RIVERDALE, Utah The police chief in Riverdale accidentally shot himself in an ankle while demonstrating how to dislodge a jammed handgun.
Chief Dave Hansen was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden for surgery.
The 54-year-old chief accidentally fired a gun during a training exercise inside a conference room at Riverdale police headquarters.
A fire captain and Riverdale Mayor Bruce Burrows confirmed the chief shot himself Saturday in an ankle bone. They said he was trying to fix a gun with a jammed round when the bullet fired.
Riverdale police officers carry .40-caliber pistols.

An unidentified man was killed with a bullet from his own gun early Sunday morning during a struggle with police in an elevator machine room atop a commercial Midtown Manhattan building, city police said.
The gun went off, shooting the man in the head, but it was unclear whether he intentionally shot himself or whether the gun -- inside a nylon sock -- went off accidentally in the struggle, the source said. |

A mans attempted armed robbery of a central Mesa. Ariz. store was foiled Sunday when the clerk fought back with a Taser, his fists and a handgun, police said.
The 30-year-old suspect, shot several times by a clerk at Mesa Mart, 1510 S. Country Club Drive, was listed in critical condition at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn, police spokeswoman Detective Chris Arvayo said.
Although the 55-year-old clerk had been assaulted with a pipe, he did not require extensive medical attention.
The clerk most likely will not face any criminal charges.
Hes got the right to defend himself, Arvayo said.

Comment by Chris W. Cox of the NRA in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on House Bill 89:
"HB 89 contains language that would allow ... the ability to defend themselves in restaurants."
"Even the finest restaurants cannot guarantee patrons sanctuary from criminal attack and life-threatening violence. In fact, some of the most horrific crimes in this country have occurred at restaurants. Furthermore, these restaurants welcome with open arms their celebrity and other VIP clientele with their armed security in tow. So, why does the GRA have a double standard with "regular people"? The Georgia Restaurant Association must think somehow "regular people" are less valuable. Well, the National Rifle Association disagrees." |

Jeane Kirkpatrick was frequently asked why the U.S. didnt simply withdraw from the U.N., and her answer was, Because its more trouble than its worth. The fact is that the U.N., at times, can be an effective instrument of American foreign policy. Of course, to say this is heretical to the real devotees of the U.N., for whom the U.N. shouldnt be an instrument of anyones foreign policy. But the fact is that everybody who participates in the U.N.all of the 192 member governments, all of the non-governmental organizations, and all of the civil servants in the U.N. secretariatstry to advance their own interests. The only entity that gets criticized for that, needless to say, is the U.S. government.

It was a major security breach for the state Department of Corrections, with potentially deadly consequences: A loaded .32-caliber semi-automatic handgun was found inside the walls of New Jersey State Prison on Aug. 4, 2006.
Nearly two years later, prison officials refuse to say whether they ever determined who smuggled the weapon inside or how the breach occurred.

If the attackers had had guns, they might have used them instead of knives or barbecue forks, although it would have attracted more media attention to their crimes. If their victims had had guns as a means of self-defense, the tragic outcomes might have been different.
Evil in one's heart cannot be legislated away by any governing body. Never do we hear about self-defense as a valid reason to own a gun. Having a gun is always associated with a negative outcome by the gun-control crowd. |

Ryan Marvin believes in the right to bear arms, a right he says is especially crucial for people who are more likely to be attacked. That's why Marvin, who is gay, recently resurrected the Granite State chapter of the Pink Pistols. The group will hold its first event May 25 at a shooting range in Deerfield.
The Pink Pistols aims to help gay men, lesbians and others learn to shoot guns for self-defense, practice shooting safely and get permits to carry concealed weapons. We caught up with Marvin, who's 24 and moved here from Texas less than a year ago as part of the libertarian Free State Project. |

The chairman of the Montana Republican Party recently suggested that Barack Obama’s “mindset on guns is pretty clear, arm the criminals.”
The opposite appears to be the case. Obama wants to prevent criminals from obtaining guns! I offer here an Obama quote, “...I think there is nothing wrong with a community saying we are going to take those illegal handguns off the streets. We can have reasonable, thoughtful gun control measures that respect the Second Amendment and people’s traditions.” |

Ed.: Both sides of the flyer are featured on this page.
These are all valid criticisms of Barack Obama; I have made some of these very criticisms myself (here, and here). But the source of these criticisms (Hillary Clinton) seems very strange to me. Barack Obama could very easily ask the same question: What does Hillary Clinton really believe?
Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t Hillary Clinton’s husband Bill Clinton sign the Brady Bill into law? Maybe this is another example of her disagreeing with the policies of her husband’s administration, such as with NAFTA (if you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you). |

Throughout history, there have always been men eager to abuse the power entrusted to them. The tyrant's pattern is always the same: demonize arms and their owners; agitate for regulation and ban and confiscate all arms. Once innocent citizens are disarmed, quash the defenseless population. Individuals like Ms. Jenkins seem to be genuinely concerned about public health and safety, but her arguments for common sense gun control play into the hands of those who seek to forcefully control people. |

The effort to preserve the illusion of a "living" outline can be exhausting, made more so by the ambiguities of language and punctuation. Rarely is the outcome of all the debate and study even close to finding a consensus. The Second Amendment protects the individual right to bear arms. Or is that a collective right simply aimed at forming militias for the defense of the nation? Even if the former were true, would any of these men have written that safeguard for individuals had they been able to see the future in firearms development and urban sprawl? Would any sane man?

Does it bother anyone that an NFL player allegedly owns a gun in which its main attraction to potential buyers is the fact its ammunition can penetrate body armor? Body armor most times worn by police?
Don't get your guntotin' panties in a bunch. It's just a question.
And please stop waving the Second Amendment in my face like it's a ticket to a Springsteen concert. Nobody's trying to take your gat away. |

“Each picture in ‘Armed America’ could be a pro-gun advertisement — or an anti-gun poster.”...
...The subject is James, a white-haired man, holding his white-haired lap dog. James bought his first gun after he was diagnosed with cancer of the vocal cords.
“This is everybody’s grandfather or elderly father,” Kennedy said. “He’s got two remotes, pictures of his grandkids, his prescription medicine, and then — on the arm of his recliner — three guns. I just think of the power of that image, and also what he said, that he was too old to fight, too sick to run and couldn’t yell for help. I got goose bumps when I saw it.” |

If the gun lobby has its way, you'll be able to be locked and loaded virtually anywhere in America, from parks to schools.
If gun control advocates have theirs, law-abiding citizens will continue to be helpless prey for murderers, rapists and thieves.
Now that Florida and Georgia have joined six other states with "bring your gun to work" laws, expect to hear these arguments more often as the two sides spar over just how far the Founding Fathers meant to go with the right to bear arms. |

The "gun" was a cardboard cutout that was to serve as a stand-in for a sword in a class project Schiffer's lawyer called "Hamlet in the Hood," the Journal reported.
......School officials suspended Schiffer and told him he couldn't graduate as punishment for causing the massive police reaction that disrupted classes and traumatized staff, students and their parents, the Journal said.
State District Judge Linda Vanzi, asked by Schiffer's father to allow his son to attend graduation, ruled on Friday that the senior could graduate and noted that there was plenty of blame to go around, according to the Journal.

For now, the Christmas Mountains probably will remain under the control of Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, until the issues of guns and hunting are resolved to his liking or lawmakers get involved.
One House member speculated Monday that legislators might consider legislation next year forcing Patterson to deal with the National Park Service.
...
"I happen to believe it is unconstitutional," Patterson said of the firearms ban.
Patterson is a fervent advocate of the Second Amendment right of people to keep and bear arms, and he routinely carries a concealed weapon. |
