"A gunman who went on a rampage with a homemade armored bulldozer, demolishing buildings in the small town of Granby, Colorado, has died, apparently after shooting himself, according to a local county official."
"Duane Dailey, chairman of the Grand County commissioners, said the coroner's report has not been issued to confirm the cause of death."
"No one was killed after the man exchanged gunfire and drove the massive vehicle into town buildings Friday, believed to be intentionally targeted as a result of a zoning dispute that affected his business." ... -------

"A man who spent months armoring a bulldozer before he went on a rampage through a small mountain town and then killed himself was surprised no one discovered his plans beforehand, according to notes found by investigators." ...
"'It's interesting how I never got caught,' Heemeyer wrote. 'This was a part-time project over a 1 1/2 year time period.'"
"Investigators believe Heemeyer spent months building a steel-and-concrete box around the driver's cage of the bulldozer. Police fired hundreds of bullets at the bulldozer during Friday's attack and tried three times to blast through it, but nothing penetrated the armor." ...
"Neighbors and acquaintances said Heemeyer was furious with town officials after fighting with them over zoning rules and town code violations at his muffler-repair business." |

"For the last several months, national discourse about a military draft has been increasing in both volume and tempo. In addition to legislative proposals by Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., and Sen. Fritz Hollings, D-S.C., other nationally prominent figures are speaking out on the topic, or evading questions about it."
"While Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., was attacking President Bush for being supportive of the draft, he was secretly stripping his own call for mandatory national service from his Internet site. While Defense Secretary Rumsfeld was denying any plan to reinstitute conscription, the Selective Service Board was actively recruiting members to fill the nation's draft boards. While Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., was introducing the topic at the Brookings Institute, Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb. actively called for the reinstatement of the draft." -------

"Signs reading 'no guns allowed' are coming down in some Ohio stores and restaurants."
"Ohioans for Concealed Carry said it is pleased to announce that two national chains -- Southwest Ohio Kroger stores and Perkins Family Restaurants -- have 'begun removing discriminatory signs banning concealed handgun license-holders from their stores.'"
"So far, at least nine national chains and nearly 50 other businesses have removed their signs and opened their doors to Ohio concealed handgun license-holders, the group said."
"In a letter announcing the removal of the signs, Marc Teaberry, the executive vice president of Perkins Family Restaurants, noted that the restaurant chain has 'numerous locations in Pennsylvania, which has always had a concealed weapon law, and have never had any problems.' Teaberry added that the company, in posting the signs, had received 'bad advice' from its attorneys." ... |

"The fallout is still stinging a week after Richmond police discharged a pepper-spray fogger in the midst of crowded upstairs apartment in the heart of the city."
"'I am concerned about our response to that circumstance,' Richmond Police Chief Andre Parker told us Wednesday during his weekly media briefing."
"Manufacturers of the large foggers, which are about the size of a kitchen fire extinguisher, say these "riot control" devices are best suited for outdoor use."
"The U.S. Department of Justice stresses 'the necessity of warnings prior to application' of any type of pepper spray."
"And yet, early last Sunday morning, a Richmond police supervisor activated his fogger - reportedly without warning - inside a second-floor apartment on the 200 block of East Main Street crowded with more than 100 partygoers. Their only avenue of escape: a 3-foot-wide stairway." |

"No charges will be filed against a storekeeper who fatally shot a man who entered the store and pointed what turned out to be a toy gun, the Hamilton County prosecutor said Thursday."
"The statement that storekeeper Abdrab Ashishi gave police was consistent with what investigators found at the scene and the coroner's autopsy report on the victim, Prosecutor Michael Allen said. Allen said the May 27 shooting of David Billups, 40, of suburban Forest Park, was in self-defense."

"The fatal shooting of an unarmed man last month in the woods north of Payson has aroused heated reactions."
"Some say the shooter, 57-year-old Harold Fish of Glendale, had no excuse for firing three bullets from his 10mm semiautomatic pistol into the chest of 43-year-old Grant Kuenzli."
"Others, including Fish's attorney, Mel McDonald, say he faced a frightening threat from Kuenzli and his three dogs. They call the shooting a clear case of self-defense."
"The truth, we suspect, rests somewhere between those polar views, and the decision by Coconino County Attorney Terry Hance to charge Fish with second-degree murder seems proper."
"Fair-minded people, however, may add up the evidence differently. Coconino sheriff's Detective Scott Feagan, for one, came to a sharply different conclusion. He said his department's investigation showed Fish acted in self-defense and called the death justifiable homicide." ... -------

"The manslaughter trial of former Liberty police officer Leo "Danny" Cook Jr. got under way for a second time Wednesday, this time in Adair County, where jurors will try to decide if Cook's use of deadly force was justified."
"Cook, 40, is charged in the July 2003 shooting death of Leon Brown after the officer responded to a domestic dispute at the home of Brown's mother. Brown, 52, was unarmed, but Cook contends he thought Brown was reaching for a knife or other weapon when he shot him in the chest from close range."
"Cook's first trial in Casey County Circuit Court in March ended without a verdict after Circuit Judge James Weddle declared a mistrial when the jury remained deadlocked after 14 hours of deliberations. Jurors said their last vote was 9-3 in favor of acquittal. Commonwealth's Attorney Brian Wright decided to retry the case and it was moved to neighboring Adair County, where the case has received little publicity. Weddle is also presiding over the second trial." ... |

"I used to support gun control, meaning civilian disarmament. There was no reason, the rationale went, for a private citizen to own a gun. The only ones who wanted guns had small genitalia, were paranoid crazies, and criminals."
"All this was assumed, without any empirical or statistical research to base it upon. Due to the influence of one of my clients who is a person of great honor, I began to research the issue of gun control on my own. Having been a college boy who loved library research, I knew how to ferret out fact from fiction. It was interesting to find that the claims of the NRA, John Lott, et al., were easy to verify from neutral or even slightly pro-gun control sources."
"More ominously, I found that the gun control groups consistently lied or twisted minor factoids taken out of context in their articles. This begged the question: if they are lying to advance their agenda, can we really trust the utopian outcome they promote as true?" ... |

"As they ready their city for the Super Bowl in January, lawmakers from Jacksonville and the sheriff are waiting for the governor to sign a bill they blitzed through the Legislature that requires mandatory jail time for habitual petty offenders, some of whom have haunted downtown for years."
"The proposal, which reached Gov. Jeb Bush's desk Wednesday and awaits his signature or veto, would require nearly anyone in the state convicted of five misdemeanors in a 12-month period to spend six months in jail or a residential treatment facility."
"Advocates for the homeless and South Florida judges say they fear that's a back-door way of locking up the downtrodden -- at great expense to state and county taxpayers, who would have to spend more for jail and treatment beds. And they say the timing of the bill is suspicious." -------
So if the cops wanted to roust someone (say an outspoken advocate of gun rights) all they need to do is harrass him until he tells them to piss off, then bust him for "failing to cooperate with a police investigation" or some such. Do that 5 times and they can throw him in jail. No potential for abuse there! |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our Founding Fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the second amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of the country. For that reason I believe the second amendment will always be important. --JOHN F. KENNEDY |
