeeper.

After the hearing, Wells said Dukes had posted volatile Facebook comments before the Jan. 20 event.

He was talking about the time for rationale discussion between the left and right has ended and it is time to use violence, Wells said of Dukes.

The shooting, Wells said, was the culmination of escalating violence in the crowd, leading to Dukes attacking Marc Hokoana.

Ive been an attorney for over 20 years, he said. At this point in time, this is as good of a self-defense case as I have seen.
