"We are out outgunned. We're outmanned. We're out-staffed. We do need responsible gun legislation," Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams, who is president of the Major Cities Chiefs Association, a group that represents police chiefs in large cities around the country, told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. "We do believe that there should be a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in order for us to properly serve and protect our community."

With news that Congress is on its way to passing new gun control laws that will make it easier for bureaucrats to disarm law-abiding Americans, the United States is once again repeating the egregious mistake of responding to a perceived emergency by crippling constitutional protections for Americans unalienable rights.

Thats why our Cato colleague Tom Palmer, who is gay, was one of the original plaintiffs in what became District of Columbia v. Heller, the landmark Supreme Court ruling affirming an individual right under the Second Amendment. He was later dropped from the case on procedural grounds, but his interest in the topic wasnt just academic. As litigator Alan Gura explained, he had once fended off a hate crime using a firearm that he happened to have on him. He is alive today, or at least avoided serious injury, because he was able to have access to a gun when he needed it.

But within six hours, she heard someone trying to get in through her bedroom window. As she saw hands lifting the window, she shot through the window stating it was a warning shot. But the shot hit the would-be intruder as police found him lying on the ground a few feet from the window.

Now here we are seven months later and the prosecutor ruled that she acted in self-defense. Thats a long time wonder whether you are going to be charged or not. Luckily, for her, she wasnt. Never fire warning shots. Period. We will say it every time. You must identify the threat and shoot to stop the threat.

I grew up target shooting and hunting with my father, who loved guns. I still have the deer rifle he gave me when I turned 11. He had a variety of guns we found over 50 in his house after he died though he never felt the need for an assault rifle nor any other semi-automatic weapon capable of mass murder. That wasnt his thing, nor is it mine, though Ive owned other guns over the years, still enjoy shooting and have taught my kids to shoot.

The right to self-defense is protected not by the Second Amendment, which was intended for those participating in well-regulated militias but by the Ninth Amendment (where, incidentally, our right to privacy is also found). But no one needs an assault rifle for self-defense.

Despite their self-righteous defense of individual liberty, opponents of gun control do not have a lot of law on their side. To buttress their position, they generally point to Antonin Scalias opinion in D.C. v. Heller as controlling the meaning of the Second Amendment. In that case, Scalia and four conservative colleagues overturned two centuries of precedent to take the position that the opening of the amendment, A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, is essentially meaningless fluff, and that the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed, were the only words in the amendment that actually matter.

One of the nations most prominent gun rights advocates will hang up her holsters at least in the public realm. Marion Hammer, a former National Rifle Association President, announced her retirement as Floridas top lobbyist for the NRA Institute for Legislative Action in the state.

It has been an honor to serve NRA members as state lobbyist in Florida, Hammer said. Above all, its been my privilege to serve and to fight alongside great warriors for our cause like Wayne (LaPierre), without whom many of our nations self-defense laws would not have been possible.

An Arlington jury has found a store employee not guilty in the shooting of a burglar, in a case that received national media attention.

It all started with a burglary of the Arlington Smoke Shop, at 2428 Shirlington Road in the Green Valley neighborhood, shortly before 5 a.m. on March 29, 2020. Three masked suspects allegedly broke into the store and started stealing cash and merchandise.

Shop employee Hamzeh Abushariah was sleeping in a back room of the store at the time due to Covid concerns at his D.C. apartment building. Prosecutors alleged that Abushariah grabbed a gun and shot one of the suspects, who was under the age of 18, point blank in the back.

The tense and frightening situation turned tragic when the homeowner fatally shot the intruder.

A month on, prosecutors have ruled the shooting a justifiable case of self-defense and are declining to issue charges against the shooter.

Indiana is the 17th most populated state, but when it comes to gun licenses, its ranked 12th.

In 2021, according to CBS News, 157,546 Hoosiers had licenses. If they were to form their own cityGunsburg, perhapsit would be the third biggest city in the state, beating out Evansville.

Indianas history leading up to now has been pro-gun, generally speaking.

But just as Indiana has not always been a solidly red stateit was a swing state over 100 years ago and voted for Barack Obama in 2008it has not always had Republican-style legislation on guns.

The Supreme Court has not ruled on the merits of a major Second Amendment case since 2010. But that will likely change this month. At issue here is the constitutionality of a state law requiring anyone seeking a license to carry a concealed handgun in public to first satisfy a local official that he has "proper cause" to do so. According to the state, a "generalized" wish to carry a concealed weapon for self-defense purposes is not sufficient to meet the proper cause standard. Judging by the November 2021 oral arguments, a majority of the Court appears poised to recognize at least some sort of limited Second Amendment right to carry a concealed gun for self-defense purposes outside of the home.

While micro compact pistols are often derided as ineffective or inadequate for self-defense, its also the case that the best gun for self-defense is the one you have with you. Thats almost the entire point of a pocket pistol. Theyre so small and light that you can literally drop one into your pocket, with a decent holster of course, and have it with you at all times. But the same features that make it easy to carry also present some problems.

Supplies would undoubtedly plummet and prices would undoubtedly skyrocket, putting the availability of ammunition for self-defense, training, and competition out of reach to many Americans.

News of the move was broken by Larry Keane, the general counsel and senior vice president at the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the leading trade association for Americas firearms and ammunition industries. Keane on Wednesday night published a tweet, which stated: The U.S. Military is actively considering shutting down the sale [of] M855/SS109 ammo from Lake City to the commercial market.

The cartridges mentioned in Keanes post are very popular forms of 5.56 caliber ammunition, the most common caliber for the AR-15.

She couldnt even bring herself to read the first wave of news stories coming out of Uvalde. It was just too gut-wrenching, she said. But she quickly realized that there was one change she and her husband could make in their own home a small sacrifice that could potentially prevent a future tragedy. She called her husband and said she wanted to get rid of their AR-15.

Theres no need for us to have an AR-15 in our house, she said. Were responsible gun owners, but you never know. I mean, we have kids who have friends over and, you know, nobody ever thinks that their child will grow up to be somebody that does something heinous. But why even have the opportunity for our kids or their friends or anybody to have access to an AR-15?

We are surrounded by death. More than 100 people die each day by guns, according to government health statistics. Think of this; let it sink in. Imagine a newspaper or TV news show covering these deaths. It would be the only news. There would be room for nothing else. Why dont they cover it?

What could be more relevant, important and critical to our personal safety. Yet this deluge of death is largely hidden from our view. Who benefits from this? Are the children too young to hear about all of the young people being killed by assault rifles?

A ban on sales of AR-15 rifles and other assault style weapons in Delaware will soon become law.

The measure aimed at preventing massacres like the one last month that killed 19 elementary school students and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, completed its passage through both chambers of the General Assembly on Thursday when the Senate approved it 13-8.

All Republicans voted no. The only Democrat who voted no was Bruce Ennis of Smyrna.

After the first March for Our Lives following the Parkland high school massacre in 2018, retired Justice John Paul Stevens called minimal measures like universal background checks useful to reduce mass killings of schoolchildren and others but no cure, and encouraged students to seek more effective and more lasting reform and demand a repeal of the Second Amendment as interpreted in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008).

Gun safety advocates launched a campaign Thursday to rally Iowans to defeat a constitutional amendment appearing on the states November ballot that would make it more difficult to restrict the purchase and ownership of firearms.

Advocates formed a coalition, Iowans for Responsible Gun Laws, to push back against the Keep and Bear Arms Amendment.

The proposed language of the constitutional amendment reads: The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The sovereign state of Iowa affirms and recognizes this right to be a fundamental individual right. Any and all restrictions of this right shall be subject to strict scrutiny.

A pet shop in California has banned supporters of the 2nd amendment from adopting animals at its location.

We do not support those who believe that the 2nd amendment gives them the right to buy assault weapons, Shelter Hope Pet Shop said on its website. If your beliefs are not in line with ours, we will not adopt a pet to you.

The shop says it will conduct a one-hour interview with prospective adopters to find out if they support guns. The policy says it will find out if potential pet parents care about children being gunned down in our schools?
