Germanys centuries-old bird-hunting tradition is often manifested in drillings and side-by-side shotguns with sling swivels, deep, heavy relief engraving and stock carvings one might expect to see on a cuckoo clock or glockenspiel. Suhl, Germany, is one of the worlds great gunmaking centers, and the standout firm in the modern era is Merkel Freres. The company endured two world wars, communist occupation and came out from under the fall of the Berlin Wall offering shotguns that were made and looked like guns produced before the Iron Curtain went up in the first place. Since 1989, its guns with more conventional lines and stocking have been brought into the United States. |

One thing about American jurisprudence has become abundantly clear over the years: nothing is ever settled. Never. Again and again our federal courts take on new, if minor, twists to old issues and decisions that eventually make their way to the U.S. Supreme Court, whose rulings only seem to ensure another cycle of legal wrangling. From the Supreme Court's current term, abortion, the death penalty, the Affordable Care Act and affirmative action are just some topics that fall into this category. |

Some political leaders in Oregon had strong reactions to Thursday's 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that determined carrying a concealed weapon in public is not a constitutional right. Liberal gun-control advocates at the Oregon Statehouse applauded the ruling as a step toward responsible gun ownership regulations, while conservative lawmakers and gun rights' groups blasted the decision as a "ludicrous" attack on the Second Amendment right they hope the Supreme Court will overturn. |

I havent been back on the cheeseburgers in recent days, although I have scouted out a country store in a remote location that reportedly serves up a good ham or bologna sandwich and plan to do some research there for an upcoming column. When I stopped to think about it, I think weve only had one meal out in recent weeks. We hit our nearest Tres Hermanos Nunez, the one in Cannonsburg, and enjoyed a quiet meal at a small table for two tucked into a corner. My wife ordered her usual, steak and chicken, but I decided to try something different than my usual, and still favorite the simply titled Chicken with Vegetables. |

A muslim murdered people in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Too many people told us this was going to happen. How many more murders will the anti-rights politicians bring on use before they let honest gun owners bear arms for self-defense?
I dont think we will ever change the minds of Socialists Politicians. The only way to limit the damage these anti-rights politicians can do is to vote them out of office. |

The California state Senate voted 28-8 Wednesday to exempt itself from the pointless gun-control laws that apply to the rest of the populace. Legislators apparently think they alone are worthy to pack heat on the streets for personal protection, and the masses ought to wait until the police arrive. |

On Thursday, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in the case of Peruta v. County of San Diego upheld Californias restrictive conceal-carry regulation of firearms. In doing so, the appellate court explicitly ruled that the Second Amendment does not even apply to concealed weapons that are carried in public. |

Thanks to a $25,000 donation, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office was able to buy back hundreds of guns from residents ready to unload. No questions asked, $50 for a gun--that's an offer the Wayne County Sheriff's Office has made before, but this buyback was different. The Mathis Community Center parking lot looked like an armory, but Judge Greg Mathis doesn't mind, because the guns are for future accessories, not an arsenal. |

Gun control is back in the news and the European Union voted to adopt stricter rules regarding the buying and selling of semi-automatic weapons (including the prohibition of weapons that could be converted to automatic mode), measures to stop deactivated guns from being put back in use and improved tracking of trafficked weapons, and overall tighter controls on sales of guns over the internet. While the measures set a minimum standard for member nations to respect, it does not stop any of them from putting their own tougher regulations into effect. However, European Union lawmakers must endorse the rules before their take effect. |

The details are different, but the story is the same: A killer with access to military-style weaponry mows down innocent Americans in cold blood. On Sunday it was apparently a self-radicalized Muslim who murdered 50 patrons of a gay nightclub in Orlando. In 2012, it was a mentally ill man with the same type of gun who killed 26 at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Next, who knows? |

Omar Mateen, who committed the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, bought his firearms legally. So, Mateen passed a background check for the weapons, which has become the foundation of the anti-gun left. In other words, the gun control crowd's own agenda wouldnt have prevented this horrific attackand there are many reasons why. |

The terror massacre at a packed Orlando nightclub reverberated across the presidential campaign trail Sunday, as the candidates condemned the deadliest shooting in U.S. history -- and Donald Trump ripped President Obama and Hillary Clinton for avoiding the term radical Islam in doing so. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee went so far as to say Obama should step down for not using the term and Clinton should get out of this race if she wont either. |

Across the street from San Franciscos main jail, business is booming at Auto Glass Now where more than a dozen motorists show up on an average day to replace windows broken by thieves. Its been insane, said Julio Lara, the shops manager who says nearby competitors are busy as well. Its nonstop. San Francisco is in the grips of an auto burglary epidemic. No other place in the country not New York, Chicago or Los Angeles had as many smash-and-grabs per capita as San Francisco did last year. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so. Indeed I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order. Adolf Hitler, April 11, 1942. (Source: "Hitler's Table-Talk at the Fuehrer's Headquarters 1941-1942", Dr. Henry Picker, ed. (Athenaeum Verlag, Bonn, 1951).) |
