Tevin Biles-Thomas, the brother of the Olympic gymnastics champion Simone Biles, was acquitted of murder charges this week, less than a month after a Cleveland judge declared a mistrial in his case.

Mr. Biles-Thomas, 26, was charged in the fatal shooting of three people at a New Years Eve party in Cleveland in 2018. On Tuesday, Judge Joan Synenberg of Common Pleas Court in Cuyahoga County acquitted him, court records show, granting a motion filed by Mr. Biles-Thomass defense lawyers arguing that prosecutors had failed to provide enough evidence to justify a guilty verdict.

I came to the conclusion that there was insufficient evidence to sustain a conviction, Judge Synenberg said in an interview on Wednesday.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed two bills into law this week that will allow Lone Star State residents to carry handguns without a permit and loosen regulations surrounding suppressors.

The Republican signed permitless carry legislation on Wednesday after it cleared the state Senate in early May by a 18-13 vote and the state House via a 84-56 vote. The law, which implements what is commonly referred to as "constitutional carry," allows Texans over the age of 21 to carry their firearms if they're not precluded from owning weapons due to prior criminal history.

Virtually nothing has been open in New York for over a year, including the work of politicians in Albany. For months, lawmakers have huddled in obscurity, working on legislation at a Statehouse which remained shuddered to the public for the duration. Fortunately, late last week, the New York Legislature wrapped up its regular 2021 session, and it's that annual time of year when law-abiding gun owners can release a cautious sigh of relief and assess the damage. This session, the shadow cast by COVID afforded them some useful cover while trampling on the rights of law-abiding New Yorkers.

What is a militia? What do they do? What is their purpose?

So, lets dive into the history of militias and look at the past, and at the end of this series take a look at the militia today.

Unfortunately, the term militia has been receiving a negative connotation in the press lately, which is largely due to far-left activists banding together and falsely calling themselves a militia while they take over cities in various states, declaring their own sovereign communities or destroying Middle Eastern countries. This is the antithesis of what a true militia is all about and what they stand for. These are just unlawful groups blemishing the militia name.

A proposed ban on gun stores and other firearms businesses in Newton has divided local gun control advocates and raised concerns that the measure may draw the city into a court fight over the constitutional right to bear arms.

A public hearing is scheduled Monday on the proposed ban being considered by the Newton City Council.

Earlier this month, the Council approved zoning rules that leaders said would strictly regulate gun stores and other firearms businesses in Newton. The zoning was developed after a local businessman sought to open a gun store in Newtonville, and the new rules do not permit firearms businesses in that location.

A 25-year-old man arrested in connection with a fatal shooting last year at a South Lubbock fast food restaurant has been cleared of criminal charges after video evidence presented to a grand jury apparently showed his use of deadly force was justified.

A Lubbock County grand jury on Tuesday returned a no bill, declining to indict Rene Quintanilla in connection with the April shooting death of 21-year-old Robert A. Rodriguez at the Wendy's restaurant in the 2500 block of South Loop 289.

When a federal judge in California struck down the states 32-year-old ban on assault weapons in early June 2021, he added a volatile new issue to the gun-rights debate.

The ruling, by U.S. District Court Judge Roger Benitez, does not take effect immediately, because California has 30 days to appeal the rejection of its assault weapons ban. Most coverage has focused on Benitezs provocative analogy between an AR-15 and a Swiss army knife. But the case raises troubling questions about the meaning and proper role of militias under the Second Amendment.

Tomorrow, the House could hear Senate Bill 6, to ban most ammunition magazines in common use. Yesterday, the Senate voted 13-8 to pass House Bill 125, to essentially end the centuries-old practice of home-built firearms for personal use and to restrict free speech on firearms design. It now goes to Governor John Carney for his consideration.

Public comments were at times emotionally charged. When one township resident continued to address the audience after his allotted three-minute time limit, Supervisors Chairman Martin Pinter warned that he would shut the meeting down.

A coalition of 22 states on Wednesday announced it has filed a court brief in support of a decision that struck down Californias ban on "assault weapons" which the liberal state has now appealed to the Ninth Circuit Court.

The coalition, led by Arizona, is urging the Ninth Circuit to uphold a lower court decision to strike down the three-decade ban on the states definition of illegal military-style rifles. A federal judge overturned the ban with a permanent injunction earlier this month but has given the state 30 days to appeal -- which it is doing.

Most federal nominees receive rote consideration in the Senate. If the president is of the same party as the Senate majority, nominees are generally easily confirmed.

Only a few nominees ever run into any procedural hurdles. The exception to this rule is, and should be, David Chipman, the current nominee for director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). To understand why, lets do a quick recap of some pertinent data points.

Piscataquis County has become the first Maine county to declare itself a Second Amendment sanctuary, a win for gun rights advocates who have already pushed cities and towns across the state to do the same.

The resolution in Maines least populous county, passed unanimously on Tuesday, states that county commissioners will refuse to enforce or financially support any new gun laws that infringe on the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution or Article I, Section 16 of the Maine Constitution, which states that the right to bear arms shall never be questioned.

Beretta came relatively late to the polymer striker-fired service pistol market, but their Apex in this format has drawn raves from most reviewers. Beretta included a chopped and channeled version still with a double-stack magazine they call the APX Compact. But the concealed carry/off duty gun market has an insatiable desire for smaller, slimmer 9mm pistols, and to satisfy this large niche now comes the Beretta APX Carry. It uses what might be called a semi-single stack magazine, la GLOCKs recently introduced G48 and G43X.

The governor of the U.S. state of Texas has signed a new law that will allow people to carry handguns without possessing a permit or passing a background check.

Gov. Greg Abbott was due to highlight the legislation as part of a ceremony Thursday.

The measure, which goes into effect Sept. 1, applies to anyone who does not have any felony convictions or other legal barriers to owning a gun. Federal background checks for some gun purchases remain in place, and individual businesses can decide to not allow guns on their premises.

A Wisconsin man who shot and killed his brother-in-law when caught searching the victims computer for evidence of child pornography is entitled to have jurors consider his claim of self-defense, the Wisconsin Supreme Court held Wednesday.

Alan M. Johnson was convicted by a Walworth County jury of first-degree reckless homicide for the shooting death of his sisters husband, identified as K.M. in court documents. Johnson had broken into K.M.s home to search his computer for child pornography.
