In Australia, civilians are not allowed to possess automatic and semi-automatic firearms, self-loading and pump action shotguns, handguns with a caliber in excess of .38in with only narrow exemptions, semi-automatic handguns with a barrel length less than 120mm, and revolvers with a barrel length less than 100mm, the site advises. In Australia, private possession of fully automatic weapons is prohibited, with only narrow exceptions for permanently inoperable collector's, display, or museum guns. [P]rivate possession of semi-automatic assault weapons and their lookalikes is prohibited in all but exceptional circumstances. [P]rivate possession of handguns (pistols and revolvers) is only permitted subject to stringent condition. |

Everytown for Gun safety, an anti-gun group formed by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and prominent gun control advocate Shannon Watts, released new data on Tuesday suggesting that there have been an average of 1.37 school shootings every single week in the U.S. since the deadly 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. The anti-gun organization cites a total of 74 school shootings since Dec. 14, 2012. However, several of the shootings have come under scrutiny as some of them appear to have occurred off-campus and at least one may have been an instance of self-defense.
Journalist Charles C. Johnson dug deeper into Everytowns data on Tuesday and published his findings on Twitter.

A 28-year-old single mother, who has the same name as someone wanted by authorities, has been wrongly arrested twice by a northern Florida sheriff's office. In January, Ashley Nicole Chiasson spent 28 days in jail after being extradited to Clay County from her home state of Louisiana. She was released after officials realized they had the wrong person. During a status hearing last month related to the grand theft case that was being dropped, Chiasson was arrested again on another charge and spent another week in jail. The sheriff's office says Chiasson was released once the mistake was realized. The Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/1u4yWM7) reports Chiasson's attorney sent the sheriff's office a letter of intent to sue Monday. |

Prosecutors say a man acted in self-defense when he fatally shot a 19-year-old man during a Cinco de Mayo parade in Detroit.
The Wayne County prosecutor's office said Wednesday that the 23-year-old shooter "reasonably believed that another person was in danger of imminent death" or serious injury when he shot Andres DeJesus (de-he-SOOS') on May 4. |

Monday's shooting at an Oregon high school is the 74th school shooting in the 77 weeks since the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut back in December, meaning almost every week since then, there has been a school shooting.
President Obama spoke Tuesday at a question and answer session for the social media website, Tumblr about the recent shooting and the rise in gun violence. He said the nation needs to do "some soul searching" and "should be ashamed" of the deadly gun violence epidemic. |

Journalist and self-described skeptic Charles C. Johnson has taken issue with a recent report released by Everytown for Gun Safety that claims since the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, there have been at least 74 school shootings in America.
Johnsons main beef with the report is that the definition Everytown uses for school shooting is apparently overly broad and misleading in that it includes any incident where a firearm was discharged inside a school building or on school or campus grounds, as documented in publicly reported news accounts. |

It isn't often we come across a story these days in which guns are being used for the purpose of self-defense, but here's a time when I can't help but feel grateful that a couple owned firearms. A 17-year-old girl stepped outside her home in St. Louis at around 11 p.m. to retrieve something from her car, when two armed men reportedly put a gun to her head and used her a human shield so they could break into her house. The girl's mother and father were home at the time, as was a 5-year-old child. |

In 1996, after a ghastly massacre at Port Arthur, the Australian government passed firearms regulations that banned ownership of almost all semiautomatic weapons, all self-loading rifles and shotguns, and instituted strict restrictions on all sale of ammunition for the weapons. A person can own a gun if they can demonstrate to the state that he has a genuine reason for having one and self-defense is not considered a legitimate basis for ownership. Australia proceeded to run a buyback program that lasted nearly a year, in which time the government ended up paying citizens for 640,000 prohibited firearms. It was, in other words, a massive confiscation of guns. |

The obvious question becomes: Between these two recent rampages, five officers and one armed citizen were killed, so does this not debunk the "proof" that armed resistance is a legitimate means of staving off hell-bent maniacs? Or does the fact that sometimes armed resistance works, and more often it doesn't, suggest that survival during an incident such as this does not rely on the degree to which the citizenry is armed, but on other factors, such as quick feet and blind luck? |

KOMO, the ABC affiliate in Seattle, notes the ticklish situation confronting gun owners who might like to try some newly legal marijuana after Washington's state-licensed pot stores begin opening next month: If they do so, they lose their Second Amendment rights. Or so says the Gun Control Act of 1968, which makes it illegal for an "unlawful user" of "any controlled substance" to own a gun. KOMO describes the case of Bobbi Jo Floyd, a Richland resident who was denied a handgun carry permit a few months ago because she was known to be a medical marijuana user. Floyd's experience illustrates what happens when increasingly open cannabis consumption collides with a federal gun restriction that until now has rarely been enforced. |

A Missouri law on the books for more than 30 years allows cities to regulate the open carry and discharge of firearms within jurisdictions, he explained.
The legislature this year passed SB 656 that, if signed by Governor Nixon, would amend the laws pertaining to firearms in Missouri. SB 656 provides that no municipality shall create an ordinance that prohibits the open carrying of firearms for any person with a valid concealed carry endorsement who presents such endorsement or permit upon the demand of a law enforcement officer.
The bill would also eliminate any current municipal ordinance denying open carry to people with the proper permits. |

Gun rights groups are trying to block the state attorney general from enforcing a state regulation barring the commercial sale of certain semiautomatic pistols.
Bellevue, Wash.-based Second Amendment Foundation and Bostons Commonwealth Second Amendment Inc. say the regulation requiring a load indicator on a semiautomatic handgun is unconstitutionally vague and ambiguous.
It affects the sales of third- and fourth-generation Glocks to civilians, said Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, which filed a lawsuit yesterday in U.S. District Court in Boston. |

Oregon investigators are still trying to sort out the details of Tuesday mornings fatal school shooting at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, the second Pacific Northwest incident in less than a week, leaving one student and the gunman dead, and a second student in big trouble for having a gun that was not connected to the shooting.
Suddenly, yesterdays announcement by school officials in Toppenish, near Yakima that this coming fall, some school administrators will be armed does not seem like such a bad idea. Under this new policy, at least 11 administrators who take 16 hours or training, undergo a background check and have a concealed pistol license will be armed in various Toppenish schools. |

Wisconsin Carrys mission statement offers that we support an individuals right to carry in the manner of their choosing so long as they do so safely and legally. This principle is reflected in the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution which says the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. We are confident they were not just referring to handguns. While a handgun presents a more convenient firearm carry experience for most individuals, a rifle is a superior defensive tool in many situations. With the exception of its size, an openly carried rifle presents no different a circumstance than an openly carried pistol. |
