Like “Billy the Kid,” a young man whose mother died at 16 and whose stepfather had not only abandoned the family, but disowned his stepson after Billy started stealing horses, rootless young men with dysfunctional families often got into trouble in those days — just like today. Back then, drunken, bored teenagers with guns seeking reputations as dangerous tough guys were ticking time bombs waiting to explode — just like today.
History can provide other examples, in countless times and places. So, what can we learn from this? |

Right now, more than 193-thousand Tennesseans have valid handgun carry permits. Those numbers, offered by the Tennessee Department of Safety, include more than twelve thousand permit holders in Davidson County. Recent reports of citizens defending themselves against criminals doesn't surprise Joelton shooting range owner, Rob Corcoran. Corcoran says each year, he sells more guns and teachers more classes to Tennesseans interested in meeting the state's handgun permit requirements. |

Second Amendment supporters got a couple of pieces of good news last week. One, perhaps the most important in a while, was that a federal appeals court didn't buy New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's argument that firearms manufacturers should be held responsible for firearm violence in his city. The other bit of good news came when U.S. Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne proposed new rules regarding carrying loaded, concealed firearms in some national parks and wildlife refuges.

THOSE PESKY Granite State gun owners have damaged the spin machine of the Violence Policy Center, an anti-gun group in Washington, D.C.
...
The VPC dares not look at the bottom seven states instead of the arbitrary five. That is because, lo and behold, New Hampshire ranks seventh from the bottom in per capita gun deaths. New Hampshire is undeniably a strong pro-gun state that greatly respects the individual right to keep and bear arms. |

New Jersey state Sen. Bob Smith has proposed legislation that would make it a crime to remove the tips or "obscure" a firearm by adding a tip to it.
"If police are called to the scene and don't see those tips, then they open fire because it appears the person has a deadly weapon," Smith said. "The officer doesn't have too many choices."
Ed.: This is why cops shouldn't be allowed to fire unless fired upon, I submit. If that rule of engagement is good enough for my fellow soldiers in combat zones, then it is more than good enough for police in America. |

Authorities say a dentist was defending himself when he shot and wounded his estranged wife who had attacked him with a pickax.
...
The couple was not living together and Margaret Johnson had been served with a restraining order the day of the shooting.
Don Johnson says his wife broke through a window after he had gone to bed Friday and that she entered the house armed with a pickax. Authorities say Johnson fired one shot, then called the sheriff's department. |

Last Thursday night, police in Columbus, Ohio raided what they thought was a crack house. Though initial reports say some illicit drugs were found, the police thus far haven't been forthcoming about what type or how much. It's starting to look like the place was instead a gambling house.
When the police busted in, two men—who now say they thought they were being robbed—fired at the door. Two police officers were wounded. Both are likely to survive. The two men are being charged with attempted murder. The police say they announced twice before battering down the door, but at least one witness not in the house at the time says he only heard an order from one officer for "knockers" to break out the windows. |

They squeezed behind classroom desks and dutifully laid out their notebooks, seeking permits to carry a concealed handgun. A church elder hoping to feel less helpless should another gunman open fire in a sanctuary; a retired woman wanting backup on long rural drives; a burly, bearded man who thinks the world is getting crazier; a disabled man and his concerned father, seeking protection from street vultures. Shooting expert Doug Hamilton's pupils at Cherry Creek's Family Shooting Center cut a wide demographic swath, but all were eager, attentive and sincerely awed by the power and responsibility a concealed-carry permit confers on the gun owner. |

A leading member of the National Rifle Associations board in Martinsburg on Saturday said Republican Party leaders need to stop wringing their hands in Washington and engage their constituents to be successful in the general election in November. We just have to work four times as hard ... and talk to five times as many people, NRA second vice president David A. Keene told about 150 gathered for the Berkeley County Republican Clubs annual Lincoln Day Dinner. The dinner at Bethel Assembly of God Church attracted nearly every Republican candidate seeking a statewide office and a few Democratic candidates and elected officeholders, too. |

...There are many weapons, from handguns to assault rifles, with little appropriate use in urban areas that are all too readily available. When children are shot on street corners of our cities by illegal guns, urban centers become war zones. It's not a question of how liberal urban dwellers are, it's about staying alive.
That's why, regardless of the decision reached by the Supreme Court this June, at least one of the candidates for president must make a strong commitment to gun control. Whether they risk being called elitists or not..."

There has been a national move underway to keep secret names and addresses of persons who have concealed weapons permits. The battle is over what some people call open government versus those who want their privacy kept private. So far this year eight states have introduced bills to keep the names from being made public. There are 26 states where names of concealed weapons permits are not public information. |

"...They have been making an unco' noise in Boston about the carrying on concealed weapons, to which certain parties, in consequence of the Liquor Law, have felt obliged to resort in self-defense. A man named Richardson, whose zeal on behalf of temperance had outstripped his discretion, and concentred much angry feeling upon him, bore arms in preparation for the worst; and having been arrested upon the charge, was taken before Mr. Justice Timperly for examination. The Justice, after a fair hearing, dismissed the charge, on the ground that the man had serious reason for apprehension; and that in self-defense any man has a right to bear arms...." |

There is more in the proposed ordinance to the same general effect, much of which is in apparent contravention of the Federal Constitution..."
"...The most serious aspect of the matter, however, is found in the fact that persons desiring firearms for improper purposes will pay no attention to the ordinance, and law-abiding citizens who voluntarily comply with it will find themselves at a disadvantage in defending their lives..." |

It is remarkable how many people are willing to help illegal gun sellers. Congress all too often takes the side of the gun lobby over victims of gun violence. "Charges have dropped against Landon Beard in a Robbinsdale road rage case, Beards attorney Bill Michael said Friday."
"In December, Beard, 27, was indicted and plead not guilty in Anoka County court for allegedly making terroristic threats during a Coon Rapids road rage incident on June 7. An undercover police officer, Beard was immediately placed on administrative leave following the incident."
"... a grand jury indicted Beard and the other driver in the incident, 35-year-old Martin Treptow. ..." ... -------
Submitter's Note: According to (uninvolved) witnesses, the "terroristic threat" made by Officer Beard was "I will f**king kill you, I don't care about jail!" while waving his gun at Treptow, his wife and his two children. More info here. |

A tribute to Charlton Heston, discussion about a pending U.S. Supreme Court case on gun ownership, and "acres and acres of guns and gear." That's all on the agenda later this month, when Louisville will be the host of the annual convention of the National Rifle Association for the first time. More than 70,000 gun enthusiasts are expected at the May 16-18 convention, which the NRA decided four years ago to hold here. Mayor Jerry Abramson said the city and its hotels, restaurants and stores stand to get an economic boost of $15 million to $20 million from the gathering. |

It was sort of a lark when I decided to take the National Rifle Association's First Steps Pistol Orientation in March at Fenton Lakes Sportsman's Club in Fenton. I was bored and have always wanted to learn to shoot. The four-hour class was just $25. It was fun. I could not have anticipated the overwhelming response from gun owners across the country. Every day for more than a week e-mail messages poured in and two gun owners called from out of state to thank me for being an "open-minded journalist." |

From his precinct on the fringes of Hells Kitchen, Detective Kevin P. Schroeder has cracked the case of a corpse in a Dumpster, wrestled a man into handcuffs on the sidewalk, and chased suspects across rooftops and down fire escapes. When he prepares for a day at work, he puts his handgun in a holster, clips his cellphone and radio on his belt, and tucks handcuffs into his waistband, letting one of the cuffs dangle outside where he can easily grab it. And then, in a well-worn tradition that has endured for more than a century, Detective Schroeder adds one more crucial piece of gear. He puts on a tailored suit jacket that has been cut with extra material around the waist. That way, there are no unsightly bulges from gun and gear.

This is extremely frustrating to cover because of the limited statements mandated by Cavalry Arms' attorneys, although imagine the frustration they are going through. How in the world is BATFU able to legally take and dispose of property without a judgment? I understand seizures for evidence, but this is outside of anything I have ever seen, and I welcome comments from those with an understanding of the "Always Think Forfeiture" process.

Insanity here is defined as $542,000, a blast-resistant body, rotating roof hatch, ten gun ports, a battering ram, a video camera with night vision, and the capability to go 75mph.
Perhaps the most amazing thing is that the local media justified this massive monster because, a couple of weeks ago, there was a standoff in a community near mine wherein this thing was used to "knock down the front door." That's like justifying the use of an ax to cut sewing thread. Under the guise of Homeland Security, states and localities are provided the funds, so Michigan police are going crazy bulking up their police state.
Submitter's note: Government is not your friend. 'it's like fire', proclaimed George Washington. 'don't let it get out of control.' |

Gun control may fit into any equation concerning crime, but it does not, in any form or fashion, have a place in the United States of America. In 1974, Dr. Mark Borinsky, a victim of gun violence, founded the "National Council to Control Handguns." In 2001, it was renamed "The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence." Each year this organization rates each state, with a number grade similar to school grading, from 0 to 100. A "100" would mean that the state has the tightest controls in place and the "0" rating means simply that the state has no gun controls in place. |

A gun-running ring that put dozens of illegal firearms on the streets of New York City has been completely dismantled after a group of out-of-state buyers was indicted, federal authorities said yesterday. The group of "straw purchasers" bought guns legally at shops in two Alabama counties and sold them to dealers who dumped them on the streets of Brooklyn from late 2006 through April 2007, according to Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Special Agent William McMahon. |

Sen. Hillary Clintons mailing attacking Sen. Barack Obamas record on guns appears to include a striking visual gaffe: The image of the gun pictured on the face of the mailing is reversed, making it a nonexistent left-handed model of the Mauser 66 rifle. To make matters worse, a prominent gun dealer said, its an expensive German gun with customized features that make it clearly European. The gun in the photo does not exist, said Val Forgett III, president of Navy Arms in Martinsburg, W.Va. Forgett's company was Mausers agent in the United States when the gun was released, and it sold Mauser guns here again in the 1990s. |

Concerns that realistic-looking toy weapons are confusing police and threatening safety have led 15 states to take a crack at going beyond gun control to implement fake-gun control. Officer Micheal Hoover knows a fair amount about guns as a sniper instructor for a Tennessee SWAT team. He recalls the night two years ago when a car pulled up beside him on a highway and the passenger waved what looked like an Uzi. "It scared me," he said. Hillary Clinton or one of her allies is reaching out to gun owners in Indiana. Two voters report receiving a telephone call from a woman, reading from a card, who said that if the voter valued his (and in one case her) guns, they ought not "trust Obama" and should vote for Hillary Clinton instead. One caller reports interrupting the phone banker with a question about Clinton's "pretty terrible" record on guns, but the caller was undaunted and kept reading the script. No immediate comment from the Clinton campaign. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling in terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? [...] The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!" Alexander Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago (Chapter 1 "Arrest") |
