"SANDY Paula Lazano didn't go before the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Council Monday to make excuses for what she's done.

Lazano was one of 10 officers to be disciplined by the board in the hearing. She was working for West Valley City and nearing retirement when she rolled her vehicle on Legacy Highway with a blood alcohol level of 0.12."

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is giving significant new powers to its roughly 14,000 agents, allowing them more leeway to search databases, go through household trash or use surveillance teams to scrutinize the lives of people who have attracted their attention.
The F.B.I. soon plans to issue a new edition of its manual, called the Domestic Investigations and Operations Guide, according to an official who has worked on the draft document and several others who have been briefed on its contents. The new rules add to several measures taken over the past decade to give agents more latitude as they search for signs of criminal or terrorist activity.

A white ex-transit cop who shot and killed an unarmed black man at an Oakland train station on New Year's Day in 2009 got an early release from prison Monday.
Johannes Mehserle served just 11 months of his two-year jail term, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
"He was released at 12:01 a.m.," a spokesman told CNN.
The 29-year-old scored an early release thanks to earning "good time" credit, with one point for every day spent in jail.
The slaying of 22-year-old Oscar Grant sparked outrage in Oakland, a northern California city.
His sentencing unleashed more violent protests when he was found guilty on a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter in 2010.

The New Powers the FBI Just Granted Itself

"The FBI has rewritten its own operations manual, giving its agents more autonomy than ever to conduct low-level searches without a paper trail. As The New York Times reported today, there's no court decision or change in privacy laws governing the bureau's search techniques. Rather, the 2011 update to the 2008 Domestic Investigations and Operations Guide changes the bureau's own guidelines. But some of the new powers trouble privacy activists even though they're perfectly legal."

Submitter's note: Everything Hitler did was also "perfectly legal." He made sure of it. 9.11 was the excuse to turn the FBI into a defacto national police force in open violation of the constitution. How do you hold FBI agents accountable?

The Second Amendment is unique to the Bill of Rights because it entitles the American public to something tangible; a firearm is a physical manifestation of self-defense.

This fact was affirmed in the 2008 landmark case, District of Columbia v. Heller, in which the Supreme Court ruled, for the first time in American juris prudence, that the Second Amendment does, in fact, guarantee individuals the right to possess firearms as a means of self-defense.

If this is the case, why am I threatened with expulsion and punishment under New York State law if I carry a handgun to defend myself should the need arise on my college campus?

Guns are no joke, and many times athletes abuse the privilege to carry firearms and use them for self-defense. Besides the adverse affect it has on society, athletes have lost millions of dollars from suspensions, not to mention the embarrassment that comes from not being able to play their respective sport.

Ed.: It isn't a privilege, it is a fundamental individual civil right.

Want to know what is the best value in a defensive handgun? Take a look at the Smith & Wesson SD40 pistol. It is a very reliable handgun that fits well in the hand and offers many of the features professionals look for. The real bonus is the street price on this gun is less than $400.

The SD40 is part of a two gun line, with the SD9 being its counterpart. The SD stands for self defense while the number indicates the caliber. The pistols are polymer framed and striker fired.

For instance, after reading about a drug raid in Missouri, an army officer currently serving in Afghanistan commented:

My first thought on reading this story is this: Most American police SWAT teams probably have fewer restrictions on conducting forced entry raids than do US forces in Afghanistan. For our troops over here to conduct any kind of forced entry, day or night, they have to meet one of two conditions: have a bad guy (or guys) inside actively shooting at them; or obtain permission from a 2-star general, who must be convinced by available intelligence (evidence) that the person or persons theyre after is present at the location, and that its too dangerous to try less coercive methods.

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms' "Guns Save Lives" rolling billboard will be in Las Vegas this week, and will provide the backdrop for a rally this Wednesday morning, June 15, at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of Discount Firearms and Ammo, 3084 S. Highland Drive, Suite B Las Vegas, NV.

CCRKBA Chairman Alan M. Gottlieb will be speaking at the event. He said the "Guns Save Lives" campaign is a counter to an effort launched earlier this year by anti-gun New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Bloomberg and MAIG hired a mobile billboard to promote gun control, and CCRKBA fought back. Gottlieb said Bloomberg's campaign "tells less than half of a story, so we're setting the record straight."

Regarding my post last week on the NRA and libertarians, I took issue with some comments that had been made by Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, in regards to a North Dakota case where an immigrant, Wayne Smith, had been engaged in a legal fight for his right to keep and bear arms.

Mr. Pratt e-mailed these comments to me on Friday to clarify the comments he gave to Fox News when they reported on Mr. Smiths legal challenge:

Let me explain it for you. In order for a free state to be secure from enemies both within and beyond the borders, there needs to be a well-regulated militia, which would not at all be possible if the right of the people to keep and bear arms did not exist. The militia originates from the people bearing arms.

The words "well regulated" refer to the militia, not the people. And most importantly, that right of the people -- you and me -- shall not be infringed. What part of "shall not be infringed" do you not understand?

Guns are no longer allowed in any building owned or operated by Greeley-Evans School District 6.

...

Member Brett Reese voted against the passage saying it was a violation of second amendment rights. Mark Hinze and Julia Richard were not present.

Taking my gun away because I might shoot someone is like taking my tongue out because I might yell fire in a crowded theater, Reese said. Its a simple fact, isnt that a simple fact when you think about it? Its like taking a pencil away because you might misspell a word.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said tightening gun laws to address the threat would be to surrender to terrorists at the expense of Americans' rights.

Weve seen time and again that terrorists will use anything, including our own rights and freedoms, to plot attacks against innocent Americans, Smith said in an email. But simply because terrorists abuse our liberties doesnt mean that we should limit the rights of law-abiding Americans. On the contrary, to limit our rights is to give in to terrorists and the fear they try to spread.

Now, I dont know Ja Rule and Im not in any position to pass judgment. But one thing I do know is that Mr. Rule has never tried to take away any of my constitutionally protected individual liberties.

The same cannot be said of New York Citys lunatic mayor. It was Mike Bloomberg, after all, who lobbied the state legislature to pass the law making it a Class 3 felony, the same as robbery or burglary, to carry a loaded, unregistered handgun in the Empire State.

Bloombergs favorite cause, in fact, is taking away gun rights from law-abiding Americans. He calls the group he founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns, but the name is a sham.

State and city leaders are backing proposed legislation that they say closes a loophole in Ohio law that lets people purchase weapons at gun shows without undergoing background and criminal checks.

The bill was introduced on Monday by State Rep. Tracy Maxwell Heard, a Columbus Democrat, and comes ahead of a gun show this weekend at Westland Mall, 10TV's Kevin Landers reported.
Coleman was critical of the event, saying it has become a magnet for illegal gun sales.

Legislation allowing concealed carry permit holders to take their guns into bars and restaurants serving alcohol appears headed for a final vote in the legislature, perhaps on Wednesday, Mike Dittoe, spokesman for House Speaker William Batchelder, R-Medina, said Monday.

Gov. John Kasich appears likely to sign the bill into law.

The governor is a gun owner and a strong Second Amendment supporter and while we always review legislation before making a final decision, he supports this concept, Rob Nichols, Kasichs spokesman, said in an email.

State and federal lawmakers from Florida have made clear in recent weeks just how eager they are to please the politically powerful gun lobby. It's as cringe-producing as a tweet from Anthony Weiner.

During this year's legislative session, state lawmakers passed a bill, which Gov. Rick Scott signed into law, that restricts how doctors and other health-care providers talk to their patients about guns. Physicians, especially pediatricians, have traditionally asked about firearms and other potential dangers to children in their patients' homes.

So, what do my readers think? I'll go as far as give my own take. The Weekend Show guy did mention the constitution. I could be true that, if one reads into it, the right to bear arms also mentions the right not to disclose this information to others. And I do believe this was done for political reasons. If doctors simply wanted to ensure kid safety, they would design a brochure and hand out to parents, explaining that this is a very hot topic nowadays and they should be aware of statistics and information if they do choose to keep a gun in the house. That way, I wouldn't feel ambushed if I had a child and was asked such a question.
