...He said he didn't know she had moved into the home with her new romantic interest, Winooski Police Officer Jason Nokes. But he found out when he said Nokes-- who was off-duty-- angrily confronted him, and Chamberlin claimed he was forced to defend himself with a knife.
"Mr. Nokes came out yelling. There was an altercation at my car. He got me through my window. I swung the knife once, he was injured and he released me. I drove off and I called 911," said Chamberlin. ...
Donovan said eyewitness accounts contradicted officer Nokes' claim that the knife attack was unprovoked. So Donovan was compelled to offer Chamberlin a plea deal calling for no prison and no criminal record if Chamberlain stays clean for two years. |

The Supreme Court's upcoming decision in a Washington, D.C. handgun ban case could potentially nullify thousands of gun laws on the books. The case stems from a security guard who was denied a request to keep a firearm in his District residence for self-protection.
Washington D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty recently said that the District's handgun ban "has saved many lives since 1976 and will continue to do so if allowed to remain in force." How does he measure that? The truth is that murder by handguns has gone up substantially in the District since the handgun ban was passed. I wonder how many honest people in the District were killed by thugs with guns because they were deprived of the ability to adequately defend themselves. |

A homeowner who shot and killed two suspected burglars could soon learn whether he will face charges in the case. Grand jurors are hearing the case against Joe Horn, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.
Pasadena police said Horn killed burglary suspects Hernando Torres, 38, and Diego Ortiz, 30, by shooting them in the back at about 2 p.m. on Nov. 14 as they ran from Horn's neighbor's house in the 7400 block of Timberline Drive.
Horn maintained he feared for his life and acted in self-defense. |

One of these days I expect the Toledo Blade to change its name to something softer, like maybe the Toledo Spoon or Toledo Safety Scissors. Referencing the blade of a knife or sword is just too aggressive sounding for such a liberal, feel-good paper who apparently all believe if we'd just ban all weapons that crime would magically stop and we'd live in a rosy tinted Mr. Roger's neighborhood for the rest of time. ... Seems most anything can be used as a weapon. Could be they mean a blade of grass. I suppose they fancy it means they're on the "cutting edge", but even that seems too violent a reference for them. But, I digress. |

The Supreme Court handed down only two decisions this morning, and once again, none of the blockbuster cases still outstanding for the term was among them. The Court announced it will return to the bench on Thursday, so that's the next opportunity for the justices to release either D.C. v. Heller (Second Amendment gun rights) or Exxon Shipping Co. v. Baker (Exxon Valdez punitive damages) or Kennedy v. Louisiana (death penalty for non-homicide rape.) Fifteen decisions are yet to come before the term ends later this month. |

The dispute over gun rights poses several important questions. Although the Second Amendment was ratified in 1791, the court has never definitively said what it means to have a right to keep and bear arms. The justices also could indicate whether, even with a strong statement in support of gun rights, Washington's handgun ban and other gun control laws can be upheld.
The outcome could finally settle the question of whether the 27-word amendment, with its odd structure and antiquated punctuation, provides an individual right to gun ownership or simply pertains to militia service. |

Georgia is a state where many employees in both rural and urban areas own guns; many are licensed to carry those guns; and many commute long distances and leave their guns in locked compartments of their vehicles parked on company property during work hours. Knowing this, many employers worry about their liability risks for possible workplace violence and prohibit bringing guns onto company property, even the parking lots.
On May 14, 2008, Governor Sonny Perdue signed a new Georgia law that restricts the ability of employers to adopt policies that prohibit employees and visitors from storing firearms in their vehicle while parked in an employer's parking lot. |

A new initiative to get guns off the street is in full swing. Starting this week, anyone who turns in a gun will receive a $150 gift card to Crossgates Mall.
Pastor Charlie Muller of the Victory Christian Church, who heads the program, says it's a great incentive for people to help save their community.
"Where it works or out or not, we're gonna know in like three weeks. But we are not gonna make a difference, we're not going to see a difference unless we do something. We can sit here and let kids die or we can get up and do something and make a difference," Muller said |

Police on Monday identified an officer involved in the fatal shooting of a 48-year-old man, who allegedly displayed a weapon that was later found to be a toy gun, El Paso Police Department officials said.
Gregory Smith died from gunshot wounds he suffered after Officer Matthew Jones fired several rounds in what police described as self-defense, said Officer Chris Mears, an El Paso Police Department spokesman.
Jones, an 11-year veteran with El Paso Police Department, stopped Smith in the parking lot of the Coronado Motel, 4645 N. Mesa, at about 8:50 a.m. Friday, Mears said. Jones believed Smith matched the description of an alleged fugitive with outstanding warrants, he said. |

The DuPont company says it has developed a new way of using its Kevlar fiber to design body armor that weighs less and provides better bullet-stopping power. The company said Monday its new Kevlar XP can stop bullets within the first three layers of an 11-layer body armor vest, with the remaining layers absorbing the energy of the bullet. Company officials say that results in less trauma to the wearer. |

Several area legislators say they were surprised to learn that a bill they voted for in 2007 loosened the restrictions on concealed-carry holders bringing loaded weapons into bars. I dont have a specific recollection of that being discussed at all, said Rep. Paul Davis, a Lawrence Democrat. Unfortunately, with the gun bills there seems to be specific little things that get stuck in there, and then they dont get mentioned when they are on the floor. Davis and other legislators said they believed the regulations needed to be reviewed during next years legislative session. |

Your last article brought up an interesting question. I have a concealed carry permit, and have always carried my weapon on school campuses, etc. I will typically leave my weapon in the vehicle when I am on the school campuses for any extended period of time. My kids are well trained in firearms and know that I carry a concealed weapon. One of them, I suspect, said something to a teacher. The principal of the school sent me an e-mail telling me it was against the rules to carry the weapon on campus. I presumed she was wrong and totally forgot to look it up. The question I have is, "Does Jackson County have an ordinance that prohibits a CHL from carrying his or her weapon on the school campus?" |

06-15) 16:56 PDT -- A man parked his truck on a country road outside Turlock on Saturday night, removed a baby boy from a car seat and then beat the child to death in the street, fighting off passers-by who tried to stop him, until he was gunned down by a police officer whose helicopter landed in a nearby pasture, police said Sunday.
The 27-year-old suspect, who lived in Turlock (Stanislaus County), died almost immediately where he fell. The child, who according to police appeared to be 12 to 24 months old, was taken to a hospital but died before arrival.

TURLOCK, Calif. Police killed a 27-year-old man as he kicked, punched and stomped a toddler to death despite other people's attempts to stop him on a dark, country road, authorities said.
Investigators on Sunday were trying to establish the relationship between the suspect and the child they say he killed Saturday night. The Stanislaus County coroner said the boy appeared to be between 1 and 2 years old based on his size, according to county sheriff's deputy Royjindar Singh.
Submitters Note: People stopped to help but had no guns, shame. They had to fly in a cop, how pathetic. At least they could have hit him with a tire tool or something, geesh. There is no excuse for this. |

Most Americans believe that owning a gun is the right of every citizen. According to a Gallup poll, 73 percent of the U.S. public believe that the Second Amendment guarantees individuals the right to gun ownership. Therefore the Heller decision, which is expected any day now, could play a pivotal role in the 2008 presidential campaign. Former Ohio Secretary of State-turned-pundit Kenneth Blackwell calls it "the Roe v. Wade" of gun rights and suggests that the case (and its results) will ripple beyond District borders to impact "90 million American gun owners." |
