"In a victory for the Madison Center for Free Speech, a United State District Court on Monday declared that the First Amendment was violated by an Indiana law that prohibited the printing or distribution of a list of candidates expressing support for the candidates without their prior written consent. Federal Judge John Tinder found that requiring candidate consent caused a candidate's supporters to 'lose the independent quality of their speech, as any slate they publish is now understood as having been licensed by the primary candidate in question,' and also 'deprives a candidate of the freedom to retain any neutrality or ambiguity with respect to his would-be supporters.' "The present regime is reluctant today to reinitiate the draft, which would probably cause rioting in the streets. It would rather finance its petropiracy through deficit spending and monetization of the resulting debt, than by direct taxation, which would cause similar problems."
"The day will come, however, when maintaining a worldwide empire will force this or successor regimes to begin conscription again. This time, they will draft our daughters, as well. Likewise, circumstances will compel them to raise taxes massively, if not simply to finance the military occupation of the whole Moslem world, then in a Keynesian attempt to absorb the runaway inflation brought about by their idiot policies." |

"Any government that attempts to govern with contradictory laws will create a society of chaos. There cannot be a law that says you cannot rob a convenience store and another that says you can. There cannot be a law that prohibits murder and one that allows it. There cannot be a law that outlaws drunk driving and one that says it is legal. Any law that is adopted by government that lies in contradiction to the Constitution would by definition be null and void." |

First two letters on the page.
Letter 1 - It's great that the Star Tribune decided to profile seven proud Minnesota gun owners on the front page ("Stereotypes Dog Gun Owners," April 27). Now I'd like the Star Tribune to profile the majority of Minnesotans -- those of us terrified and ashamed to live in a state that has regressed so far as to have put all of its residents in danger rather than protecting them. Next time I feel too afraid to walk into the Mall of America or a Twins game, I'll make sure to thank the governor.
Gretchen Jennie Wolf, St. Paul.
------- Gee, Gretchen. If you're terrified, imagine how the criminals must feel!
Letter 2 - Your article intended to dispel myths and stereotypes about handgun owners served the opposite end. Not one of your interviewees provided a legitimate argument for urban handgun ownership (much less conceal-carry). The common thread among the conceal-carry proponents was fear. They share the misplaced belief that concealed handguns will make them and the rest of us safer. Do they not see the irony and shortsightedness of trying to curb violence by increasing gun prevalence?
Ben Seymour, Minneapolis.
------- Has Ben ever heard of the Second Amendment to the US Constitution? One must wonder. |

"The MPPA did change the law about who can own guns -- but only to restrict it. When the law takes effect about a month from now, convicted violent felons will be barred for their entire lives from owning firearms, instead of the 10 years that has been the case."
"Minnesotans, even without permits, who are allowed to own firearms will still be able to carry them in their homes or rented property, and their places of business (the MPPA expressly recognizes that employment agreements may limits guns in the workplace) or when traveling between their homes and their places of business. Minnesotans without carry permits who aren't traveling between home and work will still be able to have guns in their cars -- on the seat beside them if they care to -- as long as the guns are unloaded and in a closed, fastened case, just as they can now." |

4th from bottom.
FULL TEXT BELOW:
------- A tale, a petition
In the May 4 Star Tribune, John Lott Jr. sanctimoniously explained that other states with "shall issue" (conceal-carry) laws have not seen increases in crime by gun-permit users. He asked for examples to the contrary.
Recently in Brooklyn Park, it was reported that a 31-year-old man was arrested for threatening to shoot his wife and children. The man was apprehended with his gun, a bulletproof vest, lots of ammo and his permit to carry.
By the way, I and a few others in Brooklyn Park have been circulating a petition that simply states, "I do not support guns in public places."
Interestingly, this petition has been signed by teachers, church-goers, business owners, stay-at-home moms, day-care providers, police officers, lawyers, etc.
In fact, for every 50 people who have signed our petition, one has declined. That's a pretty impressive ratio, don't you think?
Carter Hendricks, Brooklyn Park.
------- Then, for every one non-signer there are 50 who do not understand that Constitutional rights are not subject to their cowardly whims. |
