"Europe's restrictive gun laws may make the American pro-gun lobby recoil like a blunderbuss, but European governments hardly care. They maintain that limiting gun ownership to hunters, collectors and gun-club members has helped keep firearm homicide rates much lower than those of the U.S."

"According to figures recently compiled by the British Home Office, the European Union's average homicide rate per 100,000 people in 1997-99 was 1.7, compared to 6.26 in the U.S. and 20.52 in Russia."

--The preposterous LA Times can't fathom any wisdom in bucking ridiculous gun ban laws (such as Chicago's). But at least the story is there, and even though this writer seems incredulous, the logic of John Birch makes it past the author's words.

Louis Wein shares our values. He has the courage to be politically incorrect in an age when most politicians, especially Republicans, only mouth the words but dont have the guts to stand up for what they know is right.

It would also ban the sale or transfer of all handguns that are not equipped with a so-called "integrated mechanical safety device" after January 1, 2003."

"Imagine a state in which you must register your name and address with the authorities, just so they can find you in case you break the law. In an age when bills vaunting protections for privacy abound, and when surveys of consumers rank privacy as a top concern, could that happen here? It is already happening. When we rely on the federal government to solve our problems, we invite it to intrude upon our privacy. We are asking Big Brother to come in and make himself at home."

The effort began Friday after it became apparent that a "shall-issue" concealed-handgun permit bill was about to become history. Until then, the gun lobby seemed relatively confident that its side would prevail."

Coalition leaders said gun shops are contributing to high crime rates in Chicago by selling handguns to Chicago residents even though handguns are prohibited in Chicago."

"John Riggio, manager of Chuck's Gun Shop, said it is not his job to regulate the behavior of people after they leave his store. Chicago residents are required to sign a form showing they have read and understood the Chicago ordinance prohibiting handguns."

"Over the course of the last few weeks, four incidents involving guns and minors have been investigated in three schools and one child-care setting. While it is rare that such incidents occur so closely together, and the combined total represents a fraction of a percent of gun owners, the events warrant a reminder to parents and all gun owners to exercise some vigilance." - Opinion of The Salt Lake Tribune

"What's behind the massacres in Germany, France and Switzerland?" BY JOHN R. LOTT JR.

"Sixteen people were killed during last week's school shooting in Germany. This follows the killing of 14 regional legislators in Zug, a Swiss canton, last September, and the massacre of eight city council members in a Paris suburb last month. The three worst public shootings in the Western world during the past year all occurred in Europe, whose gun laws are exactly what gun-control advocates want the U.S. to adopt. Indeed, all three occurred in gun-free "safe zones."

Gun control: 1, European voters: 0

Pim Fortuyn, whose party got 35% of the vote in recent elections, was killed today as he left an interview. A gunman got into the "secure" area where his limo was parked and shot him 6 times in the head and neck... then apparently escaped.

"In an interview last week, Fortuyn expressed fears that he could be the victim of an attack and said he had received threats... Fortuyn did use private bodyguards, though he could not afford constant security."
